Title: My new B3 'DW1' beast
Post by: e4sby on August 17, 2014, 06:45:16 PM
Been thinking for a while about splashing out on something 'special' from B3 after seeing plenty of crackers going out down there.

I'm good mates with Dave and know he would look after me. He told me there were a couple of ugly low density clefts and I decided to take the punt. Having seen the DW1 (I know it as something different) or 2766 I knew the profile I wanted.

I wanted a heavier bat than the Charlie French I currently use.

Streaky and B3 don't like to use the low density clefts for this kind of bat but seen as I'm a mate of Dave they made an exception. They like to use these for bats weighing 2.7/2.8.

Here are a couple of photos

It's an absolute beast - I couldn't be happier with it. Definitely not a looker but does seem to have a stiff blade and I have no doubt it will become an immense weapon even in my hands.

A few statistics

Edge size - 41mm

Spine height - 63/64mm

Toe - 23mm

Weight - 2.11.6 with GM ripple and scuff

Very very minimal concaving

Couple of photos compared with my Cf which weighs 2.10 on the nose. The B3 is literally about 10-12mm bugger all round and zero concaving compared with the CF

Very happy with the service Streaky, Dave and the rest of the B3 team. Having seen first hand, I know the amount of hard work that's put into every single one of their bats. I dread to think how many hours Streaky works.

One last comment - Dave put a photo of this on Twitter and Derbyshire's Gareth Cross contacted him trying to nab my bat!

Think that covers everything - sorry if I've babbled on too much.

Hopefully my new LV mallet comes this week so I can get this ready for Saturday.

Don't think the photos do the shear size of it any justice.

Showed a lad it yesterday and he couldn't believe what he had in his hands! He had never seen anything as big for the weight I told him. His face was a picture.

Couple of photos which might've been seen on another thread

You can see that the profile couldn't be any bigger at the spine and needed minimal taking off by hand after machining.

Great stuff again. The b3 team are churning out some impressive designs at the mo. So tempted to drive down and see what they can do for me... How much did that set you back?

Nothing wrong with that willow looks wise IMO. Outstanding piece of work. Back in the day Kippax used to do one very similar to that - wish I could remember what model they called it - we are going back 25 years or more BTW. Very similar shape, same weight ( about 2-12) and huuuuuge. Thanks for sharing with us. :D :D :D

That's the same weight as my current match bat, but mine has nowhere near as much wood as that!
Seriously nice piece of willow you've got there mate, and the perfect number of grains!  :)

Dave - does B3 put any linseed oil or bat wax during final preparation process?

Yes we do mate just after sanding before polishing mate

Dave, so would you recommend applying another coat of oil (tiny bit may be?) before starting to knock it in?

I don't mate but that's me up to you really if you play in hot conditions it wouldn't hurt mate

Surely the other point about linseed oil is that apart from being a sealant,  it also makes it easier for the fibres in the Wood to be compressed together during knocking in,  shortening the process?

Thats micro Tim but a point.
Depends what mallett you use i guess it like a lignum and a standard.

The coat of oil is for sealant.

How many people over oil bats is more of a issue i find and some returns with the bat looking like it has been sunbathing.

Just a quick update....

Bat is pretty much knocked in, done around 2 hours, one hour of that with my new beast of a mallet.

Looking at the forecast tomorrow it's going to be dry so my DW1 will be getting a run out. Just hope I manage to stay in a few overs to get used to the extra weight and maybe middle a few.

Update 2......

Used the bat yesterday, only word I can use is WOW! Best bat I've used in my life bar none!

First time I was taking guard I looked down and felt more confident with the extra meat the bat has.

Took me a few overs to get used to the slightly extra weight. Creamed a cover drive which my skipper stood umpiring couldn't believe how well it went.

A very forgiving shape with plenty of mass in the striking area, even goes decent off the toe.

I'm gutted there is only 2 weeks of the season left!

Is that why?
I hate  it when that happens! Get a brilliant bat but it's just too heavy to play the cross bat shots fast enough making it unusable on all but the flattest of decks. A dead weight of 2.10 is my max. That bat looks immense.

Probably was a bit ambitious with the weight and doesn't help I've got a problem with my wrist that makes it very difficult for me to use anything over 2.9 really.

It really is an immense bat
