Title: Solution required
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on March 10, 2015, 08:15:43 PM
Right,
I net 4-5 times a week ( probably adds up to about 10-15 hours in total). I currently just keep my gloves from the previous season and use them as netting gloves. What I've found though is that I'm making them crusty very quickly and destroying even top end gloves.

so, what can I do to either make gloves last longer?? or should I buy a load of cheap pairs and just churn through 20 quid sets rather than 60 quid sets? opinions wanted.

currently each session I use up 2 pairs as I don't want it all sweaty so I'd probably be buying 4 pairs so I can rotate each day

I always have inners in my gloves and a bit off baby powder in the gloves helps to dry the sweat up and makes your gloves last a little longer

What gloves you currently use? Pittards or non pittards?

I have a similar problem. I don't like wearing inners as they make your hands too hot and give me less feel on the handle. Does anyone have the leather restoring liquid they use on leather car seats? If so could you give it a go and see what happens.

Use it as an excuse to buy more gear ;)

i have been nick, unfortunately 200+ quid for netting gloves feels excessive

Try non pittards?

Never got on with pittards. So don't use. And at one point this winter I was netting 4 times a week. Even twice a day once! My gray nics kaboom and prestige are still nice and subtle.

Don't we all :( He's lucky enough to have his own net!

I still do two-three sessions a week at the Prince of Wales nick, mainly against spin as I've totally got a new way to play, plus I face the guys from brum prem so I get to face true pace. unfortunately, last year the league I was in was crap, they were all league dilly dobblers and that's what I'm weak against.. for some reason I can't play medium crap.. pace sure.. spin.. sure... dilly dobbley, totally at sea

@ProCricketer1982 I may be able to get some "£60" gloves for £35

One solution is to rotate the gloves you use quite often, saves them from getting soaked with sweat

Full time work 37.5 to 44 hours a week average.

Hours in a week. 168.

Sure you could fit one in somewhere??

nets doesn't use up much time though, hour, hour and a bit max. turn up, machine on, hit hit hit.. unpad.. go home.  If I had to go to club nets type thing or set up the machine etc every time I wouldn't net as much.. would use up way to much time

This is true. There just aren't the facilities in Rural Australia to be able to do this easily unfortunately. That coupled with the fact that my hours of work are crap, and the team I play for are an hour away makes things difficult!

Back in the day when I was a flourishing junior living in the city I used to train 3 nights a week, and play 3 games a weekend. Those were the days!!

I wish there was a place up to net up north (i.e. Cumbria), I don't think I'd ever leave if there was such a place haha  :D

it does sound harder if there is nothing around and more unsociable hours. I only find it easy as I have my own nets tbh.

Logically speaking you could consider either (a) addressing the cause of your sweating or (b) just manage the symptom itself. I think most people would go with route (b), and on this forum that means more kit!

(A) ADDRESSING THE CAUSE OF YOUR SWEATING
I think the obvious causes of sweating are  (1) it's hot outside, (2) the batsman is nervous/ adrenaline is pumping, or  (3) you were just made that way.

(1) Now bear with me on this, I did see a program on the BBC I think where they were trying to cool down sportsmen/ women in the most efficient way to maximise their performance and endurance. What they found was that by cooling their hands they could cool the rest of their bodies and core temperatures far better than any other technique. So for added benefits, how about keeping 2-3 pairs of gloves in a cooler box with your drinks and ice packs. Sounds naff but might be a worthy and relatively cheap experiment. Alternatively keep your hands cool with cold drink before the innings!

(2) Not sure you would want to reduce your nerves or adrenaline though if you're nervous to the point of being sick, as I have seen, then you could go down the beta-blocker route as many people use for driving tests, and reportedly so snooker players or darts players may use to keep their hands steady. It only controls the physical symptoms of stress, and not the mental ones, and it would have to be bad to warrant seeing your doctor about, and it's debatable whether he/ she would agree to prescribe in that circumstance unless it was affecting other activities of daily living. Plus beta blockers do have side effects, potentially brewer's droop amongst other things! Other options are relaxation techniques. There are some in PitchVision I think.

(3) If you're made that way (sweaty), then go to plan (b).

(B) MANAGING THE SYMPTOM, i.e. SWEAT
(1) As has been said above - and as would be popular on here you could just buy more kit- gloves, inners, forearm sweat bands
(2) Try Anhydrol roll-on to your palms over a period of weeks to reduce your sweating
(3) If you're spending £200 on gloves - have you considered IONTOPHORESIS and even Botox to your hands? Not saying I would, but just asking the question.

In summary, try Anhydrol roll-on or experiment with cooling hands/ gloves pre-use :) Perhaps I should have just said that at the beginning.

Have non-pittards gloves (because pittards absorbs more sweat) and wear inners.

Just my two cents.

solution - INNER GLOVES.  VKS do decent ones for about £3 a pop - I must go through two dozen pairs a year!
