Title: Developing Hand Speed For Batsmen
Post by: InternalTraining on November 24, 2014, 02:12:17 PM
I was reading James Taylor's interview in cricinfo and he mentioned three things that help him hit big: 1. Strong positions; 2. Hip rotation power; 3. Hand speed.

Some batsmen have terrific hand speed. Devillier's is one of them. McCullum is another. And obviously James Taylor.

What are your thoughts on developing hand speed? What are some of the drills that have worked for you?

This is too easy!
You can improve your bottom hand speed quite simply by "self pleasure"!
Might not be as co-ordinated using your other hand though....

Now I've got that obvious comment out the way anyone with a serious suggestion please come forward...

LOL. Thanks for your contribution. I am sure you have had a lot of experience with this  :D I hope the three great batsmen, ones I mentioned above, have not used a similar program to increase their hand speed. :D [edited Siri's typos]

With speed of hand speed and hip rotation, you risk losing shape. Keeping shape is far more important I would think. I can move my hands fairly quickly but it doesn't always help me hit the shots properly.

I am also not too sure hip rotation, you really don't want to rotate too quick and risk injury.

My coach stressed that I should lead with the left shoulder [right shoulder from those who use wrong hand], hips etc. should just follow.

I would suggest focus on hitting cleanly through the line and keeping shape.

Ah, The Palmist!

With a name like that I'd expect you to be an authority on hand speed...

The hip rotation comes from an improved model for hitting mechanics, think Baseball and Golf.

Lot of times when you're hitting square of the wicket,  you tend to use your hand speed a lot. Finch, ABD, Warner, and McCullum snap their hands ( and naturally the bat follows) to play these strokes.

one thing i discovered by accident...your bat speed increases automatically, if your back toe turns to point straight down the pitch. for hand speed, i suggest maxim, and playboy.

Here is Strauss discussing hand speed:

Now, anyone knows good drills? By that I mean something better than underarms.
