They will weigh different amounts because they are shaped by the bat maker and because of Natural variations, bu 4oz seems a lot

Really?? 4oz isn't a lot all things considered.
Take a thin round handle (e.g spartan) vs a thick oval (e.g chase) and 4oz suddenly seems insignificant.
And wouldn't a heavier handle aid pickup anyway.

Could easily vary by 4oz

I hear that it's 3 ounces variation from GM, and I think that's assuming they're all at the same moisture content.

Ive heard from a number of places that it varies by 4 ounces, but does anyone know how much they actually weigh? 7-11 oz? 6-10 oz? anyone?

Weights depend in the size of the handles. Different sources turn the handles to different sizes and slightly different lengths. Most handles I have are around 14oz prior to cutting. This can vary 3+ oz.

cheers, does cane vary in density or moisture content? or is it just how many pieces the handle has and how many inserts and the thickness of the handle that determine the weight?

I've never tested the moisture of a handle. I imagine, like all natural products, there will be a slight variation in the cane

When they say a heavy handle do they mean a thick handle? i've heard that rubber inserts make the handle an ounce heavier, so does that mean that they're talking about variation in moisture content and whether or not it has rubber or cork inserts, and whether its a 4 piece handle and stuff like that?

No, it's about the density of the cane. Sarawak Cane can vary in density significantly and thus, two 12 piece handles of similar size may have significantly different weights.

Im sure that you can check the moisture content of the handle, you can check for the rest of the blade, so dont see any particular reason why you couldnt get a reading off the handle, lol. how much do pre cut handles usually weigh by the way? and how much does the binding usually weigh?
