Title: Moeen Ali's beard problem
Post by: TangoWhiskey on June 12, 2014, 01:05:04 PM
Just watching the cricket now and being quite gifted in the facial follicle department and therefore knowing how itchy a full beard can be, how do you think Moeen puts up with his chinstrap embedded in that great big on of his? All I can think about when watching him bat is how uncomfortable it must be!

It's his religion, I think he just gets on with it, similar to Amla

He is probably used to it by now.

I guess it is comparable to someone like Ryan Sidebottom wearing a helmet. It may not be the most comfortable, but he has his reasons.

I'm well aware it's his religion. I'm not knocking it, merely wondering if it is uncomfortable. When I've let my beard grow a month or so as soon as anything touches it it itches like crazy.

Although I don't tend to grow it asking as moeens, my beard doesn't itch.
If you take care of it(wash and oil) it will be fine.
the strap on both my old masuri and current ayrtek have posed me no issue in terms of comfort.

I would think that longer hair would probably be less itchy than shorter hair. I have tried growing a beard a few times, yes after a little bit it gets very annoying but I blame it on hair being not that long etc...a few times that I have gotten past that itch phase it gets more comfortable (relatively)...

I have a short beard now and it itches like a bitch, the chin strap makes it worst, so I just scratch it with my hand. I think if you have soft hair its less itichy.

Whatever  problems he has with it, I think its an amazing beard! Kudos to him, for wearing his religion so proudly, even if I'm devoutly un-religious. Would definitely walk into the World sports xi of beards!

Have to say I have an issue with religion(s) in general, but Ali does at least seem to be clear and genuine in his.  And it is a cool beard!

I'm with you there.

Religion is the ultimate G1++++++ snake oil laced bat.
The ball which hoops all day and turns on glass.

But, his beard is superb.

Not sure the title of the thread is fair. Is it a problem? Not to Mo. Maybe it's a thought in 'how do you cope?'

Has anyone checked his beard for birds?

I'll admit to maybe being a bit cheeky with the thread title, but I did mean it as an inquiry as to how it would affect him comfort wise.

Agreed, the root of all evil, but that's a different topic for a different forum!

Those two must have been separated at birth.  Uncanny resemblance between them! Just wish there was an uncanny resemblance between their respective batting averages too!

^^^really? They both have big beards but that's where the resemblance ends for me.

Also, has anyone read Michael henderson's incoherent rant in the telegraph? Absolute tosh!

Excellent, just bought the Telegraph and I think Hendo is a self-promoting, attention-seeking tit at times (Vaughan's father perhaps?) so I shall look forward to that.

Similarity in back-lifts.

Seems perfectly ok to me! Makes some very good pints! Could understand it if he was a muslim living in a country where the religion is oppressed, but he isn't! Fair play to him for being proud of it, but he is first and foremeost representing England, as a (very) Englishman!

I wonder if Monty's turban was much of an issue like this to English fans when he broke in to the England side?

I think I read the artical a little differently - ok Moeen's proud to promote being a Muslim, and proud to be in the English side.

I just feel that Hendo was making a point that didn't need making, and that it was a little contentious, just to get his writing noticed.

Just my opinion though.

Amla averages 51

Moeen averages 48

In test cricket, currently. Not too far apart. :-)

I do rate Ali highly and think that he is a classy batsman who can bowl well.
But Amla is a VERY classy batsman in my book and one of my favourites to watch when he's on form!!
Amla has proved himself to be World class already, whereas Ali needs to prove himself on that level!
Ali is showing true promise so far but only time will tell! Will need to see him against the SA and Aussie bowling attacks to get a better picture of whether he'll show the same class at that top level. But fingers crossed!

Here's Henderson article;
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/10897999/Youre-playing-for-England-Moeen-Ali-not-your-religion.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/10897999/Youre-playing-for-England-Moeen-Ali-not-your-religion.html)

Lot of hot air if you ask me, no actual insight. Load of old rubbish, also when did Mo say this? Very average reporting.
