Laver and Wood are running a great deal on their facebook page where you get a custom special reserve (butterfly) bat for 330 USD shipped to US or 210gbp shipped to UK.
Here are a few things about me and my batting.
1. I am 5' 6"
2. I Play only T20 games at the moment and might play 40 over games next season.
3. Currently Bat at Number 4 or 5.
4. I grip the bat very low on the handle.
5. Mostly play on JUTE MAT wickets so usually not much bounce.
6. Shots I like to play are drives and pull shots and nudges and cuts on ball bowled outside off and of course some aerial shots as it's a T20
7. I am looking at something with light pick up between 2-7 and 2-9.
8. Not crazy about big edges but would like something with minimal to no concaving.
9. Obviously something with a huge extended middle.
Would be great to get some recommendations from forum experts on the profile that would best suite my needs.
Considered purchasing Nmcgee's Laver but couldn't justify crazy shipping costs around 25% of the price of the bat and not getting something that is made for me.

I've nothing against laver bats,(I have one), but check out some of the pictures Paul Aldred has posted,of his grade one butterfly bats
Amazing quality, and a very good price
The b3 butterfly bats also look excellent value, and get very good reviews

I've been following Paul's thread and he has produced some amazing bats. I have no doubt that he can make bats on par with Laver, his bat is on my wishlist but one wish at a time.

Hey Tejas,
Check out the Black Cat Joker profile or the H4L Hattori profile, would suit our US conditions perfectly.
-
Hi mate, the Laver Special profile with a 1/2 inch shorter blade and SSH sounds like it would suit your play. Let them know via a bat sizing form, James has been in the industry for years, so knows a thing or two about what would suit different batsmen. Get a 2'7, as knowing Lavers, they tend to pick up a bit of weight. (Workshop must be very dry compared to the UK) Also, here's a code for 15% off your purchase:
AOC.LW.15
Hope this helps! If all fails, you could just get the Chad profile, but I think it generally comes in a slightly heavier weight. :-[ Just ask James, he'll come up with something!

Chad, thanks for this super advice. I do like the profile on the pictured bat so if all fails, chad profile it is.

Hey Tejas,

Kal, the joker profile might not work as I hold the bat from low on the handle and might create some issues with my normal stance.
Will discuss with these two profiles James to see what he thinks.
-
That is a beautiful profile.
-
M&H Solution profile, fantastic hitting on low bounce pitches and enables you to get under the ball with ease. I might not go there direct as costly but speak to someone on here who can get the bat made for you custom fitted for under £200.
-
There no doubting laver are great bats. I agree with Chadders and aim for the lowest weight so 2-7 as there bats always put on a few ounce after a year or two.
-
I would do a custom hunts Butterfly for just over £100, most sensible shape/size requests are entertained.

Tejas, I believe that the Joker has a 1" shorter blade and 1" longer handle so you could ask for a SSH, but Chad's profile looks great and it's a L&W. So it makes it really simple to let James know what you are looking for.And if the 15% stacks on the FB special you mentioned, it should be one hell of a bargain.
And btw, I played in NJ last week against CLNJ in the ACCL tournament. We batted first on a damp wicket and needless to say the ball kept really low.

Hey I know where you played...you were supposed to play on our ground but you went to the one next to it as you thought ours was damp. By the time out game started it was nice and dry except one area with a couple of small puddles.
-
The 15% didn't stack but he agreed to do the ready to play service. Knocking in and oiling.
-
The Toby Richardson profile with ssh should do the trick.

Awesome..so which profile are you getting? Even though they say it's ready to play..you might have to knock it in a bit. At least one of my teammate who ordered a laver had to.
-
Well he said he would include free knocking in service so should be equivalent to other paid knocking services. Would reduce 4 hours of work.
-
Agree with Chad and D7bow, Get 2'7

I second this, as soon as I had seen Chad's new Laver I knew I had to go for it, got it about a month and a half back, surprisingly didn't get enough time to put it on CBF, will do soon. I just mentioned "Chad" profile to him and he recognized it and mentioned that there have been few other inquiries regarding it. Long middle slightly curved profile thick toe is what I asked for.
-
Last L&W TR special I received was pressed optimally and looked ready for play, this time I mentioned to have a bat which can play right from the word go and this time it came slightly softer pressed. On both occasions I asked Anthony if I should knock it and he mentioned to just have a few 30-40 mins throwdowns with a softer ball & it is ready to go.

Surely you can't go past the Bradman profile ;-)

Such a delightful shape that Bradman bat

My vote is for the Red Ink Sirius profile with a super short oval handle with more thickness at the bottom.. I am sure that L&W will be able to replicate the Sirius profile for you. Looks like my style of play is very similar to yours.. I have used mine for only one practice session so far... Feather light pickup, well balanced with a low weight (like 2.8) which made it so much easier to adjust to the variable speed and bounce on the mat at the last minute..

I was hoping to order some extra scuffs like half a dozen from Laver and Wood. Asked Anthony about it and he said that it can be added to my order for 7 usd each which is pretty reasonable. I have never seen a laver scuff so can someone tell me if they have edge protection like hammer edge ones.
-
Last one I had with a scuff had no edge protection... Just standard scuff... Pretty good quality though
-
The ones on mine have the edge protection, they are excellent quality as well.
-
So it's a gamble in terms of what I will get. I will just add them to the order add get some edge tape on my own.
-
Mine was 3 weeks ago. Just ask them for the scuff you want.

Thanks for the tip. I will let him know by email that I want ones with edge protection.

I'll do a brief review of the bat right here instead of creating a new topic.
I placed the order for Special reserve on the 19th of June was told the turn around is 2-3 weeks and received the bat on 22nd of July (delivered to NYC). The bat was shipped from L&W warehouse on the 17th of July so the shipping was fairly quick.
Requested the following things.
Weight: 2-7
SSH c-ten oval handle
1/4 to 1/2 inch short blade
Minimal to no concaving
Low middle
Best pick up possible considering the positioning of the middle
Thicker shoulders and spine running all the way up to aid the pick up
A fun personalized sticker (with some funny words)
what I received
Weight: 2-8.5 (on my infant's weighing scale accurate up to .5 oz) (lets hope it doesn't pick up much weight as warned by many) Considering that it's got a shorter blade and handle requested weight was possible
SSH c-ten oval handle. The handle feels great in terms of size and shape.
1/4 to 1/2 inch short blade
no concaving
Low middle
Pick up on the bat is not so great and it felt heavier than my 2-11 BB and 2-9 Redback. First time I picked up I thought they had sent me a 2-12 bat.
The profile could have been a bit even to aid the pick up and shoulders could have been a bit thicker. Wouldn't have had a problem if minimal concaving was done to shift wood here.
Huge spine and happy with it
Personalized sticker is missing
Bounced the ball a bit on the bat and the response off the middle is pretty good but BB & Redback had relatively better bounce. I think it will match the other two once knocked in and opens up
Size of the hitting area is not as big as the BB and Redback but Just like above hope it will respond better in some areas after opening up
Finishing on the bat is great
Really didn't like the Red fleece sleeve the bat came in. Would have preferred neoprene sleeve. The bat came out with red fibers stuck on the edges of the toe, stickers and scuff.
Personally I feel Anthony was prompt in responding to emails. Didn't feel like it was a great custom experience other than initial requirements. I was expecting some interaction such as "Can't do the profile you want in the weight you requested, it'll be heavier or concaved or should adjust profile in xyz manner."
I had ordered six additional scuff sheets and had specified that I wan't the ones with edge protection (like hammer edge) received clear type sheets without any edge protection.

Tejas
I had some issues too from my recent order. I have ordered 5 bats from Laver and wood and requested to have 1/2" longer blade on all of them and super short handle with no scuff sheet fitted but sent with the package. After receiving the bats here is what i found
1. 4 bats are made to Super short handle and Standard Blade size
2. 1 bat is made to exact specification
3. No scuff sheets sent
4. Asked for specific grips , they didn't have them in stock so they sent me some lose which they have in stock.
5. almost all bats have picked up weight, i ordered 2.11 and most of them came at 2.11.1 on scales when i weighted as soon i took the bats out of the package. As of yesterday they all weight close to 2.12.10 now
-
I have sent a feedback email to Anthony with the things that I felt were not handled properly with my order.
-
Sorry to hear it has t gone to plan mate. Its a shame as in some ways I really like L&W bats but always been out off buying due to weight never appearing to be correct. Does also look like a small bat for the weight regardless of the fact its only 2.8
-
Sorry to hear that mate. I am sure the guys at Laver will do everything they can to rectify the problems. I have never bought a special reserve before and would assume that they, like all lower grade bats take a bit longer to open up. I think what we have also learned is to ask for a photo of the final weight (Gripped, scuff sheet applied etc) before it leaves NZ.
I have always and will continue to support Laver as I have always had the most superb bats turn up on my doorstep. Miles better than anything I have ever used (Although my new H4L is looking pretty sweet).
It is a big investment for you so you are well within your rights to ask for the problems to be fixed.

Well if you compare it to the Redback (2-9) it does look small for a 2-8.5 with shorter blade & handle as they both have long spine and similar edge sizes.

I have heard a lot of good reviews about Laver quality and service. In terms of the performance I have no doubts that the bat will open up and perform. Lets hope at least the scuff sheet issues are resolved cause I had ordered them for club mates and they specifically asked for ones with edge protection.
-
After reaching out to Anthony they agreed to replace them with correct specs. My pervious laver and wood bats have played really well like some of you said they took little while to open up.
-
i wonder if James is really doing the bats ? or someone else is ... i got a special reserve few 2 weeks back ..after 2 net session with old ball last night the handle broke or is it the C-ten handles are no good ?
