Who is the best player you've played against?
-
Danny Briggs ;)
-
Carlos Remy, Sussex and Leics. so quick it was scary..then got home and googled him and it said on Cricinfo 'medium pace'.He now bowls offies in the Middlesex Championship.
Grant Flower and Alistair Campbell(Zimbabwe) both got tons against us,both retired when they got bored of batting, neither gave a chance or took any risks at all.
When some of us asked to speak to either in the bar just to get some advice on batting their Tour Manager said they were both in bed as they had a game the next day.
It was 8pm.
:)
-
Carlos played for our club about 10 years ago and played against him a few times since, a lovely guy and quality cricketer.
-
When I was a kid, my friend Sam who is not in AUS playing cricket. And in LMS recently, there is a posh team who are just silly. Walk in smash us about like they are in the nets easy peasy. One guy hit a 17 ball 50 and 3 of them hit 50 in under 25 balls. They hit 298 of 20 overs!

indeed a nice bloke, there is a west indian team in our league New Calypsonians, he plays for them now..in fact all of them are great fun,try to blast you out on the field but there is always a red stripe in the showers.
Back when Carlos was in his early twenties-when I faced him-he was real quick. I opened back then and he was miles away waiting to bowl, looked back and the keeper was even further back....
medium pace in a club match and a County game mean two very different things :)
-
James Taylor for Loughborough Town. Scored an brilliant 50 odd against us at the age of about 14. Also Saqlain Mustaq, who played for Syston. Put 6 balls on the same spot and they all moved different ways when landing, unbelievable. My dad always talks about playing against Vaughn Walsh who loved to quote "stick it up your snot box"
-
Played against Jack Brooks when he was in his teens very different now. Otherwise would be John Emburey a couple of years ago.

Do you play in the NW Leics leagues?
-
I played against Broad at school once when I was about 13. A mate hooked him for a four and Broad walked over to him and said if he did it again he'd kill him.
-

We play a couple of friendly games with the New Calypsonian boys, they are great fun. Their deck is horrible though, not a lot of fun facing some of their guys on it!
-
I played against Keiron Pollard a few years, he was 17 or 18 and hit it miles.
I also played against a young Indian lad called Prithvi Shaw last year when he playing for Cleethorpes, he was only 14 and hit our 2 first team opening bowlers all round the park, scored 54 in abut 5 overs before being caught out on the boundary. Prithvi scored 546 in an innings once, a world record apparently, he gets coached by Tendulkar. He was amazing, I was a little disapointed when he got out, if he'd batted all innings he would have got 200+.

haha yeah he bowled quicker than medium for us and batted like a god.
-
Other notable ones I've played against
Raj Maru he scored 92* (dropped on 0 :( ) then bowled 10 overs, 8 maidens, 4 Wickets, 8 runs. I scored half those runs with a slog sweep for a 1 bounce 4 ;)
Last season played against an Australia U19 opener, he batted all day ending 70odd not out chasing 160 ish if I remmber rightly (it was an overseas fixture on the Isle of Wight and I got sloshed on the ferry coming back so don't quote me on that lol!)
-
I played against Gus Logie once (about 20 years ago), he was class. However unfortunately for him our leggie got him out and at tea our leggie shot off to get a t-shirt made up with 'Gus Logie is my bunny' which he wore all night in the bar...luckily Gus saw the funny side.
-
Do you play in the NW Leics leagues?
Play in the Leicestershire and Rutland ecb Premier League yep. A lot of the county boys play, eg Josh Cobb and Greg Smith for Kibworth, Nathan Buck was at Loughborough etc. I played in the same school side as Harry Gurney for 5 years (im year below). Im good mates with him but how he is playing internationally is beyond me. We have Charlie Dagnall playing at my club presently (in between TMS commentary)
-
Can remember my uncle telling me he played against some Pakistani pros in the 90s in some charity matches including Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam. He also played against Tendulkar and has an old Ihsan Rocky from Inzamam.
-
He also played against Tendulkar and has an old Ishan Rocky from Inzamam.
And we have our winner........unless anyone played against the Don?
-
Hayman farhat. Pakistan test player (although brief) and brother of the off imran.
In the 1st game he scored 26 off his first 5 balls. 4 x 4s you weren't ever stopping without him looking like he cared. And a 1 to nab the strike.
We went clock face and he hit a flat shot that never got high than 2 foot from the ground yet was caught at the cover boundary!!
He them stumped without pads standing upto some decent ish pace.
2nd game. He bowled. Badly. Kept trying to bounce me(i got 100 form 57balls).
And then when batting he.got to 36 quickly but was clearly targeting the smaller boundary. He didn't pick my slower ball and skied one for me to take a c and b.
Shame he batted like that. As had he batted properly..he'd have knocked them.off with ease.
-
Yh they take it way too easy
-

I've played agains several blokes who I'd describe as a dong (well, something to the same effect but a bit stronger!)
-

Raj Maru, along with John Emberey, coached me as a kid. They really were class. At the time, didn't really appreciate how much!
-
My Dad once got Eddie Barlow (South Africa's opener in the apartheid years) caught at short leg by Peter Pollock. He also got 9/27 against Holland under 19s.
-

He was being coached in Berks last year by ex-Hants player Julien Wood.
Apparently he's the best thing since sliced bread and the ECB are trying to poach him and get him to move to the UK...
-
My claim to fame is playing with former Blackcap Heath Davis at intermediate school ,which meant playing against him at training ,about 12 years old bowling what must have been 120 - 130 K's :(
-
@Gingerbusiness I've played against a few pro's but this lad was a different level (and only 14!)
If I was a gambler I'd be putting money on him playing for India
-
Does a testimonial count? If so Stephen Fleming, Swanny, Andre Adams, Samit Patel etc
If not Asadullah Butt in his 1st spell for Cutthorpe cc in his younger days was very good (Pakistan 1st class) - think he got a 100 and then a 8 for not many & did play against Notts colts who had A few guys who had played for the 1st team.
Did play against Lee Henshaw who was more famous around the league for his 'ahem' acting skills
-

erm, four fours are sixteen plus one I seventeen...
-

Fat fingers. Sure I corrected it before posting. Lol.
21, 5x4 and a single.
-
A young Kevin Peterson during his time at Cannock.
-
Played against former West Indies captain Alvin Kallacharan and Nayan Doshi (Rajasthan Royals/Surrey) has got me out a couple of times.
-
The bola is far better than any bowler I've seen so far.
-
Have faced... Mark Footitt, Mark Turner (he broke my thumb), Tony Palladino, Tim Groenewald, Iain O'Brien.
Others I have played against- Grayson, Andy Flower and Will Jefferson.
And I taught Grant Flower how to score.
-
In my last year at school (1994 I guess) we played against an MCC touring team that brought along Andy Flower, Kenny Benjamin and Mudassar Nazar. I kept wicket and caught Kenny Benjamin down the legside - big mistake as I also opened the batting! Thankfully he was coming back from an injury so was only bowling off a 'short' run. I closed my eyes and lunged forward to his first ball which I edged. Before I turned around to see if I had been caught, I heard the ball hitting the boards running behind the boundary! Having survived that, Mudassar Nazar got me out the over before tea with a ball which cut back by about a yard! It was a fun day though with all 3 being happy to sign autographs after the game, etc.
-
Bola. Gave me many bruises.
-
Played against Graeme Hick in a Wattlesprigs (Australian touring team) v The Barmy Army at St.Fagans which is in Wales on the eve of the First Test in 2009. Barmy Army had Hick and Nick Knight, we had Dizzy Gillespie and Ian Harvey. We ended up winning but not before Hick made a breezy 50. I've never seen such clean ball-striking in my life. He is a tall guy but his feet were so quick, hit some massive sixes straight and some cover drives that beat me sweeping on the off-side. Great day, I opened up with the bat and faced first ball of the day, fair crowd there too. Great days!
PS: Knight got bowled by a ball that bounced twice!
-
Mike Hussey in grade cricket in Perth. He is not called Mr Cricket for nothing. Great competitor.
-
Played against quite a few pros in the lancs and the ribblesdale league ,,
Steve Waugh ,Shane Warne ,Carl Hooper ,joe Scuderi,Ian Clarkson, etc
But the best I played against was in my junior days, a lad called Paul Crabtree
He was offered a contract for both Lancashire cc and Burnley fc on the same day!
He made batting look effortless , and is the reason I hate left handers to this day!ha
I'm only glad I didn't have to play football against him
He chose to play football and as far as I remember(30 yrs ago)he emigrated to Australia to coach
Played against a lot of Asian lads in the Craven league over the years, who take their cricket very seriously and in a different world, would have made very good county players if given a chance
Also played against a young Asian lad ,think he was about 14,,who scored the most effortless fifty against us, turned out his batting average for Lancashire was over a hundred. He was just sheer class to watch bat
-
I've had the privilege to play with and against some very good players over the years. There are a couple that stick in my mind, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Jimmy Adams (West Indies).
Saqlain was simply outstanding, and took 8 wickets in our league home leg against him. In the return match, Mark Butcher played for us and scored 120 odd.
In the game against Jimmy Adams, he just went about his business and scored a class 74. He played everyone with respect, and just put the bad ball away. It was a real show of class. My claim to fame (and the only false shot he played) that day was that I hit him in the chest with a 'Bouncer' (that should read 'a very slow long hop that he played through it about five minutes before it hit him!'). Also, no churp from him, just a humble man going about his business.

Hi mate, where did/do you play in the Craven league?
And which asian players in particular stood out? Any still playing now that you're aware of
-
Played against Tim Bresnan when I was about 15. He was quite brisk to say the least and made his Yorkshire debut later that summer.
-
Played against the Sri Lankan national team as a pre warm up game for them before the ICC Champions Trophy started in the UK during the 2003? season... They were a handy bunch. :D
In club cricket, have played against Jimmy Neesham, Chris Drum (x Kiwi test/odi player).. those the ones that come to mind immediately!
-
@wasted_talent you're winning seen as you've played against an international team
-
lol... pretty sure there is a scorecard of the game somewhere..
we bowled well, restricted them to under 250 in a rain reduced game of 45/per side.
but then were blown away when batting, all out for under a 100 albeit we managed to bat for almost 40 overs!
-

I played for Cullingworth as an overseas player in 2004. Had a great time, wish I could go back but won't happen now with work commitments...
-
Marcus Trescothick, Ian Harvey, Jos Buttler, Pete Trego, Jamie Overton, James Hildreth and a few other Somerset and Gloucestershire pros. The best has to be either Trescothick or Buttler, but the most promising has to Tom Abell, young batsman who recently signed a contract for Somerset. Played him a few times in club cricket and looks a great player.
Also a few young lads who I play with at uni in Cardiff could potentially be good county players, some already have contracts with counties so will be intersting to see how they turn out in a few years time!
-
^ Wow! How did it happen with Jos Butler? How did it go? Was he smashing it all over?
-
Played Matt Sinclair in a club knockout game on Sunday. Class act. Scored a run-a-ball ton without even breaking a sweat. Didn't hit a single shot in anger, just stroked it all around the ground.
-
^ Wow! How did it happen with Jos Butler? How did it go? Was he smashing it all over?
He's played against our club a couple of times, the first was when he was around 17 in a cup game, he helped himself to 40 odd and looked a class act even when he was that young! More recently, I played against him last year when my club played against Somerset. He put a few out the park!
-
Courtney Walsh, Jimmy Adams and Wavell Hinds (all in one team) are the best I've played against. Best I've played with is probably Carlton Baugh.

Was that playing against BOCA ( Barbados overseas cricket association)? I used to play against this lot a fair few years ago when I was 20 odd, just a barrage of fast bowling and if you were semi decent a barrage of short fast bowling and then watching them swagger about smashing to all parts. But also one of the friendliest teams I have ever played against

No, it was a "Courtney Walsh Foundation XI" in Kingston, Jamaica. The only disappointment was that Courtney couldn't convince Curtley to play! The guys were all great and the post match Guinness Export and Dominoes was a sight to behold. Courtney and Jimmy were two of the nicest guys I've met.

How did Trescothick do?
Heard he was dropped, caught behind, first ball? Ha
-
Just looked up Tom Abell, very impressed
-
I played with Tom Abell against my usual club on a Sunday. The keeper dropped him when he was on 4, it was a sitter too. he went on to get 95 by stroking it all round the park and expending no effort whatsoever. He looked good.
also Played with a current Somerset player when playing county youth cricket, he was quality then though there was someone better who I have never heard of since.
the best player I played against was Bill Athey. He played for the MCC against my school side. he played in the same vain as Tom Abell but gave no chances. Everything came out if the middle and everything went between fielders.
-
Played against ppccopener a few times not got him out yet.
-
Collis King and Sherwin Campbell in the same team against my school first team.
Both scored runs effortlessly.
-
How did Trescothick do?
Heard he was dropped, caught behind, first ball? Ha
was a simple catch.
i hit jamie overton for 6 in LMS type game the same day
-

How did you get on against Drummy? When i played with him he got a shed load of wickets
-
Not me, and not properly playing, but in 1987 Pakistan played the Minor Counties at the Ind Coope ground in Burton on Trent. They put out a pretty strong team, which you can see if you follow the link. They were at the ground early to have a net, and invited some of the young Ind Coope CC lads, who were there as stewards, to bowl at them. Although he wasn't playing in the game they all got the opportunity to bowl at Wasim Akram as well.

Ben Stokes for me in a midweek T20 the season before he joined Durham, he still holds the record for the quickest century in that leagues history 103 off 42 balls (or somewhere near) aged 14/15 at the time. He didn't get me out though!
-
Played all my junior cricket against, Ben Stokes (Durahm) Jamie Harrison (Durham) Jordan Clark (Lancashire) and Greame Clark (Durham). Professional wise, best bowler was probably Kenroy Peters (at 14 he was scary fast for me, 49* that day mind) Also Played with Kelby Pickering. One of the best bowlers I have had the pleasure of fielding first slip to.

Played against Pickering a couple of times when he was at Loughton in Essex League. Good bowler.
-
He could nudge it through at a fair rate of knotts, especially when things were not going his way. I played a season with him when I was playing for Forfarshire in the Scottish Leagues.
-
Played Adam Milne & Douglas Hondo last year.
-
Played pre-season game against lancs first. Atherton, Titchard, Crawley, fairborther was the top four I had to open
Up against luckily not needed to bat as Chappel and Martin steamed in, in dying light on a bouncy old trafford track.
-

I thought I recognised the name, remember facing him up at Forthill.
-
Noticed a few of our ex-pros cropping up here, nice to see.
Had the good fortune to play with/against some very good players, sometimes you just watch in awe at how effortless they make it look. Played against Chris Harris once and he ended up with ridiculous figures, every ball was different and we had no clue how to play him.
A guy called Jon Jon Smuts once smacked us for a massive score, hit our pro for 30+ off one over, at one point while I was bowling at him we ran out of balls. Later that year I saw him clearing the front leg and punting 150kph Shaun Tait deliveries into the stands in a CL T20, made me feel a little better.

You definitely play in the lancs league
-
You're not wrong!
Tbh I've only played 1st team consistently for the last few years and the standard of pros isn't what it was 10-15 years ago, still some very impressive amateurs in the league though.
-
Who do you play for?
-
Colne.
-
And what's your name?
-
How highly do you rate Ali azmat??
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Ali Azmat is my best mate in cricket I played with Ali for 4 season he is a a very aggressive batsman who can destroy teams and his bowling is underrated he can take wickets and tie a end up.
Decent fielder
Top guy have you signed him
-
He also brings me a bat over and we do a bat for lid swap top lad
-
I don't rate him at all. Scored 2 150s last year then he would score a run for weeks. As soon as a pro with abit of something about him that bowls at first class level bowls at him he was clueless. We played colne at home and he walked out and tried to put the second ball he faced into orbit. Not the kind of pro Id want on my side
-
His record in league cricket is very good.
He still holds or did the league record Ribblesdale league with over 1700 runs in a season.

Very very good bat, took Neser apart who was fresh out of IPL at the time, unfortunately manages to find horrible ways of getting out at really bad moments, especially in a fairly weak side like ours.
Tbh things soured as the season went on and it didn't end that well.
-
Shivnarine Chanderpaul...in Florida. He's a pretty decent leggie too, fyi.
-
Chris Gayle in 1998 U19 World Cup
-
Will have to see how he goes for us in the leicestershire prem. What's his spin like?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
It ok nothing to flash he bowls flights left arm and has a decent arm ball.
Nice lad I guess you got him through Gary Hunt.
He is decent make no mistake a good clubman too and decent junior coach
-
Kerrigan, Luis Reece, Andy Miller, Gary Knight, Tom Smith..... all in club cricket on their way onto the County scene. Got young Luis out. Off-cutter, off-cutter, out swinger, I thank you.

We were very closely linked to signing him for this season, but it fell through for one reason or another! Looks a top player with a first class average of nearly 40, a missed opportunity for us :(

Kegsy never played Northern League, he went to Liverpoool Comp

The club I play for now attracted Jimmy Adams in 2003. I wasn't playing for them then but my brother was. Here is Jimmy's Stats.

Due to politics and a new kid.. I'm thinking about playing 2's this year so I don't have to be competitive as much (I'll still train as hard as ever as I enjoy it). Wonder if these stats could be competed with!! Would be awesome to score 1000 Saturday league runs in one season!
-

David Ward had / has the Surrey Championship league record with 1500 runs at average of exactly 100. This is from memory and it was a good few years ago. I don't have the league book to confirm actual stats but deffo averaged exactly 100 that year.
Awsome bat and decent bloke as well.
-
Wasim Jaffer is by far the best I have played against. Set the league record with over 2000 runs a few years ago.
-
That'll be palace shield then?
Correct Johnny, Palace Shield indeed - which all starts tomorrow... And Andy Miller has just signed back on for Longridge, having not played as a pro last year.
-
Played with Millsy at Preston. He never wanted to leave Longridge in the first place, but it was strongly suggested to him that it was necessary for his development.
