Title: Leg spinners
Post by: mohawks94 on May 19, 2014, 09:00:38 AM
As a leggie myself, I was wondering how others on here get the majority of their wickets. Before this season I have always got most of them caught or stumped, but this season I seem to be rattling the timber a bit more. My breakdown for wickets/figures is:
t20 - 2/9 off 2, one bowled and one LBW.
League - 5/36 off 8, four bowled and one caught.
League - 2/6 off  6.4, one bowled and one caught.
Overall I have 6 bowled, 2 caught and 1 LBW.
An explanation I can think of for my improved bowled statistics are that I have broadened out quite a lot and have been doing S&C work weekly since September (when fit), so I am more stable and able to get more pace on the ball without any real difficulty. Would be interested to hear how other leggies get their wickets :)
Cheers :)

For me it depends on how much bounce there is in the wicket. I've only played one game so far this season and our wicket has a lot less bounce compared to last year. So with an ideal length, instead of bouncing high and wide of off I can now attack the wicket with both my stock ball and my flatter out of the front of the hand (with a scrambled seem) ball.

So to answer your question, last year mostly catches (our keeper is not quick enough to stump).
This years only match, legspin - clean bowled, topspin - clean bowled, front hand slider(?) - easy dropped catch mid wicket and legspin - fine catch in the deep by our captain (after I just ribbed him for dropping three of mine last season). So an entertaining 5 overs then.

Hmmm..., I've never been coached with legspin, just tried to copy others from youtube. So what's S&C (he asks sheepishly)?

S&C is strength and conditioning. Not just going to the gym, but one of my uni sports teams gets sessions from an instructor because we are one of the highest achieving teams at the university and they want us to keep doing well.
Generally my wickets have been from regular leggies, but I have a bowled and LBW from quicker balls/wronguns, and a bowled from a top spinner. Ive had a couple of dropped chances behind the stumps of leggies, a missed stumping and a drop in the covers also off regular leggies.
We have quite a quick wicket and it is fairly bouncy, and with my height (6ft3ish) I get a lot of bounce.
I am largely self taught as well, started out as an opening bowler, was doing that for my district then changed after issues as a result of shortening my run up.

I'm an off spinner mate so it can't be me!  :D
But as it's a proven method I can't rule out trying it  ;)
