As an addition to the 40th Birthday of the original GN100 Perimeter-Weighted Gray Nicolls bat, affectionately known as the Scoop, I though a topic describing your first interaction with this iconic range of bats would be appropriate...
For me it was in 1988, and I was 12. It was during my first summer at a new school. My friend's dad had bought him a GN Twin Scoop and I thought it was a wonder versus the dull GM Cannons in the kit bag. I never lusted after the GN100 or the GN500, elegant as it is. As a result of his Twin Scoop, I pooh-poohed the SS Turbo that another friend had and embarked on the purchase of a way too heavy V12, whilst longing for a Twin Scoop. A longing I was to satiate in the mid-nineties when I purchased a Dynadrive.
And finally, with its re-introduction last year, I was able to get myself a proper Long Blade Dynadrive that is now my trusty bat of choice....
Ah Gray Nicolls, what did you do to me with your funky range of bats missing bits...?

Used my old man's Scoop back around the early 90's. It was rubbish.

Always wanted one after watching Lara destroy oppositions with it.
An old man at our club got hold of one, and it ended up in our kit bag as it was a plank!
My list no longer wanted one, and I bought a county insignia instead.

But taking Scoop as a range (as per the blog), did anyone else first use/see a Dynadrive, Twin Scoop, GN500 or (heaven forbid) Megapower/Sabre, bats that I always have felt have more middle than the GN100?
-
A lad at our club has just retired a zyphos! Was kinda dyna drive but smaller lower scoops. It had a thunderous middle, and he hit many a massive six with it!

Oh yes, had one of those - picked up a Pro-Performance from Decathlon that went like a dog on heat. It was more than 3lb though and I struggled to wield it effectively and ultimately sold it. Kit some cracking fours.....

His was 2.15, not sure many came in the lower weights.

Yeah I had a Xiphos, it was an absolute gun. I think it weighed about 2.14 but it felt 2.10 at most. I'd get it out and weigh it again but half of it is missing :(

Always lusted after the scoops
My best gray Nicholls tho was a gn World Cup 5 star supreme,,paid 25 quid for it from a lad who said it was too heavy for him
I think it was about 2.8!!!
Scored 98 first time I used it
Must have put a few runs on it before the handle broke
It's the only bat I've hung onto

I think I know an old kit shed that has some of those, maybe all of them - in various states of disrepair...

First real bat was a GN100 Scoop when I was about 14 I think. Had a beautiful middle. My mate got one first and I pestered my parents till I got one

I'd like to say Lara, but I think it was Chris Lewis...

First bat I used as an under 13. Didn't have my own kit so borrowed some of the clubs. Think it was a junior version of the scoop. Will have a look when I'm playing at home next week.
