Seems a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water to me, but it throws up some interesting discussion.
1. David Sales - if this is the end for Jumble, the county game will miss him. A class player, its ridiculous that he didn't play for England but Aftab Habib did.
2. Richard Levi going down the Kolpak route?
3. How feasible is it for smaller counties to compete at the top level now?
-
Completely agree with Sales. I put it in a post the other day of big losses to the game from this season. Many will focus on the likes of Kallis, etc but people like Sales were absolute class. He will be missed in the county game and should have played for the full England team.
-
Those players are past their sell by date. They had a difficult season. Not 'toys out of pram' at all!
The ECB should ensure all counties can compete. The salary cap is a good thing, obviously.
-
reading the approach in the press release, a lot seems sensible.
for their sake I hope they make a better fist of it than the team I support (Surrey)...
-
I'd rather see northants take on local blood rather than pay over the odds for average county players. As soon as ey get to greedy, sack them and start again. You won't win anything but they aren't anyway so might as well breed their own. They'll soon get a good reputation for giving youth a chance etc
-
Richard Levi is a right douche if he opts to sign a Kolpak deal.

Why? He's not going to play test cricket for SA so might get more ££ playing county cricket

He's capped 13 times by South Africa. Whilst Test selection is some way off. He's not too far away from the ODI;T20 sides. That aside he's got a pretty decent FC record(shade under 40), so a couple of solid seasons for Cape Town and he could bag a Test cap. He's only 26.

The Ryan McLaren route.

Willey very intent on leaving Northants to go to surrey as well.

I thought that rumour was dead? He's been made vice-captain at Northants next year.

there's a rumour going around Headingley that Yorkshire are in advanced talks with the lad too.
-
If Willey leaves then that'd be a huge blow. Who does this leave them with?!
-
Gemaal Hussain is playing in the current game. But not bowling!

Must be desperate to sign an umpire!
-
Rossington and Cobb... Hardly players who will come in and improve the standard of Northants cricket from the get-go.
"Develop young, locally-grown players..." - I know for a fact a couple of Berkshire CCC youngsters have been signed up for Northants but will be a few seasons before you see any of those.
Some dark years for Northants ahead I reckon!

If they lose but develop LOCAL young players then people will not mind doing badly. If they just sign journeyman avg players then it's a waste.

Rossington and Cobb...
I am excited by the signing of Rossington.
-
Played against Rosso quite a bit and know the lad. Quality player, hits a huge ball, Midds only let him go because Eskinazi was scoring runs for fun in our 2s, I think Rosso will score bucket loads for Northants, and not expensive - him and Cobb are exciting white ball signings.
-
Really? Didn't really challenge Simpson at Middlesex but a bit of game time may transform him.
-
Just quietly Simmo is on a fair whack, and Rosso was never fit enough, an aspect of the game that Midds are trying now to take very very seriously. His face just didn't fit I don't think - they don't value white ball cricket anywhere near as highly enough as they should, and they pigeonholed Rossington into that role which I think he wants to break free of, hence the benefit to both sides

Yeah - its a difficult one for keepers. An old mate of mine at Hampshire called Tom Burrows was a really good keeper but Nic Pothas's batting was the key to him being the 1st choice. He ended up retiring. Though to be fair to Tom, he is now a Lawyer at the age of 29 and probably earns more than he would from a county cricket career.
Chris - do you train with a lad called Jamie O'Dell at Middx?
-
Yes I know j. Massive boy and can bowl at decent licks when he tries. Heard he yipped up though? really nice lad tbf

I am the head of cricket at Jamie's old school.
Yeah - he's a lovely lad. I wondered why he hasn't been playing for the 2s. That would explain alot.
And yes, he can bowl some serious speeds for a 18-year old baby giraffe!

Lucky lad.....I remember when I was a baby giraffe. Been a while mind!

Lucky lad...
Not if he's got the yips!

Fair point but at 18 he has time to turn that around. I wish I could wind back the clock as I'm sure we all do
-
I genuinely
think hope 'yips' may well be 'growth' issues.
Just to set the scene, the kid is 6ft7 and 15st at the age of 18.
Hopefully it is just a case that he has grown too quickly and his bio-mechanics need to readjust.

Some people never turn the yips around.
