Trott has been selected by the Lions for South African tour provisionally.
-
Just saw this, so much for moving on as a team....
Pleased to see Sam Billings in both squads too
-
James Taylor...?
Surely he should be getting a few lions game to prove his worth for the full team.

Says the teams are provisional so would assume they see where they lie in terms of who is going to the world cup or not before confirming. Assume James Taylor is covered by that

For the FC stuff. Unless they want to put Ballance 3.

Got to be:
3. Ballance
4. Trott
5. Vince
Surely be a bit of a backtrack to put Ballance at 5 after his exploits this summer?
And with it being SA, don't think both Riley and Rashid will play, one or the other.
Be intersting to see who keeps wicket if Billings and Bairstow both play. I'd rather Billings, he looks like a real natural, and his keeping style reminds me of James Foster, in as much as he's all about the loose hands, which can't be a bad thing.
-
I'd have thought they'd give them both a try if both in.
Rashid will probably be fighting for the last batting spot with Billings from the looks of things.
-
We may see Trott opening which would be instructive.

That's a point actually, didn't consider that at first. Surpised to see Trott is not in the one day squad squad for it though?
Small problem in the OD squad of 4 of the 7 batsman being openers :D.

Boyd Rankin? really
-
bizzare selection of boyd rankin,I wonder what the selectors could be thinking
England obviously want Trotty back in, i'm not convinced he should be back in myself but Robson was unconvincing this summer
Ballance and Root have come on really well for England, maybe we are looking at Trott to open in the future so not to move Ballance from number 3?
-
dont think Robson is quite ready for englands senior side yet. If can get trott back to his best and in the right frame of mind I dont see why he couldnt open. Rankin is a waste of time, not sure why they persist with him, stats dont back up his selection either

I wonder the opposite - Ballance might move up to open if Trott does return. He has the game to be more expansive and counterbalance Captain Plod
-
Delighted for Trott. Hope he can have a successful tour and put his hat back in the ring for selection to the WI. I think he will have to score a lot of runs to be considered with how well Ballance did in the summer though. As mentioned above I think his best chance of getting back in may be as an opener but I reckon Lyth deserves a shot at that gig after the summer he had.
-
I would very much agree with you there Busta, i'm pleased for Trott and hope he fully recovers, but there are other players knocking on the door for selection,as has been mentioned many times on this forum.
Once you give up your place-for whatever reason-someone always steps in.....
There's no KP, and it's often been said Trott and Cook(plod!) don't get the scoreboard moving-but look at their records for England...
I guess a lot will depend on whether Moeen Ali fits into the test matches in WI and against the Aussies...I think he will
In which case Trott may still miss out.I would be hard on Lyth not to get first chance opening-and his Yorkshire partner is useful too
Tricky selection issues for England coming up :)

Personally I'm really pleased for Trott and as an England fan I really hope he is back in the England set up and hope to see him back in the full set up as personally I think he is a class bat. Also as a No 3 bat there is no reason why he can't open plus he is proven like Cook to be able to bat long and has scored runs against all attacks and plays quick bowling (Johnson in Aus the exception) very well.
Also really pleased to see Billings in the set up and with England's keeping spot open, well for me it is as I'm not a Butler fan in terms if test cricket. Can he make the step up well that's to be seen but Bairstow has had a few chances although I accept sporadic and never had a decent run his batting has never filled me with confidence.
Riley I really don't think is international quality albeit he had a great season just gone but as a Kent fan really pleased to see a couple of Kent players back in the England set up. At least if he does play I can say I scored a 50 against a test bowler even though I was 19 when I played against him and he was a teenager lol.

It really pisses me off when the media talk about mental health issues. Its either 'mental health issue', or in this case its 'stress related illness'. You never see sportsmen with 'broken legs' do you? Its a stress related illness, just as much as its a broken leg!

Think Billings needs a good season in FC cricket before he's considered for the test team. Bairstow is currently miles ahead in my opinion. When you see someone who's only had would you'd call a good season in one format it's a bit worrying about whether they can pull it off in all of them or whether it was just a short spike in form. Hopefully he can prove that it wasn't next season/on the lions tour.
