I found a bat I liked at the end of the season (2nd hand but unused), knocked it in and then played it in over the winter and slowly fell in love, she wasn't much of a looker but we were made to be together.

Comes the first few outdoor nets of the season everything was going well until I felt a small explosion at the end of my hands and looked in horror down to see this...

Rest in pieces fair prince!
The exact same thing also happened last year, with a bat from the same manufacturer - albeit through a different supplier - fortunately being a CB forumer I have a brand new Salix as a backup plan, but it's horrible to have that happen once with a bat you really get on with, but twice in a row is maddenening! And with both having been purchased second hand I can't really expect the brand to take any responsability, so even though I don't think it's my fault I've no comeback.
Somebody please reassure me that such breakages are just freak results and the explofing splices aren't caused by anything I might be doing!
P.S I'll see If I can find a picture of last years which was even more spectacular.

I had a BB that split in the same manner last season. Not quite as spectacularly, but same break.
-
I had a newish Salix do that, and a Millichamp and Hall
Also had a couple of older bats do it
Suppose it's a combination of drying out timber, hard dodgy balls?, and at the end of the day it's a natural product.
Gutted when it's a decent bat tho
-
Did you laugh when you saw it?
When my H4L exploded I couldn't stop sniggering. It was very funny looking at the distraught face of the bowler and my eldest (who used it when it blew-up).

I presumed it was caused by a slight missfitting of the splice causing a bit too much stress in one area, I guess the other things you mentioned could play a part though (not dodgy balls though for such a breakage I'd say, unless their very heavy, plus we only net with our league balls which are decent).

I was somewhere between tears and giggling, especially as the ball that did it was from a lad that bowls gernades and all I did was push it towards mid off.

Looks more like storm damage to me.
-
What oil have you used? As it's gone from pale white to David Dickinson.
-
IMO a contributory factor is that the blade has probably been allowed to dry out.
-
I guess, as well,,,this is what bat makers are up against when making bats
How soft to press, how much drying out of the cleft and to some extent the bat profile must contribute to possible breakages?

2 coats of Salix bat oil, it's still fairly pale but a combination of an iPhone camera and a photo taken in a basement haven't helped.

I did wonder about that as it can be a big problem over here with people heating their houses a lot more than in the UK, but I think I've stored them both pretty well over the winter.

Could be a splicing issue or possibly storm damage. I'm sure when carbs had his issue in the ashes james laver said it was a case of storm damage. Difficult to spot during manufacturing and only raises it's head when it does this.

Well my one ramaining bat was bought directly from Salix so if it does happen again this time next year I'll be hoping they can replace it.

That is so sad, BB do some really nice bats and I especially like that profile.
