Title: £100 Challenge - The Stash Topic
Post by: tim2000s on September 25, 2014, 07:34:43 AM
As we've a few people participating in the £100 Challenge, I've started this topic for people to stick the details, photos and videos (maybe) of their stash up on the Forum.

My buying so far has the following:

Helmet (brand new)
Box (brand new);
Thigh Pads (brand new);
Two Bats (used);
Two Bags (one used, one brand new);
Two Sets of Pads (one used, one brand new);
Two sets of Gloves (one used, one brand new).

My expenditure to get to this? £87.95 so there's a little bit more cash there should I choose to want to purchase anymore stuff for charity.

I'll reveal details and photos once everything is assembled.

Managed to get the following so far

Pads £28
Gloves £12
Thigh, arm, chest pad £3.50

Leaves £56.50 but struggling with a bat in weight range (remember kit needs to be inline with what you normally use) but hopefully a forum member is going to arrange a bargain for me.

Yea in hindsight it is but they are £100 pads so hopefully judges will see the quality in kit.

Bag is sorted

Don't always wear a lid so may need to scrimp a very cheap one.

How are those duffles?  I was watching them?  Look decent for under a tenner but what's the quality like?

So, a few pictures of the £100 stash...

This is what you get if you pay £25 for a Random Bag of Kit off  of the internet...

It is basically an old set of Excalibur pads and gloves, a pair of GN Sabre shoes, a bat mallet of the ball on the stick variety and an old Duncan Fearnley bat of a type that I've not seen before.

The pads are actually in okay condition and offer decent protection. I wouldn't want to wear the gloves in a match though. They really don't offer a lot and would be very painful to experience a ball hitting them. The bat, while not looking like much, actually rebounds very well when a ball is bounced off it. It weighs in at a very light  2lb 7oz.

It's not a fabulous set of kit, but it is usable, and is testament to what you can get without having to look too hard.

And here's the fee paid. £25 for the kit and bag and £12 delivery.

Hey Tim, very well done mate an excellent bit of kit and eBay hunting there mate. Remember those pads as they were the first set I ever owned from memory.

Bat I reckon would be lovely if sanded and cleaned up mate, so is this you entry or do you have two entries?

Post by: tim2000s on October 04, 2014, 08:31:06 PM
And then, what can you get for as little as you possibly can but still have a decent set of kit. This time, I went for new kit, (with the exception of the bat) and tried to spend as little as possible.

The bill of materials reads as follows:

Pads and gloves by Passion (www.essentials99.com (http://www.essentials99.com)) - £15: these were incredibly cheap, and actually seem to be of decent quality. They are Pakistan made and apparently have cane and HDF filling in the pads and Kapok filling in the gloves. Putting them on and beating them with the ball on the stick from the other set, I'd suggest that these have decent protection. The gloves, while not making Puma shiver in fright are perfectly acceptable for a decent level of club cricket and I wouldn't be unhappy wearing them. For fifteen quid, I'd say that you can't go wrong. They are actually a decent product at a great price.

CA Padman Shorts including Inner and Outer thigh pad and box - £14.98: all in one for box, thighpad and inner thigh pad. Came from Task Sports who seem to provide a lot of cheap Pakistani imports. It would do a job, but nowhere near as protective as Strettons or Aero Strippers. Very much club cricket protection.

Ihsan Inferno 950 helmet (which looks a lot like an Albion Club to me) - £9.99: Surprised me by fitting pretty well, I think this is a cheap Albion that, while not feeling quite as protective as some of the other Albion, Masuri or Ayrtek shells, would suffice and should stop serious harm coming to you.

Duffle bag by Joshila - £10: A cheap duffel, I think it would probably last a season, and there are no bells and whistles. Put kit in and carry it.

Kookaburra Rogue 200 from eBay - £22.50: A 2012 Rogue 200 with a face sheet. I love the sticker on the side saying "Unbleached willow" when you can't see the face. The bat seems to rebound decently. I'd say it is properly knocked in. It could do with a bit of a clean up, but I don't think there's anything at all wrong with this, and it's got a couple of good seasons left in it.

The pictures of the kit are below:

(http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr293/tim2000s/D7K_4241_zpsc8286883.jpg)
One we've seen before...

And here's the kit:

(http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr293/tim2000s/D7K_4242_zps28694bd8.jpg)

(http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr293/tim2000s/D7K_4243_zpsbc9a6666.jpg)

(http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr293/tim2000s/D7K_4246_zps30eb0f48.jpg)

The total bill for this comes to £62.50 as mentioned previously. Once postage is included (£18.39), the bill for this lot is £80.89, postage included. Suitably under the £100 limit.

Right guys so got my £100 challenge Kit together now and very pleased with the quality of the kit that I managed to get, mostly sourced through forum members or sponsors.

Right so bag and bat came from Jake at Vitas. I had been searching eBay for ages and just couldn't find anything that I would normally use in my weight range of 2.8/9 so I reached out to Jake and asked for help. Lucky for me he was refurbing this SF bat that was used as a test bat when Vitas stocked SF kit last season or season before. 2.9 and refurbed and knocked in so brilliant for me. Refurb is top quality well finished and ping is superb to be honest.  Duffle is just that a basic duffle. This cost £50 plus postage.

Softs are from reading1982 and were in the sale section at the start of this thread. Kook players pads RH and 900 RH gloves. Well happy with these as top end softs and lots if people seem to think kahuna players softs are the dogs dangles, basically top end softs from top company and in amazing condition. Pads £28 and gloves £12 including postage.

The protection is a thigh guard, chest guard and arm guard. From eBay and cost £3.20 plus small postage cost.

So all this for £93.20

this is most of my stash. all the kit i have bought i have planned on using next year during the season

i really like the bat. was planning on using it next year for nets but not sure as i already had a pair of nemesis' which i will be using. cost £36

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af2/jwebber86/IMG_20141013_170406320_zps0mo7m7kg.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/jwebber86/media/IMG_20141013_170406320_zps0mo7m7kg.jpg.html)

the gloves are woodworm performance bought as second hand but never used. i really like them as good as any glove i have used until i got some salix this season will be going in my lms duffle. cost £10 total £46

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af2/jwebber86/glove_zps163d29c1.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/jwebber86/media/glove_zps163d29c1.jpg.html)

i got a pair of adidas adipower pads they are more used then i was expecting and the is a small rip on the seam at the bottom of the knee roll. nice light weight and protection seems good so definitely a nice pair. i think i will probably end up donating these to the club they were cheap so was worth a gamble. cost £3.50 total £49.50

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af2/jwebber86/pads_zpsc98cc96c.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/jwebber86/media/pads_zpsc98cc96c.jpg.html)

my thigh pad set is a kookaburra beast padman style shorts. i wanting these as an alternative to my stripper style pads just because i want the choice and would also like to clean my strippers at some point. brand new and unused for £8.99 total £58.49

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af2/jwebber86/thighpad_zpsd2af5568.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/jwebber86/media/thighpad_zpsd2af5568.jpg.html)

i have just bought a shamrock duffle off gingerbusiness for 17.50 delivered (i will claim the bag cost £1 depending on how much the helmet costs me) for now i will say £12.50 for bag and £5 p&p. total £71

i have also bought a pair of newberry tour keeping/fielding pads which i will enter as part of my stash if there is space in the budget. cost £9.50 total £82.50

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af2/jwebber86/keeppads_zpsd7ddee51.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/jwebber86/media/keeppads_zpsd7ddee51.jpg.html)

i still haven't got a helmet. im trying to find one i will use to keep wicket in so either another ayrtek or a masuri keeping helmet. i might offer to buy my dads off him for £1 and let him use it for the 4 balls he faces in a game. by my maths i have £17.50 to find a helmet

i didnt even notice the coordinated kit but now you've mentioned it, it does look nice in the pic.

i was surprised to get the bat so cheap.

my original plan was to get matching puma softs from pro direct but they had sold out when i went to order but i think it work out for the best

the only thing i dont like are the shape of the thigh pads im going to swap them for a set in my attic, although i do love the yellow colour

Really good effort with these entries, I wish I could join in, but I don't really have much space for any kit... :( Out of the entries, Soulman's kit is the one I'm leaning more towards at the moment, as it's pretty similar to mine! All depends on his lid choice though. (If it's a Shrey, you get 0 points! ;))

Shipping doesn't count! ;)

And it wasn't quite £30 because postage was split between 2 of us.

At the end of the day I only bought the brain protector and the helmet for this challenge as the rest will be my match kit for the new season, so regardless if I win or lose Rhe challenge I've not bought (too much) unnecessary kit*

*my purchase of all new gear was 100% necessary, last years fully functioning, perfect condition kit simply had to be replaced!

Just wanted to say thanks to those that took part in this. Was only put together to get all us loyal kit badgers talking and I know funds are sparse for many. Quality of all kit is really good so well done to all those that entered.

Judges over to you.

There were really good items in all 4 entrants to be fair.
All did fantastically well and in the end, it was a closely fought result!
Well done to all four!!

Well done Cam buddy well deserved mate with some great looking kit

Also Tim and Webber well done Tim in terms of value for money top marks mate. Was hoping for a few more entries but 4 people talking the time is a great effort.

Thanks Pete & Buzz for judging
Title: Re: £100 Challenge - The Stash Topic
Post by: Buzz on November 01, 2014, 10:00:18 AM
just so there is transparency on the judging...

tim had loads of kit, but neither Pete of I fancied using any of it!

we loved jwebbers fielding pads, but the adidas kit looked a little flimsy.

Chris had awesome kit which was most impressive

but so did Cameron who had more and the exercise was quality and quantity

well done you four, I will be in touch with you later on today about prizes.

Chris, thanks again for setting this up.

As a brief follow up on the £100 Challenge, I've got so fed up with everyone using my kit at LMS that the £100 Challenge stash bag is coming with me tonight (as I never made it to Croydon and Cricket for Change, and it's been sitting in the shed). The only thing not coming is the bat. Everything else will get used!

Will let you all know how it gets on!

most of my kit has now been moved on to team mates who seem to like. i even made some money out of it i think.

the bat goes really nicely even though its used my our opening bowler who can only play the mow over cow corner.
