Hi,
There is an interesting discussion going on in the GN 2015 Launch thread about the sponsorship of 'lesser' players after the release of the Peter Trego Lucky 7 range.
I thought I would open I separate discussion asking you all if you have ever bought a bat because of who sponsors it? I mean over the years we have had the Ponting Kuhuna, Tendulkar MRF, Atherton Powerspot, Lara Scoop, and that's not to mention the general brand sponsorship of players.
does it really matter that much?
-
I guess I did.
Twenty Years ago...I was excited to buy a secondhand Bradman collection bat and full cover (Slazenger) for $80. Must have been a big deal to have the great man's name on my kit. I was more excited to sell it the next season for $90 and keep the bat cover that I still have.
A mate liked that collection too, because it was West Indies colours, but he didn't buy a scoop, he brought my old Bradman. Why? Because it had Bradman's name on it and he already had the kitbag, pads and keepers gloves.
I purchased another Bradman the next season, So it must be a good thing when your younger.
I can only image countless numbers of young amateurs getting bowled trying to use 3lb bats because their idol Tendulkar wielded one.

I don't think the player themselves makes a difference. I do however feel that the level of players exposure is a key factor.
For instance, I wouldn't buy the Oblivion because Cook uses it, however if I watched a day of cricket with Cooky batting all through (Those were the days...) I would see the bat repeatedly and if I liked it would investigate. If Trego is using the lucky 7 then I doubt I would see it and wouldn't know of it's existence if I wasn't a Badger?
In my opinion the players exposure is the value rather than the player themselves...
Although now I've read that back to myself the reason I'd investigate the bat would be because I'd been watching Cook use it all day?
Now I'm confused.... ??? ??? ???

A lot of people do buy bats based on who uses them though. After '05 Woowdworm went through the roof because KP and Freddie were using them....

My first bat was a "Kevin Pietersen" Woodworm Torch - so yes!
-
I loved the Torch, see the odd one on Ebay every now and again...
Just back on topic, I was in GCCC a coupleof months ago and a dad was buying his son a bat "I want the one Finch uses" ...sure enough he ended up with an NB.

Is that because they don't sell B3s?? ;)

I think kids do more than adults, i imagine a lot of child KP Pellara's have been sold
-
I bought a Newbery Excalibur after seeing Lance Cairns use one - not because I was a huge Lance Cairns fan, but because I saw the bat and thought 'wow'! Good product placement by Newbery at the time.
-
Yeah I also got a Woodworm on the basis that Freddie and KP were using them at the time. You'd have thought at the age of 19 at the time I would have known better...
-
I had a bunch of Fearnley's because all the Worcestershire lads were using them - then again living in Worcester I wasn't likely to buy anything else anyway
-
Chris Broad and his Dumcan Fearnley Magnum
Man that was the must have bat
-
I generally don't buy a bat due to who uses them lol
I regret not buying a slazenger v12 that had the best pickup of any bat I've ever felt due to the fact I thought Clarkey was a bit of a flog at the time
-
I was also a member of the "Woodworm torch we all love kevin club"
-
When at school I brought a slazenger v500 select due to Alec Stewart using one,
Then I had a woodworm wand due to big Fred using one in the 05 ashes.
There my only two but loved the slazenger 15 years old and making 92 in a school game ahhh the memories
-
Yeah I used to have all of Pontings kit not just the graphite-backed Kahuna!
-
I bought a couple of MRF Genius XLE's coz' Tendulkar had those stickers :D
-
Never, but I did buy bats based on what I saw people (Good players and the ones who would have time to chat/teach and seemed like the life of the team) using in leagues my dad used to play in. Hence my love for GN, Kooka and SG, at least in my younger years.
-
Never.
I often look through my old Wisden's from the 80's and marvel at my hero, Gower, wafting his GN's. However, I could never afford those as a kid.
It was Warsop for me. About the only thing I could afford.
-
Definitely as a kid.
Mark Waughs Slaz v800
-
Original Bubble - because the stickers were cool!
Never because of who used it.
Did always want an Alec Stewart V500 :D
-
i bought all the woodworm kit when i was younger except for the bat. it wasnt because freddie or kp were using as such but i really like the style and colour of the kit, so obviously their exposure helped
-
I was under the impression that the bat manufacturer sponsored the player...

I was under the impression that the bat manufacturer sponsored the player...
This is probably the biggest myth in cricket.
Along with the fallacy that all 'manufacturers' manufacture their own bats...
-
I perhaps didn't mean literally the bat manufacturer. The brand?
-
Any brand that releases tendulkar shape/named bat - it becomes part of my wish list ;)
Being a member of CBF we have access to better options and that is why it's only my wish list
-
Yes. Players will be sponsored by the brand.
Where they get the bats from is not really important to the likes of GM, GN etc as it is the stickers which people associate with the bat.
Laver and Wood, Millichamp, Newbery, Salix etc will all be making for international players, but the finances involved in sponsoring a pro player is not in their business models for various reasons.

Newbery will be? Newbery is itself a 'brand', rather than a true manufacturer.

i did once buy a Gray-Nicoll's Nitro carbo just because Alistair Cook had one at the time.... i did pretty well with it as well :)
-
Yes, Reebok...wayyy back in days. But never again...
-
Thinking more about it I've got a Six6 at the moment, I am a big Joe Rooooot fan.
I didn't buy it because he uses one, more because it looked good and I fancied it once I'd seen one being used!
-
I brought a GN because my dad told me they were the best... I assume he learnt that from someone else telling him they were the best. As it happens, it was a darn good bat hats still going strong today with the Jnr I have it too.
-
Bought a kookaburra kahuna because of ponting.
Bought an oblivion because of Cook. And back in the day bought an ihsan the khan because of Imran khan.
