Title: New GCCC gear online
Post by: BigBlueMachine on August 01, 2014, 07:30:06 AM
So it seems the GCCC website has been updated with the 14/15 season gear.
One thing that struck me was the exclusive to GCCC kookaburra range, the Patriot. The top end bat goes by the name 'custom' yet it is off the shelf and nowhere near being a custom. Plus it looks like ant other kookaburra barring the bubble (no surprise there). It doesn't show how much concaving but the description 'raised spine, flat face and enormous edges' suggests to me concaving. Although the price of $675 is a lot lower than other brands top of the range.
The best thing I've seen is the singing esky by spartan!

So if it's a bat to the retailers specs why isn't custom?

Yeah I get what your saying. But on that theory all the bats in this range should be a custom, yet the grading goes, Custom, Missile LE, Missile, NRG.
Custom to me mean unique to the person and made specific to their specs.

I am sure another retailer is carrying that range as well, maybe meulemans?

So maybe it's not exclusive to GCCC. I must have assumed it was.

They've also Concaved the bubble...

Patriot is exclusive to "big" stores.

The word "custom" also means tradition, which could be their interpretation or it could mean normal or routine as in, it's made in the same routine as every other bat they have?

I walked into Greg Chappell and swung a few bats around today. I have to say I was disappointed the store I went to didn't have the GN Gold Legend. I'd really like to see it in the flesh - I can't imagine that there would be a bat worth $1175 AUD or 650 GBP!

I was very impressed with the Kooka Patriot - the 2.9 version I swung around felt very well balanced. Bat of the day though was the 2.10 Puma EvoPower White Edition. Felt like an awesome bat - beautiful balance - and felt like it could tear a bowling attack in half. I'd love to get one into the nets for a bit of a play. Anyone wish to donate me some cash to purchase it? I'll write a review on it!

I was in the Albion store yesterday afternoon. Most bar the Spartan and Puma bats are in.
I had a look at the Patriot, as I was under the impression it was exclusive to GCCC and it is heavily concaved as well. Not quite as bad as my two SG bats I picked up in India last year, but pretty close.
I was very underwhelmed by pretty much everything in the store. The GN Gold Legend at $1200... about 700 pound was the most underwhelming.

Best bat in the store for my was one of the Shane Watson Profile GM Icons. But at $820, you can find plenty of better bats without paying for the GN, Kookaburra, GM etc branding.

I saw the new bubble in Kingsgrove a couple of weeks ago and it was concaved as well. So it's basically a UK Menace with Bubble colour scheme!

The great Aussie rip off continues. Nice to see a few smaller brands offering better products for cheaper prices (I know it's had a pit of exposure on here the last couple of days and I'm in no way connected but Focus looks particularly good value!). I work next to a Rebel and was in there picking up a bat Mallet the other day and they were just unloading their new range, utterly terrifying the prices they were asking for bats you'd pick up in Sports Direct in England for 100 quid odd.

But sticking on topic I actually like the look of the Patriot softs but all in all I'm completely underwhelmed by most of the new gear.

After having a good read through this years GCCC catalogue I think I'll be importing bats from the UK from now on. Absolutely ridiculous pricing.

Which model bats are cheaper in the UK?

Most of the kookabura range skip. Look at uzisports website.

Different ranges though, I can't see much difference in the comparable models.

Take a GM Icon original for example

$620au at Greg Chappel/Aussie stores

first UK website I came across $405au plus say $60 postage - big difference!

Ha Ha yeah good luck with that, it's out of stock for starters ( meaning they put any price they like, nothing in stock will be that cheap) the conversion rate puts it nowhere near that price. The closest genuine I found was about $20 cheaper shipped here for a sight unseen bat. Bat companies don't want retailers in either country missing out on sales so pricing is kept pretty close, 12 months ago when our dollar was very strong compared to the pound I agree you could get similar products cheaper, that's why their is a difference, it's not an Aussie rip off, mark ups will be similar in both markets.

Maybe, but with a few mins searching I've found one for approx $460 in stock so there's still savings to be had.

2.9lb hmm it's  tempting

You'd probably be lucky to find the bat you're after at this stage in the uk season though I'd imagine.

That's exactly right, it's that price for stock that has sat there all season, it's still works out about 520 au to get it here. There is a retailer here selling the purist original for $425. It's up to people how they spend their money but it's a myth that it's automatically cheaper to buy from the uk.

Note to moderator.... Feel free to move this to pads but its on a theme about observations from the GCCC catalogue.

On another note the GCCC catalogue highlighted (to me at least) the lack of differentiation and innovation in the cricket pads sector... I know there's only so much you can do and radical designs have not sold well (e.g. aero pads) but to see Grove sports, GN, Puma and New Balance all with virtually identical 'contemporary' pads (VKS do the same pads as well) makes you wonder who does the designing...? Do all their designers have the same idea or does the supplier/ manufacturer have a design book and the brands just pick which they want for their own line up? Can't wait to see some real design innovation in batting pads. I heard George at Stretton Fox was doing something...

Very little can be changed in the way of design unless someone wishes to go out well past the grid.

Having a look at the kingsgrove catalogue, the kookaburra pads look very retro on the inside.

I went into the East Sydney store the other day and saw an amazing Steve Smith signature V100, GN Legend and some of the GM Moguls looked great too (based on looks and pick up only).

There is a lot of ordinary gear in there but a few gems too, albeit with significant price tags.

Moguls are proving a big hit, F18 and Elite in GN are selling exceptionally as well. Kooka is a bit slow taking off this year.

GCCC actually do some decent video reviews of the new kooka, puma and GN bats and gear on YouTube. Short and succinct.

Went to the store yesterday, and the mogul picked up really really light. There was also a GN colossus that picked up insanely light for a 3lb 2 bat, compared to the 3lb 3 f18 XL that was there.

Yep, that legend looked great. 13 clean, straight grains.

Patriot is exclusive to "big" stores.

So Kooka has burst our bubble yet again... boom tish. ;)

I'm pretty sure GCCC had direct input into the design of the Patriot range and I think it's also sold at Meulemans, but not at Kingsgrove. Kooka's stickers look really good - I was a fan of last year's Midas colours in particular. I would have liked them to continue with that vintage feel with the Midas range by introducing a traditionally shaped bat. Perhaps an opportunity lost.

When I popped into GCCC a few weeks ago I noticed a whole new(?) range of fully profiled GN bats and a range of "custom" bats that have supposedly been had crafted by Stuart Kransbueler.

There were quite a few people congregated around the new Colossus, F18 and Matrix models and the budget end Elite and Ultimate custom bats. Like a few others at the shop, I liked the F18's SS's extra short handled bat. Has anyone tried it yet? Would like to know how it goes.

I don't think any of these bats (custom and new range) have oval handles, which is something of a personal requisite of mine. Still, it shows that GN are more on the ball than Kooka in regards to keeping up with bat making trends - fuller profiles and "custom" made bats seem to be making a resurgence :)

Tried a few of the new gray nicolls at the shop the other day, gee the handles feel tiny in them this year.

The kookaburras are so heavily concaved that I thought I would cut myself because the spines were so sharp

Speaking of light, I managed to snaffle a Maestro pro weighing 2lb 5oz, 40 mm edges, full shape. I love the flat face, can't decide between the mogul and this, both rippers. Best season ever for GM for me.

Aussie Kookas are disappointing again this year IMHO. Same bog-standard shape as past years. Big, round handles though which is interesting. Subsequently, they all pick up very light.

I'm pleased that I bought a UK Ignite.
