Title: Gray Nicolls bat re-handle and weight adjustment
Post by: xmncx on June 16, 2014, 04:06:34 PM
Hello gents,

I'm a first time poster so be gentle...

I just wanted to ask has anyone experienced the Gray Nics re-handle/weight adjustment service and is it any good? I'm pretty confused as to why more people don't just send their bats off and get the size and weight adjusted to them for a fraction of the cost of buying a £400+ custom from GN?

A custom GN from us is £325.

Altering a bat after production is much more difficult, it is also quite limited in terms of what can be done, i.e. if a bat is already concaved you can't make it non concaved, if it has a high middle it is very difficult/impossible to make it have a low middle, etc.

Grays after care service is very good, and we send many bats on behalf of our customers to be repaired/refurbed.

Thank you for the response Vitas.

It's good to know. Long story short, I have recently got a great deal on a GN powerbow LE in a SH but because I'm a short a*se (5ft 5) it's a bit too big and at 2.12 a too little heavy. I'm just wondering what my options are.

A weight reduction and shortening of the handle are 2 of the simpler services that Grays offer I would imagine. Get in touch and see what they say.

So I have gone ahead and had my bat sent off to the GN workshop.

The bat was a Gray Nicolls Powerbow LE (2010) that weighed in at around 2lbs 10oz, I have requested the bat weight be adjusted to around 2lbs 6oz before fittings 2.7 when finished with the scuff sheet/grips added.
I have also requested the SH handle be changed to a Carbo Harrow handle I hoping this will make the bat lighter without compromising the bat profile too much while being more suited to my small frame.

All I can do now is wait and see what the results are.

I have had a search on this forum and the handle retrofit doesn't seem to have been done before... Hope I haven't ruined the bat

Your adjustment and rehandle should be okay at 5ft 5 tall 2lb 7ounces should pickup and feel just right. A thinner handle can effect pickup though but an extra grip if needed will help.

I took my GN to the factory a few years ago for weight reduction and refurb, although it was a really good bat I felt it was too bottom heavy for me.  It was excellent value (less than £30 if my memory serves me well) however with hindsight I'm not sure I'd do it again, although it came back better balanced for me, I think it never "went" quite as well again.  Of course I never knew about this forum then...

I got a weight reduction and refurb on my Chase not long after joining this forum.
I've now seen the error of my ways, I should've just bought 2 new bats in hindsight!  ;)

I will post some pictures when it arrives back. The turn around time according to GN is 10 to 14 days during the season so not that long to wait. The GM academy size was tempting me but having had one in my hands it just didn't feel as powerful as it's senior counterpart.

Saying that the best bat I have ever owned was a Harrow GN gladius titanium and it was like a tooth pick

You don't need to have a GN to get it rehandled mate. They will do it on any bat for £35

I have received the bat back today and it's excellent.

The Carbo handle and the weight reduction has really improved the feel of the bat.

Looks an excellent job, how does it play or haven't you used it yet?

Is that the Nemesis that they have restickered with Oblivion stickers?

Powerbow

Spot on. It was a Powerbow from around 2010.

I like the e41 stickers so I asked could I have them put on after the weight reduction and they said it was no problem.

I never realised the Powerbow had such a dramatic hump!

Looks a bit bottom heavy, at least theyve taken the weight from the top of the bat rather than the meat. Excellent refurb job.

It is a little bottom heavy but it's got the foam 'Sorbo' under grip and two other grips on it so the pickup feels super light.

Considering it cost me £43.50 all in, they have done a super job.

It doesn't usually have the massive hump on it but because I wanted it so light they have had to do it that way to get it to the desired weight.

Please see previous reply. I quoted the wrong post.
