Title: Knowing Your Bat weight
Post by: charliemott on June 03, 2014, 01:30:03 PM
Just been browsing through topics and saw that alot of people are using scales.

Surely is it not what feels good? As with pick up - say my Bradbury picks up like a 2.8 but I am almost certain it is much heavier...but it isnt an issue, as it feels great.

Am I alone on this? I know Mike Hussey keeps a set of scales in his bag, is it just an OCD thing for people?

My octane feels right.
Last year I used a 2lb10 bat.

I put my octane on the scales and it's 2lb11.5

I haven't gone and bought a lighter one, it's just nice to know the weight (and edge size + spine height etc.)

This is fair enough. I guess I meant more to the point of when you buy one. Does the weight play a crucial part or is it what feels best. Obviously you need to know if the bat is light medium or heavy, but then I think it is what feels best...

If you know the shape then knowing weight can help if buying online, if buying on a shop you should never weigh the bat, buy purely on feel. I bought a Laver last year and thought that the special shape would be toe heavy and so lowered the weight, it came and was too light so wasted £200.....

Weight is important. Even if a bat has a lovely pick up and feel light the weight of the bat will still effecting things like bat speed, your ability to play cross bat shots and your ability to bat for long periods of time without losing your shape and technique.

purely on feel and shape of the handle. My bats usually are 2.9-2.11 as i dont like light bats or heavier ones. Only last year did i realise you could get a 2lb 6oz mans bat!!!

Must have an affect throughout the length of your innings though?

If you had a 2'12 bat which felt 2'8 but were batting for 6 hours i'd guess it would feel heavier as you got tired?

I'd struggle to bat for 6 balls at the moment, let alone hours!  :D

Apart from giving a fair idea of which bat to buy online , it also helps to know if you got a big bat for the given weight such as the low density willow.

It is purely up to the individual.

There is no right or wrong answer.

Until last season I thought I was batting with a 2lb10 bat... weighed it and it came in at 2'14.

For me, the weight issue is 50% what's in your hand and 50% what's in your mind.

The weight distribution on a bat is the key factor - this is where the OCD comes from. Moving the weight towards the pivot will always improve pickup (Amplus etc), and that's what people refer to when quoting weight (Which we all know has very little to do with pickup what so ever).

Bats should always, in my opinion, be picked up and felt for themselves. Weight is fairly irrelevant as pickup and feel is what most people are actually interested in. If one bat is 2lb10oz, it does not mean it will pick up the same as other 2lb10oz bats.

(To be honest, in coming to this conclusion, I have been through more bats than I am sure many of you have been through in a lifetime. :-[ )

There must be a element of psychology involved. When I was looking for a new bat at the start of the year I picked up a  GM purist and the owner of the shop said guess how heavy it is? I played a few shadow shots with it and guessed 2'9 when she told me it was a 2'12 I couldn't believe it. Knowing it was a 2'12 immediately made me think I couldn't use it properly in a game. Ended getting a 2'10 icon that picked up beautifully feels like a 2'7/ 2'8. Silly really

Agree Ginger, it is psychological... how can 20 grams spread over 1.2kgs really make a difference?

My opinion is that if you can pull a genuine quick in front of square and cover drive a loopy off spinner off the next ball then the bat is the correct weight... waiving a bat around the store like Luke Skywalker is no substitute.

I think the guys in the fixed weight camp have found their perfect weight and religiously stick to it.

The 'picks up like a 2lb 9oz' guys are probably more easy going and just adjust to their bats weight over the course of a few nets and games.

Both camps end up in the same place, it is just down to personalities.

I feel that bat weight makes no difference to me....

I have had 3 custom bats based on me going to a batmaker picking up some of his bats already made and liking the pick up resulting in me having a 2.7 2.9 and 2.12

I have liked all three and not been concerned about the weight because I liked the way they picked up.

There was a time when 2-6 was considered at the heavy end - Bradman era. His contemporary Bill Ponsford had a Big Bertha bat that weighed a colossal 2-12...

it wasnt until 2005 when i was 25 years old that i was asked what weight bat i wanted. Prior to that i used to just wave them around and say "this is the one"

I know the weight of all my bats  but now i only buy on pickup and feel with the gloves on.

I was thinking that my ideal weight would be 2.10 or 2.11 max. But my current bat weight 2.14 and when I got it I thought that it would be heavy but after a couple of practice sessions I was very comfortable with it.So for me the weight thing is just a mind thing.

I recommend all my friends who are buying bats to feel the bat and not to know the weight. If they like the feel and balance then that is the bat for them.

I believe Mike (Hussey) weighs his bat because he knows his right weight in a "Particuar" profile he uses, if he would change his profile he would surely have to adjust the weight accordingly. Weight should be anything which feels good in hand while using it, it's very hard imo to differentiate 1-1.5 oz difference for us non pros.

I have learnt (the expensive way) that bats always feel nicer and lighter in the store, than out on the ground, after fielding all day in the heat. So, I like knowing the weight, to reaffirm the nice feel, and to make sure I'm picking a bat that will feel equally nice when I'm actually using it.

no idea how much my bats weigh, I pick each one up in the morning before a game, the one I like the most that morning gets a game !

I've discovered that I'm rather like an unfaithful husband when it comes to my bats. There's one I always turn to and rely on, but occasionally, I'll take another out, use her, enjoy her company, and have a good time, but when I get home, I always feel a little bit dirty and wish I hadn't done it.

I know pretty much exactly all my bat weights, They are all between 2lb 10oz to 2lb 12....as for picking one...tried all different methods in past,, every match day I wake up and think I will be using bat X, in past I have not done that..been sticking to whatever bat my heart tells me first thing on match day and I now stick to that bat for that day...that way if I get out then no regrets...

I can use any weight, in fact do not look at weight when picking up and trying new bats its all about how they feel in my hands to me

What feels best... I'm using a 2lb 11 vantage that picks up 2lb 8.

I got an icon today.
While I was waving it round I thought "this must be about 2lb9 -2lb10"
I whacked it on the scales and it's 2lb13! Still, it picks up light (even lighter than I first thought now I know the dead weight) and feels nice in my hands, what more do you need?

Cheeky ;)

I think it's fine to try and guess the weight of a bat from pickup, it's all part of the fun. But once the weight is known, to then Put a precise number on exactly how much lighter it picks up is madness.

I know exactly what you mean.
I guessed the bat was 2lb9/2lb10 from the pickup, which feels light.

Now knowing the weight is 2lb13 I can say it picks up very light for its weight. I wouldn't put a number on it though as that's both pointless and meaningless.

I think it all depends on how it feels with gloves on. Lot of people I know (some who played decent level of cricket) never weighed their bats or knew exact weight of their bats. Its all pickup/feel and ping.
For me, I am very particular about weight if I am buying it online because you cannot pick it up before buying. It has to be 2lb 8-9oz and that assures me that it will not pickup heavier than that. Cant take the risk of buying something heavy hoping it to pick up lighter etc.
But if I am in a store (and thats rare here), I put it on the scale only at the end just to to be sure....

it's pretty simple...

Take a 1 lb weight and tape it on to the toe of your bat. I reckon the bat will feel a lot heavier than if you took that same bat and taped it onto the splice.

Agree ?

By putting weight on the bottom of the bat will make it feel heavier don,t know if anyone else can remember the original plastic toe guards which slide over the toe and covered around 4 inches of the blade they made the bat  very bottom heavy.

Of course i agree. Did you read the topic i linked to?

What does a '2lb 8oz' bat feel like though? Each and every bat feels different, 10 bats that weigh 2'8 all lined up in a row will feel totally different, so to say 'I have a bat that is 2'11 but feels 2'8' is nonsense. It may well feel light, but it can't 'feel' 2'8.

I will counter this I know what a 2-8 ounce bat feels like I have been using them for over 20 years so know roughly what it feels like with a high middle and low middle.

I also know when a bat without weighting them feels similar to the weight before I pick it up..

If it used for a sales point of view it is not great I agree to that but it is mainly a figure if speech.

I work more with volumes of wood for the weight or density as the forum calls it nowadays and also in the models of weight distribution over pick up.

Got to say  people think too much into things.

I remember the plastic  cover over the toe well
