Sand it round, glue the top bit if cracking and tape it up.

Square off the area where the piece is missing using a sharp chisel. Chisel across the grain first. Flatten off the bottom of the repair with a chisel. Basically make it a perfect rectangle (quite easy in a soft timber like willow).
Find an old bat with a similar grain structure and cut off a piece slightly larger than the missing piece. Glue on, clamp and leave for a day. Remove clamps and sand flush. Wait a few days oil and tape up.
I had a similar repair to do on an old GN. It's still going strong. If you have a few basic tools, a little skill and some patience it is quite easy. I saw this bat myself but I find SS handles too small and I don't like adding more grips. Should be a good buy.

As tempting as your offer it it will probably end up on eBay the rate you go through bats haha!
(And thats probably where it'd end up if I bought it anyway...)

It it was just a crack I wouldn't have asked, I'd have already been drafting my "you won't believe what I got for £35" thread haha

Just water it once a week - it will grow right back.

I missed it anyway, someone else will have the joy of watering their new bat now!

Sand the area where it's broken till it blends in to the missing bit then glue with undiluted PVA and  wrap with
One inch wide fibreglass tape when dry.

Evening all,

I was a little cheeky with this. When I saw Cam didn't buy it, I put in a cheeky bid and it was accepted.

I have completed what I consider to be a 'reasonable' refurbishment for me. Unfortunately, I did not have any matching willow, only some from a semi-new broken bat which I could use some G1 willow from.

Has been fixed, sanded, polished, oiled, restickered, shoe goo'ed, helicopter sheeted and taped! It should definitely last!

Was fun to do - looking for the next one now... Enjoy!

Looks like a pretty good job mate.  What wood did you use for the dowels you've put through?

Looks a tidy job mate, glad you got it as its in a good home now!

Have to say I'm surprised how deep the missing chunk was, I didn't think it was that bad from the eBay pictures!

Yeah - it was pretty soft underneath but all good and solid now! :)

I thought it was a bargain bat and it is always a good feeling to put a good bit of willow back n the circuit. How does it knock up/feel? You can test the solidity of the repair if you tap a piece of metal over the bat. Hopefully the sound is consistent over all of the bat and no hollow sound over the repair.
Personally I would have used bamboo skewers, someone on here gave that suggestion, I think it is a winner.

Nice one.  Approximately how far do the dowels go into the bat?

Sounds absolutely fine mate. Very solid repair.

I take my time on these things to make sure they are right. No one wants a screwed bat!

Quite deep.  I wanted it as secure as possible.

That'd probably get a similar response to my stapled bat haha  ;)

Now you have done this, how would you repair a bat with a 3" front to back split?

A front to back split is pretty terminal though Cam.

Glue and dowel it anyway!
As you've said it's pretty terminal, so other than glue, dowels and time you've got nothing to lose by giving it a go!
Some sad muppets like me love repairing bats just for the sake of doing it!
