Title: The next test captain of each country...
Post by: 19reading87 on September 23, 2014, 08:40:11 PM
Been having a think about who will replace Michael Clark when he eventually retires from test matches got me thinking who do you all think will be the next test captain of each country...

I have had a go in my opinion who I think it might be, obviously all our opinions will not be the same.

South Africa - Dean Elgar
Australia - Steve Smith
England - Joe Root
Sri Lanka - Hard one as I can see Angelo Matthews there for a long time
India   - Virat Kohli
Pakistan - Asad Shafiq or Azhar Ali
New Zealand - Kane Williamson
West Indies - Kraigg Brathwate
Zimbabwe   -
Bangladesh -

I've left blank the countries I am struggling with.

Agree with most over there, while few interesting ones.

For Australia, I would rather have David Warner who has that aggressiveness.

For West Indies, I'm unsure of Kraigg Brathwate, instead I think that Darren Bravo might be a better pick.

Bangladesh, Mominul Haque?

Pujara is a decent shout but India are always guilty of choosing players on popularity even if that doesn't make them the best captain... Take Tendulkar for example

Don't agree on Faf, he will be to old. Amla will be captain for the next few years

I went with Brathwate purely on the fact he's younger and (pending on form), Ramdin will be doing it for a a good while

Well, given Pup's dicky back, Brad Haddin might be the next Aus skipper!

Kohli would be my India pick for same reason as above.

Gawd knows about Pakistan / Sri Lanka

Darren bravo is too inconsistent, I'd say Dwayne more likely to make a comeback.

Steve Smith seems to be in the same mould that Clarke had been in past years, and has experience in captaining the NSW side. He'd be my first bet for next skipper, like many others I presume! England's next captain is pretty much nailed on as Root. Is there really anybody else? If Cook goes for as long as the ECB would like it has to be him, if not then I'm sure they'd just hand it over to Broad  :-[

Braithwaite is definitely a better option, as he is currently the captain of the Barbados national team. However, Kirk Edwards is probably seen as the next replacement to Ramdin, as he is currently the vice captain of the WI team. But I personally feels he may not be in the squad for much longer.

Agree on Amla, would love to see Dale Steyn lead the side.

Pujara hasn't been around long enough to be considered for the role of skipper. He needs to perform and cement his place first and focus on his batting and fielding.

Tendulkar was chosen as a leader by default, Indian team was struggling to fill in the captain's shoes and he happened to be the most experienced one around.

Kohli and Raina have shown promise.

As good a player Root is, I don't get it why people think he will be a good skipper?

I actually think Root will be a better captain than player...

Pakistan: Hafeez ( Although not currently in the test team but he will make a come back and the best man for the job )
Australia: Watson
India: Kohli
S.A: Dean Elgar ( All the major contenders are in the 30's group so maybe Elgar )
England: Root
NZ: Williamson
SL: Thirimanne
W.I: Darren Bravo
Bangladesh: Anamul Haque
Zimbabwe: Sikander Raza Butt

Heaven help us if Watson gets a run as captain of Australia,  too much baggage on past actions and behaviours.
I even question Clarke as captain, wish I could find Ian Chappells recent comments.
Australia has a lot of potential at the moment and some great bowling stock if they can keep healthy, not so sure on leadership?

Except NZ (Kane Williamson), finding a young (< 28 yrs old) test captain for rest of the cricketing nations will be a tough task because the potential replacements have not led a team in the longer format of the game or have a decent record with bat or ball or even picked in the test side consistently,
Kohli, Steve Smith and Root do have the potential, some leadership experience and age in their favor but rest of them, I dont know.....

Hafeez's best days are behind him as a batsman.

Root should focus on his batting, I think he has the potential to outscore some of the best in the history of cricket. Fiery Ben Stokes would make a great captain.

Quinton DC for SA after Amla/ABD/Faf era.

Finch for AUS ?
