I was in the loft the other day scrabbling around trying find something or other for the wife when I spotted some of my old bats and it got me reminiscing about just how many bats from different brands I have owned in 18 seasons of playing. I thought it would be a good chance to compare just how many brands some people have owned, are you a one brand man or do you like to see what else is out there?
To qualify for the 'collection' it is a bat that you must have owned (if not used) that was not just stickered up i.e. a GM with Puma stickers is counted as a GM.
My list in no particular order is ....
Stuart Surridge
GM
GN
Hunts
Bulldog x 2
Newbury
DF x 2
CA
Talisman
Mongoose
Canterbury
Warsop
McLean
Fusion
BS
Double B (very old bat that I got free with another bat from eBay and sold back on there)
CJI
STAC
I suspect my list of previous brands will be very small compared to some on here.
Go on then share your list...
-

The best bat I had I think was a County bat in a Tendulkar shape or one of the Pak bats, which had a very similar shape. I really ought to dig it out of the loft and have a copy made...
Note that since joining the forum the number has gone from 7 to 15...

Good to know I'm in the majority group on the voting thus far! Although I am developing a problem, I feel like I need a new bat every year so by the time I give up the game I'll likely be on 40+ bats!

I suppose the other interesting question with regard to this topic is "Which brands, out of all those you have owned, do you go back to for your match bats?" Out of the 39 I've owned, there are really not very many.
I consistently use either GN, Hunts and TK-made brands. I've also recently come to the conclusion that B3 are worth returning to. I might have bought multiples of other brands, but they've always been sold on.
Only 10% get my repeat custom!

Brands that did get my repeat custom:
Woodworm
Chase
The problem now is that I'm on this forum though, so there's a lot of brands I'd like to try, meaning to get repeat custom any brand will have to provide me with belters or I'll think "I wonder what (insert brand name here) bats are like"
-
First was a grays power spot for school
Slazenger v500 select
Woodworm torch
Kook kahuna mayhem

Very true mate. We are spoiled for choice and it is an ultra-competitive market. I think it emphasises the importance of, not only quality product but, quality customer service.

All three were not suitable,(that's the nicest way to put it)

the 2 MH I have have been superb, best I've ever used .... although I did borrow one with blue stickers and it was very average and very bottom heavy
what was the issue, please don't tell me the sanding on them as that's not an issue and doesn't affect run scoring.
-

this is interesting - I have tried a vast number of bats during the bat testing we have done - of the bats I have used, I would give repeat custom to Blank Bats, County and my unknown Pakistani mate... but I also "need" to own a B3, RPC and an H4L at some point.
-

Nah,,, couldn't give a monkeys about finishing once I'm out there batting with it
My bat snapped in half! The second one was an overweight plank that I struggled to give away!
My sons cracked on one edge, and the toe. (It had been knocked in by me and an anti scuff fitted)
The others I have seen have had similar issues
They tend to lack the performance the high purchase price would suggest
And the back up service is questionable
But, one of the best bats I've picked up and had a net with, was an M&H
They can do decent bats, perhaps not as often as they should for the price
As for bats I would buy again
I'm on my fourth Affinity, just bought two Carbines, one for me, one for my son
He wants my Toro for Sunday games
Would also buy Aldred without hesitation
-
arent affinity and MH off the same pressing machine ........ so effictively the same bats?
-
Are you telling me or asking me?
Cos I have no idea
-
Repeat brands for me now and match bats are BB, RPC & H4L, everything else is more due to curiosity and I end up passing them off.
-
Gn ignite 4*
Gn ignite carbo
2012
Kookaburra kahuna 1000
Kook kahuna 600
Kook kahuna 600
2013
RPC custom
BLueroom
2014
H4l (match bat for 2015 and one a mate broke)
Red ink - cheap copy of my RPC, purely for nets
aldred - sold on after one game as it was way to bottom heavy and heavy for me.
6 brands , 11 actual bats in 4 seasons of me playing cricket.
Only two brands have had repeat custom
-
Duncan Fearnley - Thin as a pencil, quite possibly the worlds densest cleft, however went like the clappers.
MRF Genius - Big Bat decent performance
Slazenger V800 - Would have been more suitable as floor board
Gray Nics E41 LE - 20+ Grains Pressed very hard, still trying to get it to open up in the nets
TON Heritage - Heavily concaved still a decent bat
TON Players Edition Full Profile - Current match bat and absolute gun!
-

Thanks WW, it's been a hard transition for my SO to make from me not only being obsessed with the game but now being obsessed with the gear too haha!
I thought the kind of first wave of Woodworm bats were great, the Flame I had is still a weapon, our opening bat has been using it for the past few seasons, he's just got a H4L NV on my recommendation though, might have to introduce him to the forum too :)

Most I have done in a year is around 36 bats mainly on this forum
Not bought many in last couple of years
-
I've already had one of those.... Should I have mentioned it separately? That would take me to 40!
I would say so because they are two separate makers, and this topic ask for makes.
40 is good, more the better ;)
-
7 makes in chronological order:
Gunn & Moore Maestro
Duncan Fearnley Magnum
Gray Nicholls Powerspot
Spyder Legend from Stoke
Red Ink custom and Red Ink Sirius
Aldred Velocity and Aldred Spectre
Millichamp & Hall Original High and Millichamp & Hall Harlequin
GN was my favourite mainstream brand with good finish, performance and reasonable price in those days (90s). I gave it to a friend when he got into cricket, as an adult, and I moved away. I use it in the nets (+/- bowling machine) when I go visit. I have great fondness for it but when I last used it the fibre tech sheet was disintegrating with every shot and embedding itself in the bola balls. Crazy thing is it's having a second wind. My mate is sending to GN to get a refurb, so may post some before and after pictures soon.
M&H play well and I love their shapes but the finish is some of the worst I have come across. Meanwhile Red Ink and Aldred are my favourites in every regard, and imagine buying more kit from them one day.
Would like: H4L Hattori, Blue Room /RPC Bombora or New Wave😀

Brands I've owned in order that I can remember are:
Slazenger Panther
Duncan Fearnley (GT1000, VR5* - first adult bat and used for over 10 years)
Symonds Super Tusker
GM (Cannon & Striker)
Hunts County Reflex
Kookaburra Bubble
Newbery (Mjolnir, Uzi & GT335)
Stac - Black Prince x2
Crusader something? soon got shot of!
Bradbury Sterling
Salix Pod (still going after 8 years)
Hawk - unlabelled from new
Willostix Stick
H4L NV
So that's 14 brands. My mates thing I have an addiction problem, but clearly not compared to many on here!
Can't believe I've never owned a GN especially as I scored my first ever ton when I borrowed a mates after leaving mine at home. Some very good and some very poor bats in there. For me Newbery, Salix and Stac have stood out for best performance, although the GT335 5* was dreadful. Really hoping my new H4L will live up to the Salix as it really can't last much longer from the tough life its had.

Did you have 3 M&H bats because 2 were replacements or are you a sucker for punishment?!
What Jedi bat did you own? what was it like to play with?
-
I had about 6 from James
Mine was nice, but didn't last long, toe went, delaminated etc after about 500 runs
One out of the other 4 was very nice, but was broken by a dodgy ball, the others not so good.
Like a lot of brands, it all depends if you can get their best bit of willow from them.
I don't really want to diss Jedi but I was very disappointed
-
Setting the bar pretty high there gents!
For me:
Slazenger (Master Blaster, V12, V100x2)
CA (5000)
Laver (x2)
M&H (Distinction)
Fisher (Custom)
Grove (Majestic)
Ihsan (Crown)
SS (Gutsy)
BAS (x2)
Salix (Torque players)
Aldred (Velocity)
JPGavan (Custom)
MSR (x3)
B&S (Assegai)
Black Cat (Joker)
I'm hoping to pick up a used Impala and Bluetongue in the not too distant future.
How did the Fisher Custom compare to the JPGavan custom?
I’m currently tossing up between the two for my next bat.

How did the Fisher Custom compare to the JPGavan custom?
I’m currently tossing up between the two for my next bat.
@essendon2
Both make an outstanding bat. I’ve got a grade 3 that I picked up off Josh and it plays as well as anything I’ve ever owned. The Fisher was a special bat and I will always regret selling it on.
Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Stuart surridge (best bat ever)
DF (total gun)
Chase (not great)

Salix (3) (gorgeous, all of them)

Most of these were 2nd hand and were moved on for the same price I bought them for. Others I picked up at charity shops/shop at the municipal tip for a few pounds, refurbed, used a few times and moved on. It’s like a hobby where I can rerurb otherwise neglected bats, test them out and then move onto the next ones.
The missus doesn’t mind until they start encroaching into the living room. She’s a keeper.

Unsure on the numbers but going off the top of my head I've had these over the years:
Fearnley: Magnum, Hammer, Gold. Grew up using Fearnley, used to be class - shame about the current incarnation. Would love to see them back at the forefront.
Slazenger: Silver V1200, back in my youth
GM: Chrome Sig, no qualms. Got me 700+ runs, good value for money.
GN: Velocity LE reps sample from Vitas, never got on with it so sold it on
Charlie French: Good performance but went through 2 within the space of 6 months - first split badly but was replaced FoC with no quibble so can't fault CF
New Balance: DC1080 - Orange one, good stick
Puma: Calibre, tiny edges, tiny profile - went like a gun. Probably started my pessimism over the "bigger bats make the ball go further" myth.
Mongoose: Titans of Cricket Edition Cor3 - tad heavy but was a weapon, regret ever selling it! Was used in the ToC event.
B3: No comment - glad I sold it.
There's also one other brand but I'm pretty sure you can all guess :D

Couldn't say much about it gave a teammate £10.00 for it it had excellent ping believe it was Kashmir willow think i sold it at a a car boot as it felt heavy
-
Funny story...i had no clue about bats and willow about 2 years ago. So bought a BDM kashmir willow as my first bat off amazon. scored 25 off less than 10 balls in first match. My team mate asked me how much i want for it and what grade it is. ( I still have it though)
Then i started to learn about grades etc and things got complicated and i ended up with 10 bats .

I've had a few from each of the "big names".
Gray Nics, Gunn & Moore, Slazenger, Hunts County, Kookaburra, Newbery. Haven't had a Salix or M&H.
Also a blank bat off ebay that looked great but broke the first time I used it, and a B3, which is great.
I also have a Gradidge Len Hutton autograph

I'll add a few words in each as that's the fun but isn't it!
GN x3 - two great bats and one plank, wish the handles weren't so thin
Kook - original Big Kahuna, absolutely magic bat.
Bradbury x2 - bought a lovely bat, went in the toe early. Replacement was a gun but split in half.
Phoenix - local shop make, Hunts sourced. Lovely bat/handle but too much concaving.
MSR x4 - really decent bats at bargain prices, perform well but handles are rubbish.
Red Ink - great handle
Aldred - butterfly, phenomenal bat. Spot on handle, lovely balance and goes like stink.
B3 x2 - one that picked up poorly but went like a train and one that was far too light for me. Handles much too thin.
Spyder - bargain off here, decent little bat. Round handle.
Mongoose x3 - all the different lengths, all fantastic bats. Great handles.
H4L - decent enough but unimpressed with handle.
Puma - eBay bargain, monster size, nice bat. Handle a but thin but nice shape.
Laver - classic profile, can see why people like them but struggled to fall for it.
-
@edge I'm happy I'm not the only one mentioning the handle as one of the biggest deciding factors in the bat comparisons- I was starting to think I was odd :)
Definitely, it's not the be all and end all but makes a huge difference to a bat. Good comparison is Phoenix vs H4L - the Phoenix isn't that good a profile but the handle makes it a great bat, the H4L I had was an NV which is bang on my kind of profile but the handle made it a very average bat for me.
-
When you talk about handles, are you talking about flex or shock absorption or merely how they feel in hand? What makes a good handle?
-
