Title: A few of my pod shaving efforts...
Post by: Scruffy on February 02, 2015, 06:30:01 AM
Hi everyone,
I've been shaping pre-pressed and handled clefts for a couple of years now, and am obviously still learning, but thought I would share a few pictures of some bats I've recently completed...

Looks a good effort mate like the profile seems keeping with what's in at the moment with if the pics are not decieving a duck bill toe and lots if wood in the hitting zone

Look like great shapes.

What are you oiling them with?
Title: Re: A few of my pod shaving efforts...
Post by: amritpremi on February 02, 2015, 07:00:39 AM
Looks like you are doing it very well, a bit too much oiling for my liking (could be just camera fault), waxing may make them look slightly better imo.

Thanks for the comments  :)

I think the colour of the bats is a combination of the camera and bad light in the workshop, I have finished with a horses shin bone, one coat of linseed oil and then buffed...

Here they are outside...

Hi Guys, I thought I would share my latest bat with you all. It was a strange request, but i'm happy with the way it has come out...
The request was for a shoulder-less bat, like the old Newbery Excalibur, but for it to have a little "scoop" as the old Magnums used to have.
All dressed up it weighs in at 2.10, but picks up well for a bat thats bottom heavy.

Like that a lot
Always been interested in trying a shoulder less bat, to see how it affects the balance and pick up
Top effort

Finished another couple of bats over the weekend, on opposite ends of the weight scale...
1st bat is a 2lb 13oz monster, 1 inch longer blade, long handle (new owner is 6'6) with a low swell, for the slow/low grass wickets we get over here.
2nd bat is 2lb 6.7oz. Short handle. This bat will be mainly used for indoor cricket, and picks up beautifully.

those bats look the business, would think they had been made by a craftsman of many years.

I see the finish is different to the first lot you posted. did you do something different this time?

Cheers Garrett, I have got my hands on a hand held sander/buffer/polisher used for wood turning, makes a huge difference to the finishing.
I think the fact I have actually learnt the settings on the camera helps also...

Yes, I'm making to order, even sent a few to Australia recently. Price wise, its been a case by case basis, depending on what I can get the clefts for - I am in NZ.
I am pretty sure I cant sell on here? but its nice to get feedback anyway.

Hi everyone, I had a request this week to make a bat around 2.9 - 2.10, with a high middle and pronounced duck bill. I think you could almost call it a platypus.
Here is the finished bat...

In theory, problems being you'd need a huge printer, and it would cost a lot, and take a long time if you printed in abs plastics ( most 3d printed items now are hollow with struts trough the middle) if you think about a medium quality print as taking roughly 15mins per gram that would take ages to print a full size bat

Here you go... Its had a net since the last photos
A decent amount of concaving, and a pretty flat duckbill.
Comes in at 2lb 10.5oz all dressed, and 34mm edges at the highest point.

2lb 11oz all dressed. 25mm edges & 60mm spine.

Hi all, I had a cleft which I was ignoring as it was on the heavy side, and not the prettiest to look at, so I thought Id have a go at a new shape.
This is my take on the offset edge. 2lb 10.8oz all dressed, 37mm edges, minimal concaving.

This one was made for a local, who was looking for a bat with a low middle, at around 2.11-2.12.
2lb 11.3oz dressed, mid-low sweet spot, minimal concaving. A really nice piece of willow

Just highlighting the avoidance of stickers, saving 1oz+ and returning it to the bat in terms of extra willow. Surprised more batmakers haven't gone down this route.

Its a shame that stickers sell bats, but thats the way it is!
I would rather the wood/grains/finish be the first thing people look at, but thats just my personal preference.

Hi Guys, thanks for all the positive comments so far! I really enjoy being able to share these bats with you all.
Is there any shape/style that any of you would like to see?
another weekend, another bat finished...
Was asked to make something with a high middle, and big edges at around 2.10 - 2.11.
Grade 2, standard blade, short handle.
Finished weight is 2lb 11.5oz, 39mm edges at the highest point, 62mm spine, 21mm toe.
To allow for the bigger edges, there is more concaving than usual, but I am very happy with how this one taps up.

Hi everyone, after being busy for the last month or so, I finally found some time to smash out another bat. This one was a request from a local, and is a very similar shape to the last bat posted, though 2 oz lighter.
Grade 2
2lb 9.5oz
37mm Edge
20mm Toe
My camera decided to give up on me, so please excuse the phone pics...

Well done Paul for taking the  wieght out  of the shoulders to retain a large  hitting area also 20 mm toe is thick enough and will assist the pickup.

Classy looking stick mate, love the lazer engraved branding on all your bats. Because there is a lot wood taken out of the shoulders and top end of the bat do you ever feel it'll be very weak in the area and more likely to break in this area?

Thanks mate!
I feel there is still a good amount of wood in the top end of the bat, enough to give it the strength required to take a beating from the ball anyway. This design is certainly not as radical, or has had as much wood taken out of the top of the bat as some other bat makers/companies have done.
I think its all about finding a good balance between structural integrity, pickup & how much wood you can get in the hitting area.
