Title: Handle repair
Post by: ChAoZ on January 16, 2015, 01:46:49 AM
My boss has a Kookaburra Bubble bat with the handle starting to come loose , he used to use the bat when he played rep cricket and it has sentimental value to him - so being the suck-up that I am I would like to fix it for him ,I build electric guitars in my spare time so I'm not a total woodworking cabbage, and I have the tools and glue for the job
My main question is how to remove the handle before re-gluing can be done ?

You'll need to cut it out. Preferably with a band saw.

Oh damn ,I was hoping there was a way to get the handle out and re-use it  :(

Unfortunately not. It's a cut out and new handle.

generally(As there is always exceptions) the handle is broke when it feels loose. The glue doesn't tend to give way.
So there a high chance the current handle is very unusable if you could get it out without cutting.

when you starting to come loose what do you mean? is the current glue on there failing and therefore theres a chance it could be reusable or has it split/ broken in anyway?

most of the time you have to cut the handle out and replace. I did have a friend who purchased an indian made bat and after knocking in and light net use the handle literally fell out. I had a look and it was definitely glued in but using the smallest amount of the weakest glue known to man. I re-glued it and its been fine since.

Could you be more discriptive  ie is the handle loose in the vee ? Are there any cracks around the shoulders? Is the handle binding tight etc.

You can actually re-activate PVA and animal hide glue with steam. I wouldn't suggest trying it though, I've not done it myself so wouldn't recommend it. Easiest way would be to send it off to someone for them to cut out and replace. It'll look like new if done correctly.

As the bat is a spare and in a poor condition would not recommend paying for a repair just glue with PVA then clamp and wrap with fibre glass tape.
