Title: How to improve throwing (or throwing arm)
Post by: kal_m on April 15, 2014, 02:30:14 AM
Hello guys,
I am in my mid 30's and don't have the arm I once had and it doesn't surprise me. But the past 3-4 years have been pretty bat my shoulder and arm hurts when I throw.I am not able to throw flat and from the boundary. We hardly practice throwing and play only on the weekends.
My questions is how can I improve my arm? Can you please suggest me some routines that I can help me improve. I never had a shoulder injury.

TIA!!

I wouldn't bother buddy, just field in the ring and train that under arm shy at the stumps and leave the big throws to the young lads who don't care about injuries yet.

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago - strained my rotator cuff muscle and had to do lots and lots of physio to get it right. It still needs constant work to maintain it but I can still throw. I figured out that it was my technique that was lacking, throwing's not really something you get taught! it's all about body position and getting your hips into the action - this is a great video to get you on your way.

Best get the shoulder looked at though, the longer you leave it the worse it's going to get...

The average age of our team is around 34 so not many youngsters. Also I am mostly in the outfield as I have very safe hands.

Me too, think I've only dropped 2 in 4 years but I'm still not buggering up my shoulder for the sake of a longer throw.

weird, works for me. I'm using Chrome if that makes any difference...

I googled "Paul Collingwood Throwing skills BBC" so maybe that would work.

If you aren't in the UK,  then BBC videos don't work.

I'm also in my 30s and had a poor arm. It was all in the throwing technique.

I spent the offseason last year with a baseball coach. It was somewhat embarrassing being in your 30s and having to ask to be taught how to throw properly....regardless, I've now got one of the stronger arms in the team. Baseball guys will tell you that age or strength matter little in the ability to throw long and hard (injuries permitting). It's all about the correct technique.

Strengthening using resistant bands is what most guys use.
It's worth going on YouTube and checking out some baseball videos. A lot of them and you might pick up some tips

But one would imagine that online content (other than paid subscriptions) should be available to everyone.Would have been nice to watch it.

Not true, I am in Canada and able to watch these videos.

On topic, if BBC videos are not working get the baseball videos. Or search for cricket masterclass on youtube

Don't know if I am breaking any unknown forum rule here but try the following steps to access the videos.

Install chrome and add the Zenmate plugin, once installed click on the shield icon to go to add on settings.
In the settings change the public location to UK.

Now go browse the BBC UK site.

If you want to throw flat and not hurt your arm and shoulder - ensure that the power comes from the wrist all the way up (and not the other way around!!). Pain occurs since you are using more of the upper arm (read biceps). Wrist -> forearm -> biceps AND throw. Ofcourse, this requires practice.

Additionally, once you have practiced this (starting with 20 yard throws and then going further back once comfortable) start using your body into the throw. Throwing arm back and using the whole body during the throw by rotating.Basically swinging your body along with the throw.

Hope this helps.

Just saw something called Duraband for cricket on the forum twitter feed and a demo video on you tube with Ian Pont.

Worth looking into as it may help improve the muscle strength and throwing mechanism.

Yes mate. Good call. In baseball, outfielders will start at about 10 metres and work back to 30-40+ metres in reps.
Look to use you legs in the throw too...pushing off the back leg. It takes practice. Twice a week for 6 months for me.
