Some interesting points made by Beefy on the IPL and how it should be scrapped.
Can see his point of view, but there's no way such a lucrative tournament will be scrapped.
Thoughts??
-
its an indian tournament so they will do what they want.
i agree he has some valid points though
-
Scrap it.
However money talks and it'll stay :(
-
Its a circus, a rich man's middle stump-waving contest. Nothing more.
-
I completely agree with Sir Beef.
-
Wierd to think that such intelligent and well argued content could come from the asinine bloke who commentates for Sky...
-
'To kill the serpent, you must cut off its head.'
I think beefy should concentrate on the problems caused by his own snake...
;)
-
I do enjoy watching the IPL but Sir Ian definitely has some good points there.

It was written by Sangakkara ;)

sad thing is, it could have been. why can't that bloke appear on Sky all the time?

No offense to Beefy, but he speech made no sense. Even though I don't like IPL that much, Its good in a way that apart from the National Team of India, so many other local cricketers are making money playing cricket (Doesn't matter what kind of cricket). No one forced any board to send their best man out there to the tournament. In fact when IPL started, most of the international star players were retired from international cricket.
As far as betting goes, killing IPL doesn't solve the issue. How come he just talks about IPL, not Big bash and other T 20 tournaments? those are some lame comments from Ian.
-
Why scrape it, if he is so bothered about the game why not talk about getting the boards involved more with IPL and tighten on corruption, fixing etc.
He seems to have some personal "Beef" with IPL, probably wishing it was around when he was playing or may be because he is not signed up as a coach/mentor etc.
The game will evolve, you cannot just scrape everything which you are not happy with it. There is evidence of fixing and betting in English County games and other leagues. Scrape them too.
Used to think he talks sense, not anymore. What's next...scrap FIFA, F1.

But the level of illegal betting across the IPL runs into billions of dollars - and when you hear players making light hearted comments about it in press conferences, you realise how deep it runs and how much in the pockets they are of the owners.
Money talks, which is fine, the players are valuable commodities, but if they're turning a blind eye to it, they may as well be in the pockets of the illegal bookies. I'll use a well-worn quote again - all it takes for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.

I agree with your points, the same can be said for most major sports tournaments, and would it be ok if the betting didn't run in those high numbers? Is Beefy doing anything to expose or rectify the situation.
I am not defending IPL or illegal betting, IPL should not be singled out.
IPL is now too big for Beefy and sorts.
People have got it inherently wrong.....IPL is not the evil, illegal betting, corruption and match fixing is!!!!

And the structures around IPL that allow it to prosper also need to be singled out....

I absolutely agree, don't get me wrong, £1/$1 in match fixing is too much and the IPL has become a victim of its own success - its so high profile that illegal betting on it has gone through the roof, into the stratosphere - the amounts involved are mind-boggling. I guess my concern is the flippancy attached to it by some of the owners/administrators/players (and I include Dhoni in that) - whether they mean to or not, they are trivialising the issue when, in my opinion, they should be speaking out in the strongest possible terms. That was the reason for the quote.
Beefy isn't doing anything about it, aside from speaking out about it. He's always been saying the ICC are too lightweight and don't make decisions - he'll probably pass it on to them as their issue to solve. I agree he could do more, but at least people are talking about it again.
I do agree with your points.

Absolutely, doesn't matter how big, famous, rich those structures are.

Arrests have been made, we are yet to see a big big name being brought to justice but at least someone somewhere is doing something about it.

from Betting Perspective, its not just IPL, all the major sports are rigged in to it. As per beefy, could you banish EPL(Football), F1 and so on???
From a Indian perspective, IPL is paying good amount of money to small local cricketers which they can only dream of. Also India has huge population and Imagine the number of lads take cricket as profession either has to be really lucky & brilliant to be in the squad or just give up at a point of time as it won't provide living for them by itself. From this point of view IPL is great. But again there are Other sides to it which doesn't make it real good. so there needs to be balance created between the formats of the sport.
