I have been meaning to take on this bat, which was a mates. My plan is to cram as much glue as possible in it, clamp it and then use either some twine or fibre tape to hold it together.
Any other advice to salvage this carbon handle Puma?

Honest opinion that probably dead bud.
What i'd do is glue, clamp and probably put a couple of dowels in there as I love a good bat resurrection and enjoy fixing them more than using them! :D

It's more of project to test my skills more than anything else. If it can be used afterwards, then bobs your uncle. Would be a shame not to be able to use the carbon handle.

Yeah that bat is dead that happened to my ballistic 5000. If you really want to fix it glue would be the way to go

Glue it up and use it as a net/indoors bat. Gonna go away for sure in the match :)

The best thing to do with this bat is use a flat object, like a screwdriver perhaps and open the break up as much as you can. This will ensure you can get as much glue into the bat as possible. Clamp the bat from both sides and the top to ensure that the glue binds from all angles. For a big break, I usually give the bat 2-3 days in the clamp just to ensure it is 100% solid. To re-enforce the break, I would insert some hard wood dowel (6mm) into the edge, approximately 2cm apart. I would then use a drawknife to scrape away the excess dried glue and coarse sand the area. Finish with the bat repair tape and give the bat a go.

In my experience, which is fairly limited, a front to back split is often terminal. However, I agree, open on the crack as much as possible to get glue in. If you know a nurse/doctor/intravenous drug addict, I suggest you use a syringe and needle to get glue as high into the split as possible. Use a PVA glue as others are too brittle once set. I use sash clamps though a vice would be good too and leave to set for 24 hrs. Dowel with fluted dowels as these allow glue to surround the dowel and give better adhesion. Once set rub down and leave for another few days before you apply linseed oil. Leave another few days then tape up. Good luck.

I use bamboo thick chopsticks instead of Dowel they are more flexable.

Doesn't that mean they won't add the same rigidity to the repair?
I thought the idea was to put something solid through the repair to re-enforce the join, so you wouldn't want anything too flexible?
I may be wrong, I've pretty much taught myself woodwork and repairs so the chances I'm barking up the wrong tree are rather high!

it works for me, woods a natural material that moves and flexes a little I find a lot of Dowel just cracks because its too rigid

I think the bamboo skewers are a good idea. Anything too stiff only encourages more cracking. PVA allows some flexibility and the bamboo should flex with the glue better than dowels. If you wanted a stiff repair you would put in 3 inch screws and plug the screw heads. Through experience I can this can cause the bat to fracture in spectacular style.

Difference being dowels are made of wood so it's a legal repair, 3 inch screws cannot be used for a legal repair (nor can staples now I think of it, but that didn't stop me... :-[)

From experience of repairing cracks like that do as you have said but if you intend to use the bat do as suggested and fit dowels as IMO glue etc won' t hold.the that crack together.

After gluing, I would suggest binding the toe with twine, for extra protection.
