Title: How do you measure spine height?
Post by: Chad on May 10, 2014, 03:03:16 PM
Hi guys, just me being bored from studying, so figured I would ask this question. How do you all measure spine height? Do you just use a ruler and judge by eye? Do you have a set of calipers? Or do you just take another person's word for it? (Fair enough if you're using B3, and they make it to the exact measurement) I've tried the ruler method, and I feel that although it can be accurate, you can misread it just by moving your head slightly!

Put the bat on its spine on a table, get a level, level it and measure from the table to the top edge. Ifs a flat face happy days, rounded face then add a little extra

This is how I am measuring..
Put the bat on it's edge on a flat surface. Put a book with a cover binding or something with hard and flat surface in parallel to the bat touching the highest point of spine. Now use the ruler to measure the distance between the flat surface of the book till the bat inner edge.

I place the bat on its edge on a flat surface then place a metal set square against the spines highest point, then measure from set square edge to bat face with a flat ruler or for an exact measurement ii use  outside and inside engineers micrometers.

All of these are so much simpler and quicker than the way I do it! :-[ I guess it's because I don't trust my own judgement enough, so I just take very easy measurements and work from there. Takes a bit of time, but I think it's reasonably accurate, as long as the bat isn't convex!

Oh gosh, it's pretty long winded... But, since you asked...

You need a ruler, tape measure, calculator and a set of calipers. (My calipers don't reach the spine, so can't measure the whole thing with that)

(1) First off, measure the camber of the bat face. Ideal if you have a GM, as they tell you anyways, but if the camber is unknown, get a measuring tape (The floppy ones used for measuring clothes etc) and put it across the toe from edge to edge. This is so you can see the camber shape. Then measure the depth of the camber, and note it down.

(2) Find the spine swell position, and measure the size of the edge (in mm) there and note it down. (Will be different from the edge swell if you have offset edges)

(3) Then from that exact point and edge, get a ruler and measure the distance between the back edge and spine. Note that down too in millimetres.

(4) Finally, measure the width of the bat, half that value and note it down.

Get a calculator, and square the value (3) and subtract the square of value (4). Find the square root of the answer given, then add values (1) and (2).

It's pretty long winded, but it works for me. I always get it incorrect when judging by eye, and my desk is such a mess that I can't do the methods mentioned above. :-[ Because you're calculating it though, you have to be pretty accurate with the measurements! Found out my GM actually has a spine height of 58.5mm instead of 61mm, as advertised... I'm very disappointed, to say the least! :D

I wouldn't mind spending money on that if I was a batmaker! £25 is a bit pricey for something which I could just work out with a ruler, but so is paying £300 for a bat when a £150 would probably do the same job! :-[

plus a ruler which you have already.

Ideally when you use  outside calipers ( shown in picture ) you need inside calipers for point  to point accuracy when you measure with a ruler.

Put the bat on a sheet of paper and draw round it. subtract the width of the pen/pencil.

This has to be the most simplest and accurate ways suggested in this thread so far.

I agree with Chad, just something in the eyes that creates a deception of some sort, wierd how that works.

I put my bat flat on a table, then hold a pen in line with the highest point on the spine, then I measure the distance between the face and the pen

I have never measured the spine height on a bat.

Does it matter?

P.s. Ross has come up with the easiest way so far!!

Just had ago at measuring the spine height of a bat i am going to sell by putting  the bat on a sheet of A3 and drawing around it with a sharp pencil, had 3 attempts but could not get it accurate due to the paper creasing each time.

You can't darw round an object, with out the paper moving, wow, really? Try blue tac or taping the paper in place....

Place the bat on its edge place something flat against the spine and measure the distance from the flat straight object and edge.

Paper, pencil, Bluetack, tape wow i think i will stay with Outside and inside micrometers.

Surely all you have to do is put the bat on its edge, place against a wall and measure from wall to the edge?
