Title: Any clubs have Wordpress websites?
Post by: jamesisapayne on November 05, 2014, 02:58:52 PM
I'm a web developer with a fair bit of Wordpress experience and had a bit of an idea about writing a cricket-specific plugin - but before I do I wanted to gauge if many people use Wordpress for their own club websites. I'm not talking about play-cricket type affairs but actually running your own site on your own domain.

This is just preliminary research and I know this is a narrow section of the market, but I just wanted to get a feel for it.

Thanks,

James

Yep. Me. Sort of. It's set up, trying to get people contributing.

What's your idea? [emoji2]

My previous club didnt see the point of a website as Play Cricket pretty much had all of the functionality they wanted. Still think there is a market for clubs who would want their own website

I use pitchero for one of my clubs, pretty good but the functionality isn't straightforward

I think play-cricket is (or was) a great database, but that was it.  Not very user friendly for visitors who didn't know their way round it.

With a website, you want to be reaching out to non-members for fundraising, pitch/clubhouse hire, etc.

in my professional opinion it's a complete mess and looks like it's been designed by a programmer with zero idea about interfaces!

My job is a web developer for the local government and our site is all on wordpress. I rate it highly. I reckon it would be excellent for a cricket website

Thanks Reds. Didn't know you were a web developer - how long have you been doing that for?

I'm thinking along the lines of a scorebook plugin that will produce averages and all that malarkey.

I run my clubs website through Wordpress too, and a few others sites, rate it very highly.

Been on the lookout for any cricket specific type plugins for a while

I built our uni cricket club page on Wordpress a couple of years ago, worked well as it's pretty simple to use so could hand it over to people with no web expertise without any problems. Added cricket plugins would be superb for it, would have used any for sure.

I use a hitssports based one for ours. It does a job but it is very basic.

I run a cricket based wordpress site, works quite well but if there was a plugin that enabled you to pull results through from playcricket I would be eternally grateful ! : )

Being a Web Developer myself, I've often thought about writing a plugin / addon which pulls information out of Play Cricket (given that it's the most commonly used place which leagues hold stats) and giving it to users in a user friendly way.

I've even contacted Play Cricket to see if they have an API (which they do) so I might eventually end up doing something similar.

I've thought about the API route before but one of my issues with play cricket is there seems to be a lot of data missing, and the stuff that's there lacks any proper consistency. I've seen some clubs with 4 versions of the same person, just spelt differently. I know that's down to human error but their should be some sort of wildcard match to see if the user already exists when adding new players.

Totally agree, however I'd probably see that as a failing with the Play Cricket system, rather than the user.

Unfortunately, Play-Cricket seem to have a monopoly on club cricket stats and most leagues (certainly the ones in my area) actually specify that you use them to store results. For example, our junior side are required to use a tablet to score matches and they do so via the CricHQ app / Total Cricket Scorer, and they download the fixtures from Play-Cricket.

When it works it's a fantastic bit of kit, but it can go wrong so very easily. Again.... we have a Pitch Hero site which links into Play-Cricket, but even for something as simple as displaying the league table, some teams appear twice (again, the fault of Play Cricket).

In an ideal world, a Play Cricket competitor would appear, and the ECB / MCC would endorse that instead.

That would also work!  :D

Often thought how great it would be to combine my two passions. Sadly, I think Play-Cricket is too far down the line to save!

The data is there it just needs moving to something that works and a mobile app would be great

LOL it's not always human error. Put yourself down as A when you've got 50 or 5 wickets but B or C when you just been hit around the park then got a first baller.
