Title: How to improve on the offside?
Post by: Slyboogy on May 19, 2014, 01:09:49 AM
Hi,

I have a big problem with playing shots on the offside, any ball outside of off stump I struggle with, I just swing and miss, however if the ball comes in to me I can hit it fairly well.

I also struggle when the ball comes on to the pads as I try to flick it away, but I play it too early and get hit on the pads.

How can I improve? It's getting a little tiresome.

Just play straight, keep your head down and watch the ball onto the bat. When the ball is on your pads play on-drives and not try flick (A habit I'm trying to get out of myself). If its outside off you can always just leave it

Have to say practice practice and practice, i was horrible last year for playing shots outside off stump i didnt need to play so over the winter in training i was told to leave everything and judge my offstump what i can play and what i shouldnt, it makes a big difference as for the leg side glance, i'm still working on that one as well but i am more confident moving my feet now due to this work and getting into line better to play shots last year i wouldnt have played.

Practice makes perfect or so they say

Well said, make it a habit to watch the ball and try to avoid flicking till your eyes are set. I always remind myself at start of innings to play straight.

Try to improve offside shots by practicing the late cut as you have a few seconds more swing the bat down from up high and roll your wrists to keep the ball down. Then when you are comfortable graduate to the square using the same method. If the ball is wide leave well alone.
