Title: Overly harsh on Dernbach and Bresnan
Post by: joeljonno on February 14, 2015, 08:54:30 AM
I was discussing the Eng-Aus World Cup game on FB which got me thinking.

In the last few years, England had Dernbach and Bresnan as 'death' bowlers in the ODIs.

Their performance was generally poor and Dernbach especially ridiculed.

Since their departures, England have continually failed to restrict runs at the end of the innings, showing it is a very difficult ask.

Now, I am not saying that Dernbach and Bresnan should be playing, but it did make me think that they maybe weren't as bad as they were made out to be and that the coaching/advice might be the cause of the issues.

Judging by this mornings death bowling and the plan of bowling half track slower balls that get smashed can't understand why Dernbach isn't in as he's perfect for that job 🙊

You have to question the planing/coaching - what's up with bowling full at the stumps and setting the field accordingly? So Haddons normal ploy is to step away to leg and lash it through the offside - so why bowl wide of off stump with no boundary riders?

I think a few of us could do that job mate :)      ability to bowl slow - check... ability to bowl half trackers - check..

Bowling slow half trackers is just a terrible plan.

Saker needs to be fired.

He is responsible for these go d awful plans which jade and bresnan and now woakes and others are being told to bowl. Utter rubbish. Where are the wide Yorkers and leg stump Yorkers etc.
Village.

Agree as someone who bowls at the death you try and pitch the ball up to restrict the batsman Yorkers if you can aim at the batsmans big toe get the Yorkers in if the batsman advances down the wicket bowl faster and wider.

To be fair, no one really thought Bresnan did a bad job - he was just unfortunate that England decided that they needed him to keep bowling through that elbow injury which resulted in him losing pace and therefore effectiveness.  The issue was and is more that England don't have the right types of bowlers to get ahead of the game earlier int he innings, so the opposition always seem to have a raft of power hitters available for the end game.

i think the players and coaches have to take the blame. Even if these are pre determined plans it always takes England longer than other bowlers to work out they aren't working and usually change tactics.

Dernbach didn't bowl well at the start, middle or end of an innings in my opinion. He just isn't good enough.

Out of interest, who else is there to take the blame?

If theres a plan to bowl slow ball bouncers then thats fine, the lack of ability to change to plan B or C if needed is frustrating. If i'm getting smashed bowling a certain ball, then isnt it common sense to put that away and bowl something else? At the end of the day these guys are "professionals" and should have plenty of deliveries in reserve.

I dont understand that last comment, "Why do England need KP?" Is he going to have a go at bowling at the death with his little off breaks?

All you have to do is look at KPs Twitter feed as to his activities with his car this morning and it speaks volumes why he's not in the England setup.....
