One of the all time greats and arguably the best player of the decade has retired from international cricket.
Over 25000 international runs, 577 wickets and 338 catches makes King Kallis without doubt a true great of the game.
-
Jacques, absolute 'Living Legend'.
I never used to care too much about players retiring. However, the likes of Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist, Ponting, Tendulkar, and now Kallis to name but a few have really hit me in recent years.
I must be getting old !!

:( :( :( :(

i think what he achieved is phenomenal his stats are some of the best ever. would walk into any test side ever i would say he is the best all rounder ever
-
Most underrated player ever! Has not got close to near enough credit, quite possibly the best all rounder ever.
-
Just waiting for someone to say that his test match bowling can't be classed as 'World Class' because (and I quote) 'it is above 30 and that cannot be World Class'.
His batting's ok though.
-
Stats would say he is not a world class test bowler, 292 @ 32.65
-
Even Jimmy's average is better and he is a home town bully :P
Jokes aside, great cricketer, sad to see whenever such a talent calls it quits.
-
I think the stats tell you what you need to know.
45 test centuries - second only to tendulkar.
Third on the all time list of test run scorers - behind.... Tendulkar and Ponting
Better average than Tendulkar, Ponting, Lara and Dravid
Better bowling average than Sobers
A quite astonishing player!
-
With out a doubt the best all rounder to have ever graced the game of cricket.
-
Amazed Kallis was so underrated IMO. Probably a better bet than lots of other greats and could have walked into any international team on batting / bowling merit alone!!
-

Was he underrated? I didn't think anyone thought he wasn't an absolute world class performer? Having someone that good batting at 3 that gave you a bowling option capable of being a front-line seamer and a fantastic pair of hands too.
Potentially the best "cricketer" to have played the game?

Easily in my opinion.

I think un-celebrated is a better term than under-rated. Everyone associated and watching world cricket knew how good he was!
-
Yea.. "un-celebrated" is probably a better term.
Look at how the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid are treated here in India. I was talking in that context.
-
A world class player indeed. And he is unfortunate to not have any major ICC trophies.
-
He was a superb bowler but his batting was absolutely brilliant!
I loved the way he managed to stay so focused on his batting, even if his teammates were losing their wickets! He never seemed to panic and seemed to value his wicket highly!
But lets not forget that his catching was also brilliant!
In my book, we have now seen the greatest all-rounder retire from cricket!
Yes, people will quote Sobers, Botham, etc as World Class, and these guys were!
And I know that stats don't always tell the whole story, but Kallis is without doubt, the greatest all-rounder to have ever played!
My heart really goes out to SA, as he will be impossible to replace!!
-
He was 2 cricketers in one
When for a top class bowler and always a top class batsman as a all rounder not many have in the history come close.
Unfortunately because he just got on with it will he be remembered by the bigger community as the best ever not sure but what a player a role
Model.

We won the 1998 ICC Knock Out, which in the modern day is called the ICC Champions Trophy.
Kallis was man of the match in the final.
-
King Kallis an absolute legend. Could bat for ever without getting bored. Magnificent slip fielder. And not to shabby with the ball.
As for Kallis' bowling average, in his younger days he was rapid 90mph with an average under 30. In the last 6/7 years bowling became more a holding job.

But will he be remembered like Sobers Botham even with his stats

Sorry Botham? You having a laugh? Imran was better than Botham...
Sir Gary or King Kallis. That's all in this debate.

Hey not saying who is better but Botham is known as a legend and kids even today know who he is all over the world and yes I have been all over the world.
I said remembered not quality pal think Kallis is brilliant. But will he be remembered by non stats based cricket nerds I doubt it.

Well South Africans don't get the same media attention as Australians, English, Indian or West Indian players.
But that's life...
Anyone who saw Kallis will remember what he brought to the table.

Paul Adams was aided by the most magnificent bowling action Test cricket's ever seen! :D
FdV was top bloke.
-
Hansie got plenty as well
-
It must also be noted that the way he went about his cricket was in a way to be admired, he was never one to upset a team or umpires, he's a very good role model for any cricketer at any level.
-
Statistically he has to be one of the best players of all time but he didnt have the personality or charisma as the likes of Warne, botham, lara. Thats why he wont be remembered as much as others. Great player but pretty boring to be honest.

I can't recall Lara having much charisma. It takes all sorts, Kallis always struck me as someone who was happy within himself, just got on with his game, pretty much a captains dream.
-
One of the few players who could win his team the game as a batsman or as a bowler. He will leave a big hole to fill in the South African team.

I'd have the 'pretty boring' Kallis in my team any day and so would many others I presume. I don't understand how he can be descricbed as boring if you have watch him play in different situations throughout his careers. Always seemed to do what was needed of him by the team. Impossible to replace him currently.
