Title: How I added weight to my mallet
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on December 16, 2014, 08:19:05 PM
Evening all

Following on from an earlier thread, here's how I added weight to my mallet.

I drilled holes and added lead fishing weights, will see if this lasts or if I wasted my fishing weights!

I started off making a hole for my lead fishing weights to go in.

This resulted in a lot of smoke and not a lot of progress...

Finally got a hole in there

And added a 3oz lead weight.
I tested it fit first

Then stuck in there with shoe goo

And wiped away the excess goo

As it went too smoothly I added an extra 1oz underneath
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/9E54ABCE-B3CF-4E13-91B8-794551F6E00B_zpsnmtaki9e.jpg) (http://s1206.photobucket.com/user/CPye061194/media/9E54ABCE-B3CF-4E13-91B8-794551F6E00B_zpsnmtaki9e.jpg.html)

Which cracked the mallet, so I added a dowel

Finally I covered my mess with some tape!

At the end of all that the mallet is 497g, whick is still 138g lighter than my mallet/cone combo. D'oh!

I use the  standard light mallet and it regularly cracks my new bats. My recent Red Ink has many cracks on the bat face. Am I hitting too hard or do I need a mallet with a larger head for an even contact?

Do you oil to bat first?

Could be knocking too soon after oiling.
Could be hitting too hard too quickly.
Could be a new mallet required.

All bats should crack.- not split
Hit the face evenly edges  at  a 45 degree angle.
Don't knock the bat in when it is wet
Don't knock the bat in when it is very dry.

^^ that's a lot of work for adding 4 oz. Knocking is a pain though irrespective of how much ever it brings one closer to his bat [emoji12]
