Title: Using a bat without applying oil or wax?

If I buy a cheap bat and if I don't mind about the longevity, then is it ok to use it without applying oil/wax? In other words does applying oil got anything to do with the performance?

I always find my bats get harder after I apply oil/wax and I need to tap them up a lot or use in nets to get them match ready. Not sure if it is just something in my head or some science behind it.
