Title: Knee pads
Post by: TangoWhiskey on October 23, 2014, 08:55:13 AM
Morning gents.

I once read that Stuart Broad has knee pads that he wears under his whites whilst fielding to protect his fragile knees. As a fellow jelly knee-er, I am very interested as to what he uses. I've been injured for the past 4 months as a result of landing on my knee and I'm sure if I had some kind of protection I would have been ok. Does anyone know what he uses?

Cheers

I'm also interested in this, my knee is bad anyway but I injured it right at hte end of the season and still haven't recovered :(   Might have to stop diving etc and wear protection, small price to pay to keep playing

Having injured my knee in the delivery stride i am thinking of  to trying these  for  fielding  Enduro Knee Pads slip on lightweight with knee padding outer panel for durability silicone gripper inside to prevent  pads slipping.

I was using a neoprene one last year which held me together well enough!

I've had dodgy knees for decades and got through a whole load of neoprene supports, some much better than others. Got my current ones from amazon (the 1st hit you get if you search for "LP 706" on the site), very reasonably priced, offer decent compression and enough protection if you're diving around. Large were perfect for me (6'2" average build). You could do much worse.

Did it playing football when I was 26 and after keyhole the specialist told me as it's a small tear they'd operate if it went on me (I'm now 35). That said had my left Achilles done 3 years ago.

I wear the brace to prevent twisting, jaring etc. Still bowl 130-200 overs a season (I only play Saturdays with the odd Sunday).

Due to getting on a bit and some wear and tear issues with my right knee cap i use Mcdavid knee pads which i find give a good combination of support and cushining. Got them from DW sports and were about £12 ish . I think there suppose to be for kick boxing??

Just to be clear, I'm looking for a knee pad to protect against impact such as when I'm diving and sliding whilst fielding. Not a knee support as most are suggesting.

Here's the problem, any such pad may offer protection but will cause you more damage in terms of restricting your knee movements. Knee damages are long [forever] lasting so be very careful about what you use. Why not work on the technique instead?
You can also try trousers with some thick material or little bit of padding around knee area, it may help.

Think long term mate and avoid diving unless you really have to. I will be super wary of using anything tied to the knees, even the neoprene stuff.

May be someone with more experience can shed a bit more light.

Same here, I was just about to say the same. It's protecting from impacts, not helping already injured knees.

Technique doesn't save the knees unfortunately, just not diving will

valid point mate, think!!!! not diving may well add a few more years. It is time to accept that not everyone will be able to do everything. Time to listen to your body fellas.

I do avoid diving if at all possible but I'm hardly going to pull out of a catch when I'm sprinting full whack because I'll be thinking about the catch, not my knees. The pads will help in those situations.

certainly, if you find something which works, I will be interested also.

I've got/had bad knees from years of football and rugby, I wear Neoprene knee supports (from boots) which also protect the knee when sliding or diving.  You can also do some strengthening to the knee, Squats done with correct technique can help injured knees. It helps me manage my knees to the point I now only wear the supports in the field for support when diving.

Yep I gathered that, however my neoprene supports have enough thickness to provide reasonable protection on hard outfields which is one of the reasons I always wear them; they're the closed knee type.  They're not restrictive at all, just get rather sweaty...

When i payed football i got all sorts of stuff thrown at me, boots and goalie gloves were the key ones obviously, but i do remember Uhlsport, who were my longest running (and best aside from Selsport in my opinion) goalie glove sponsor giving me some rather good knee pads. I never wore them in matches but they were useful during training, especially on astro. They were called Uhlsport Alligators if i remember, and are probably long defunct. I haven't played football at all for a few years, and it's probably 5 years since i last played in goal at any kind of level so my knowledge is somewhat old.

A quick browse of some popular goalie glove websites and i've found several similar products though. I would say to counter points made by others, these won't restrict your movement much, if at all, but equally just like a knee support they aren't massively thick but will certainly help when diving/sliding on a cricket pitch.

I may be sacking off diving, it saves a few runs sure but I'm not sure it's worth it :(
