Title: Starting XI
Post by: KarlPennington on December 22, 2014, 06:04:08 PM
Following a conversation in work today where I was asked to pick my Starting XI for the World Cup and what I thought Morgans starting 11 might be. I came up with this. Please add your staring XI's and what you expect the starting XI to be.

Me: (1)Ballance (2)Hales (3)Taylor (4)Root (5)Morgan (6)Ali (7)Butler (8)Bopara (9)Jordan (10)Broad (11)Anderson

Morgan: (1)Hales (2)Ali (3)Taylor (4)Root (5)Bopara (6)Morgan (7)Butler (8)Woakes (9)Broad (10)Anderson (11)Treadwell

Do it for the  :D :D :D We'll see who's closest come the WC

It depends how hales goes in the big bash/tri series.

1 hales/bell
2 Ali
3 taylor
4 root
5 morgan
6 bopara
7 buttler
8 Woakes
9 broad
10 Tredwell
11  Anderson

Well, there are eight nailed on certainties:

1.
Ali
3.
Root
Bopara
Morgan
Buttler
Woakes
Broad
10.
Anderson

1. is probably going to be Hales, 3. is a straight toss between Balance and Taylor - Bell is basically the reserve batsman.  10 comes down to the pitch - for game one against Australia it'll probably be Finn, thereafter Tredders will possibly get the nod.

1 Lumb
2 Ballance
3 Trott
4 Pietersen
5 Morgan
6 Stokes
7 Kieswetter
8 Jordan
9 Meaker
10 Rankin
11 Dockrell

I'm sure you can all spot the theme, much higher chance of winning in ODIs that way! Struggled to find an alternative to Kieswetter though, any ideas? Is Wessels qualified?

No Ali, Root, Taylor or Bopara. Dropping everyone who got runs in Sri Lanka. Interesting concept.

And selecting a keeper who was withdrawn from the squad through injury.
@edge, have you sent your CV to the ECB, you seem to be perfect!   ;)

Think you've all missed his theme, a team made up entirely of Johnny Foreigner. Hence my Geraint Jones suggestion.

Lumb
Hales
Trott
KP
Root
Morgan
Woakes
Buttler
Broad
Jordan
Finn

Taylor as next batsmen, Ballance as the trott replacement.

Bowling wise, well you have anderson, gurney, tredwell to come in.

Haha I'll get the job application off straight away WW!
Jones is a decent call but he's given up keeping! Looked good for Glos this year to be fair though.

Can we recall Matt Prior?? Think he was born in South Africa.
Could make him Captain with KP as Vice  ;)

I don't know why people are moving Root, who seems to be batting well at 4 currently.

If KP wanted back in, he should fill the spare opening spot with Ali.

Ali
KP
Taylor
Root
.
.
Buttler
Broad
Rashid
Woakes
.

I'm still not convinced that Morgan, Hales or Bopara should be in.

Morgan's had a bad couple of years, Hales isn't quite living up to the hype and Bopara never really seems to get in a good run of form.

Same with the bowlers. Jordan has done well, Finn ok and I think Rashid would be as good a bet as Tredwell, and turns it the opposite way to Ali/Root.

I just think the problem is we don't have a good enough pool of players to pick from.
