Title: Season so far and your thoughts
Post by: SOULMAN1012 on July 08, 2014, 08:04:48 AM
Hi all. With the season now at the half way point just thought it would be good to hear people's views on the season so far not just personal achievements but how you have found your cricket this season.

My first thought has been that the season has favoured bowlers so far. The start of the season was very wet after the rain and storms of the winter and early spring producing slow pudding pitches that made timing a ball very hard and also made pitches very green and seam friendly and outfields very long with the sun/rain combo we had.  the last month or so has seen very hot weather that has made tracks hard and dusty and good for spinners.

Personally I have also seen a few instances where the "spirit of cricket " has been replaced with a win at all costs attitude but I guess that's been in the game for a while.

From a personal point of view I have had a good start to the first round of league matches with four score of 50+ in league cricket but disappointed I havnt converted yet this year. My side find themselves 3rd in our league going into the second round of fixtures for the league season.

One of the highlights has been the quality in youth players I have seen in league cricket whilst I'm not playing prem level anymore and only championship it's been good to see that cricket still seems to be a sport that young players 15-18 still want to play. In fact the best bowler I have faced this season was a 17 yr old seamer ( even though his chat didn't match his pace lol )

So all in all iv enjoyed the first half of the season and looking forward to the 2 be half before the long nights of winter set in and the silly end of season kit buying starts again.

As a spinner I've sat back and watched the seamers exploit the wickets this year.

Our batting hasn't really fired on all cylinders yet so maybe you're right about the pitches.

Only won once in the league this year (I hate cricket!)

On a personal note I'm half eying up the overall bowling award for the club but will probably fall short by a distance :(

season ruined by my midwinter organ failure. and extreme unfitness because.

starting to pick up though. 51, 49*, 40 my only scores in double figures though.

still we are top wed, 2nd sat, 2nd sunday(1st xis) 2nd wed and bottom 4 sat(2nd xis) and our 3rds have had all but 3 games rained off!. our junior sides are thriving, and in the top 3 in all age groups.

Currently sat 3rd in the league after playing some truly horrific cricket at times. Of late the batting has been firing but bowling and fielding from all could be improved. To find ourselves still in with a sniff after losing a few games is great to see!

Have enjoyed this season less than any I can remember.  Weather has been awful - we've had one genuinely nice Saturday in twelve weekends - which means I've been struggling for motivation and of course the pitches have been an absolute nightmare to bat on.  A couple of big tons apart, I've mostly batted like a drain too, which doesn't help!

Currently sat third in our league on a Saturday.  Only 3 strong teams in our league out of 10 and 2 go up so really need to win all our remaining matches.

Sunday, joint first in our league and in the conference cup quarter finals and two 2020 competitions.

On a personal note I've racked up 669 runs at over 35.  A decent season, batting in the top 4 every match which is helping.  Hoping to rack up the 1k this season.  Thats the dream! :-[

Been terrible for me. First year skippering and regularly have 15-20 people unavailable further up the club which means my team has nowhere near what it should be. Played 7, won 1, 1 abandoned and lost 5.

Personal form hasn't been great. 36, 5, 0, 55, 7 have been my scores. Have had to sacrifice myself up the order as have had no other batsman and whilst im happy to do it for the team i dont like opening and dont feel comfortable doing it.

Massive plus points have been the u15's we've brought up from the colts and we've defo found some cricketers with a very bright future. If only the adult members were as good and as entuisiastic as them!

Politics and some ridiculous behaviour from some club members have left me not enjoying my cricket and offered my resignation on Sunday. Enjoyment of cricket has plummeted to the point where i wake up hoping is raining, not good really. Oh well only 7 games to go!

In terms of the cricket we are playing, and from a personal point of view, it has been terrible! Have scored 130 runs in 8 innings, and we have been slaughtered every week. In terms of enjoyment however, I'm having the most fun ever. Vice-captain, head coach, senior player, back at the club I left 3 years ago. playing with a great bunch of lads, even though they are (No Swearing Please) cricketers. Will take us a few years for this group to find our level, but think it will involve consecutive relegations!

Have restarted the junior section after a break of 12 years as well (hence the reason why we are struggling so badly.... no youth), and have nearly 50 9-11 year olds every week for training which is incredible. Just a big gap between them and the senior teams at the moment, but the future is bright!! :D

Bowling wise, have loved the responsibility of opening the bowling week in,  week out. I have managed to pick up 14 wickets at 13 so far, felt alot more comfortable with my action and rhythm.

Batting has been a hopeless accept for a couple of 35 retired on Monday nights.

Also lined up to skipper in a few weeks, whick will be my first time. It should be an exciting finish to the season as we sit in 4th place attempting to get promotion.

Poor with the bat as always, not a batsman see. Managed only 2 runs from 3 innings. Bowling hasn't been up to much either, pitches around here seem to be favouring spinners rather than seamers at the moment. Have picked up 5-62 in 6 games excluding the 3 balls I went for 12 in mid-week. In my mind that never happened.

Taken 26 wickets in the league at the turn (6 games) @ 9.1 a wicket

Batting hasn't been great. Batted 4 innings, not a single one over 25.

Lets hope for a better 2nd half to the 2014 season!

saturday league has been a struggle haven't had 3 of our best players available yet this season we currently sit bottom of the table and i cant play anymore this season due to work.

friendly village side has gone quite well won more then we have lost. my batting has been a struggle one 50 a couple of 30s and a lot of single figures plus my scoring rate has been slower then usual. on the plus side i have taken a few wickets and currently near the top for wickets taken.

the award should be between me and a very good mate so always leads to some good banter if one of us doesn't get a wicket

Much of a muchness so far. We've had 4 games rained off and lost 100 wickets from the side we had last year so the promotion challenge we hoped for hasn't materialised. Still it has allowed 2 young bowlers to come in to the side and both are progressing nicely, although an upper mid-table is now the best we can hope for realistically.
Personally I'm still trying to adapt (mentally as much as anything) from being an opener in the 2's to batting 6/7/8 in the 1's and although I am not scoring as many runs as I would like I feel in good nick so hopefully only a matter of time before I come good.

Pretty disappointing season for me so far! After getting 70 towards the end of last season, I was hoping I'd be accomplishing similar feats, however with a top score of 39 coming at the early stages of the season, I haven't really pushed on, averaging 11.25 from 13 games. And with not being able to play for 4 Saturday games in August (off to Australia for 3 weeks :D :D) I could really do with scoring some big big runs in the next 3 weeks.

Disappointing for me. A ton and two fiftys at 37, given my wicket away needlessly at various points of the season and I've been struggling with niggling injuries to my wrists, shoulder and knee which have held me back more than I'd like to admit.

Only played two league games on Saturdays due to 5 being called off due to bad weather and one because the opposition could not raise a team. The division is also a mismatch of teams  there are  clubs who have one strong team of experienced players  playing against  third and fourth teams with a couple of experienced players but mainly younger inexperienced players. In fact has there is no promotion for clubs with one team it Was possible to predict who will finish first second and third in the division prior to the start of the season.

So tonight big midweek game us(joint top) vs joint top.

And the u17s league organise a cup game as well as our 2nds having a game.

Do that's 7 u17s missing that play midweek plus 4 guys on holiday. But being a massive club we fielded 33 players.

So back to firsts. Joint tops game.  Winner takes league.  Missing our 2 best bowlers they make 123 of 13 overs.
We only have five batsmen, and get off to a flyer. 53 off the first 3 and a half overs. Me on 37 and I miss a straight on. Sam smashes one down Long off throat. 3 bowled and then 5 caught.
Only the one batsmen left and we are 60 for 4.

Managed to scrap to 105. Came up short. Dissapointing as without the u17s cup game wed have had 2 more batsmen and a bowler.

Gutted

Nearly sliced my thumb off on Saturday evening so no cricket for me until at least next weekend. Can't even bend it at the moment.

Last week 42* in my first game on English wickets for 10 years .... Was a pudding and very very slow

A win in the lms tonight,  but for the fourth match it was practically the last ball.  Still,  a win is a win...

I e not enjoyed my cricket this year at all. Few people seem to play hard but fair. It seems that sledging is getting worse and win at all costs is the be all and end all.

Apart from that, the club are top of all their leagues by a mile apart from the t20 which we are throwing as we don't want to go up. Teams batting well with everyone contributing and our bowling is by far tthe best in the league which is nice to see.. Oh and the age is down in the low 20's.

Personally, I'm on about 26 innings and over 1000 runs already and I've felt out of form all season as the wickets are crap. 6 league games and only three 50's which is a shame. Still on course for 2k+ runs in the season for a second year running.

Why not fold the t20 if your not interested in winning? Seems a waste of a night,

Everyone enjoys playing mate, we just rotate people so it's rare we bat in many proper order and often are bowling our batsmen (so I bowled last week having bowled all of one over this season etc).

We do well enough as people are pretty good overall bit don't want to go up as there are some teams in the top div who aren't overly nice to play etc. People aren't interested in going to play those types of teams in t20. People like the extra batting time and we use it as a way to give guys who missed out at the weekend a bat etc. Bowling wise we just do whatever, so last week we didn't have one bowler who'd bowl first or second team for instance.

Just as an example, last weeks batting order

1- second team no 10
2 - second team no 11
3- third team skipper
4- second team no 6
5 first team no 8
6 first team no 9
7 second team no 5
8 first team no 5
9 first team no 2
10 first team no 3
11 first team no 1

So yeah, we just play to enjoy it rather than for the win.

It seems a lot of batsmen are struggling due to the weather.  A summer for bowlers aside from the test match grounds apparently!

Well, with the arrival of no. 2 child in February, I had no nets and made two midweek practices.  The club have been very understanding about everything and I've been lucky enough to be picked for the 1st's for most of the games I've played (I did say at the start of the season I would play 2's as I felt that I couldn't commit to 1st team cricket). Anyway, I had my first game back after three weeks off for weather / having to look after kids. Ran two of my team mates out and whilst I was comfortable at the crease and didn't feel threatened by the bowling, my timing was somewhat off and b*ggered up setting a decent total for the team within the last few overs of innings

We lost by one wicket in the end, so a good fight by the lads but my contribution this year has been poor which I am gutted about, but other things have taken priority resulting in my poor contribution.

I feel a spell in the two's coming up and rightly so. In 20 odd years playing 1st team league cricket, I've only had half a season playing two's because of poor form.

Not happy !!
