Thought I'd just quickly make a thread for us to discuss the upcoming county season :).
Appears as though Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor is retiring from international cricket at the age of 29 in order to pursue a career at Notts who will presumably be missing Hales and Taylor with regularity with season while Lumbs out injured for the start of the season and Hampshire have resigned Owais Shah for the T20 blast.
-
Yorkshire look very strong on paper and with Finch, Maxwell and Williamson they have some exciting overseas talent.
It will come down how many England take for their 1s and Lions games.

No lions tours this summer I think so none should go from there. Wonder if Maxwell will be the big show or no show again :D.

Well, that's potentially good then. Just see what the England squad is then.
I think his recent performances show he has matured a bit and improved. Whether that is a long term thing or a flash in the pan, we will wait and see.

Somerset have Abdur Rehman all season, if anyone fancies watching classical top quality spin bowling.
Dont think there's been anuly major domestic signings or moves for any counties though?
-
Compton to Middlesex and Shahzad to Sussex are the only players with international caps moving as far as I can think of.
-
Of course, Compton... *grinds teeth*
-
Yorkshire to win the County Championship and the T20
I have no idea who will win the 50 over stuff, such a hit and miss competition in my view...
-
How the bookies view it if anyones interested :

Notts appear to be the team consistently up the top along with Yorkshire however will be interesting to see how they go if Taylor and Hales disappear regularly and the fact that Lumb's out for the start.
-
is sangakkara playing for slurry all season?
If so, I'd back surry with a £5. He'll be top scorer by a mile.. Oh, and if KP comes back.. that county will do well
-
there seems to be a few good overseas signings for the natwest blast this year, hopefully it'll make it exciting.
-
Massively looking forward to watching Sangakkara bat.

Somehow Surreys overseas players always seem to underperform.
Yorkishire look ominously good, again.
-

Yorkishire look ominously good, again.
Ponting did well from memory.. Smith not so well :(
-
Even Ponting looked so out of form he couldn't buy a run... although he's so ruddy minded, he still managed to average above 100!
-
Kent don't have money to sign an overseas but can sign all of their old boys and Rob Key's mates
-
Glos have got Peter Handscombe for t20 also, the young lad who smashed a ton in the BBL for KP's franchise
-
Kent don't have money to sign an overseas but can sign all of their old boys and Rob Key's mates
I bet Kent pay loads for all their management, analysts etc etc
-
Sussex have also got Mahela Jayawardene for the first 7 Blast matches
-
Yorkshire bringing in Pujara in replacement for Younis Kahn, in my opinion an even better signing!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32149303 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32149303)
-
There are some pretty Decent overseas around in County Cricket this year!
Gayle
McCullum
Sangakarra
Jayawardene
Pujara
Williamson
Finch
Maxwell
Dilshan
Ryder
Philander
Hilfenhaus
Tait
Sammy
Brendan Taylor (Kolpak, i know)
And those are just the ones off the top of my head, bound to be plenty more quality players that i can't think of.
-
ignoring T20 and OD stuff, how many are going to play at least half a LVCC season though?? (this is the one that makes decent players after all)
-
Somerset's 4 overseas players covering this season- Chris Gayle, Corey Anderson, Sohail Tanvir and Abdur Rehman.. Not bad!
-
Was suprised to see Fidel Edwards sign as a kolpak for Hampshire for the second half of the season. Didn't realise he was even still playing. Does anyone know if he's still up at a good pace like he used to be?
-
Bloody Voges getting picked for Aus has messed up Middlesex's planning. They'll need to get a decent signing to replace him, they are murmuring that they have a high-class replacement, but I've no idea who?
-

My word, you'll find a way to make anything a Negative won't you?
Why not accept that there's a lot of good overseas coming over (for whatever format) and that is a GOOD thing.
-

I asked who is coming over for the LVCC season as that's more relevant to the test team than someone playing in the T20. Hardly a crime and someone here for a few T20 games isn't exactly going to really push on the development of things if we are honest.

But isn't the fact that we prioritise the CC over the OD & T20 competitions the reason we suck the big one at International Level One day stuff?
Treating them more evenly is the only way we're going to improve, and that includes fans perception of the formats.

I'd take losing T20 and ODI world cups but be Test no:1 anytime.

This is what is missing from the English game. I love test matches just as much as the next Englishman but we have to look at the bigger picture, we are a woeful limited overs side due to our stubbornness to change.
Brendon McCullum is playing for the Birmingham Bears for half of the T20 games. I'm sure he will entertain crowds this summer but the potential impact of him offering advice and help to the next generation of players for Warwickshire could benefit the county massively across all formats. No player dares to play like him in England for fear of failure, it's a sad sight of affairs.
Attracting players through all formats will help to improve the current standard of county cricket and hopefully allow future players to learn from international class about their methods and skills.
-
First round of the uni games started today, Northants looking in a bit of a pickle at 119/4 against Cambridge however they look like they're starting to dig out of it whilst Carberry is 1 run off a 100 at nearly a run a ball.
-
I bet Kent pay loads for all their management, analysts etc etc
I can deny the analyst is on a big wage the other management staff who knows.
-
My Uni's (Cardiff) MCC game is delayed... Hopefully gets underway this afternoon, they gave Glamorgan a good game last week in the one-dayer! Should have beaten them really!
-
Anyone heading to the first day of any of the opening games this Sunday?
Hampshire been struck by the news that both Jackson Bird and Andre Adams are out for at least the first game. typical given they were brought in to bolster the bowling attack that was considered our weak point :(. 18 year old South African born Brad Wheal possibly set to make his debut apparently, supposed to be pretty quick from what I've heard.
-
certainly not sunday as that's match day but I'm going to New Road on Monday and Wednesday. Then to watch KP at Glamorgan the following Mon, Tues and weds. Although, for that game.. It will be weather nad KP dependant.. ie if he bats on sunday then I won't go until I think he'll get another go etc. Not there to watch the rest of them, just KP and Sangakkara

Watching Yorkshire's B side? :D
-
Watching Yorkshire's B side? :D
Probably, just want too watch some proper cricket
-
At least you'll be getting Mooen Ali and Senanayake down there with Worcs :D.
-
At least you'll be getting Mooen Ali and Senanayake down there with Worcs :D.
Ali playing?? Winner. And colly
-
And colly
Think you've got the wrong county there mate ;). Should get Pujara though.
-
And future England players in Lees, Rhodes and maybe even Magic Matty Fisher...
-
Think you've got the wrong county there mate ;). Should get Pujara though.
Holy crap, how did I mix up Durham and Yorkers. Dumb (No Swearing Please)
-
All the tosses taken place then, and there actually seems to be decent weather all around :o.
KP down at 4 on Surreys team sheet today who are batting first v Oxford for those interested.
-
Ah the anticipation. As it stands each team has the title in their own hands, the sun is shining, life is good.
-
Some good players in county cricket this year.
Shame Jackson Bird is injured and misses first game for Hampshire.
Lots of good overseas players playing - Voges, Philander, Rehmann, Hastings, Magoffin, Senanayake, Pujara etc
-
Sean Ervine opening the bowling for Hampshire in division 1 ??? :o :-[.
First wicket of the season a duck for Oliver up at Worcs.
-
Pietersen at the Wicket as Surrey two down for 40.
-
Who's got philander?
-
Who's got philander?
Notts
-
Pietersen on 47 not out at lunch from just 58balls. While Surrey are actually struggling on 122 for 5.
Cricinfo not giving much away. So unsure if the pitch is a minefield. Oxford are bowling well. Or the Surrey batsmen gave it away.
But kp moving along nicely.
-
Pietersen is going along nicely, i think generally the parks is quite a bowling pitch and playing with a few of them in uni they aren't too bad so not surprise that surrey is in kinda a bit of trouble.
-
Whittaker won't be happy to hear that.
-
50 for Pietersen, england call up?lolz
-
Guptill still in T20 mode. I know Derby are only playing Cambridge MCCU but he just loves pumping average bowling!
Retired on 161 off 108 balls.
-
100 for KP.
Pitch doesn't look great from what Skysports news has shown. Makes breaking news as well. ECB won't like that!
Brendon Taylor already in the runs, quality player!
-
Kp to ton and then accelerated with a few 4s. Shouldn't have to retire either with Surrey 5 down.
-
Myburgh made the first ton of the season for somerset already lolz
-
Kp to 150 in 138 balls.
Flying now. Wilson backing him up well with a half century to. Oxford bowlers tiring?
-
Pietersen falls for 170. Good start to the season.
-
Some may say it was only Oxford Uni, but bearing in mind how the rest of the top order did, that is a pretty good marker to throw down in your first knock of the season.
-
It won't hit the headlines, but Brendan Taylor batted superbly for his hundred on debut today at Lords. Glorious day in the sun, chanceless until the end as others struggled around him. Could well be a contender for top run scorer by the seasons end.
-
That's a good knock from KP
Those wickets are not the best batting tracks
-
You can only score runs against the attack in front of you. It isn't his fault Surrey are scheduled to play Oxford MCCU. A hundred is still a hundred and you've still got to score them.
-
You can only score runs against the attack in front of you.
Many of those who comment on ECB posts on Facebook would beg to differ :D.
-
It was only against a club side s mccu's aren't much cop but still, kp ton makes the ECB look dafter still.. Good story for those guys at that uni to tell back in club cricket in the future
-
As a Yorkie, not an ideal start for Pujara, was relying on him for some heavy runs with what looked like a weakened batting line up, thank god for Bresnan
-
Cheteshwar Pujara has gone from being the 'new Rahul Dravid' to laughing stock within 12 months. Typical Indian hype-job
-
Pujara, got out early in his first game for Derbyshire last year then went big. one knock doesnt make you world class
-
Cheteshwar Pujara has gone from being the 'new Rahul Dravid' to laughing stock within 12 months. Typical Indian hype-job
Not sure if you even know what this sport is.... Such moronic comments just crack me up... Sure BCCI is getting a cut from Pujara's county contract... fool!
-
Why would the bcci get a cut?
-
How seriously annoying is it as a Yorkshire fan sat watching the test match while 4 players are warming the bench?!
-
How seriously annoying is it as a Yorkshire fan sat watching the test match while 4 players are warming the bench?!
and a fifth is unjustly suspended for the crime of calling a spade a spade? The ECB have tried to shaft us for years, this is only the latest step...
-
On which subject, it was interetsing to hear that James Whitaker was very impressed with ALex Lees yesterday - he noted his firm wrists and suggested they'd be perfect for holding a tray with Cookie's G'n'T on it...
-
Somerset... Why do I always believe in you so much?
-
Somerset... Why do I always believe in you so much?
know that feeling! well, not about Zummerzet...
-
Sussex surprisingly don't enforce the follow on v Hampshire and a few extra quick wickets may keep Hampshire in the game with a very distant chance. Hopefully that was our 1 collapse of the season in the 1st innings.
-
Good start to the season for Durham so far! Colly rolling back the years.
-
Come on Yorkshire!
-
Come on Yorkshire!
It was all looking so promising for Worcs too... >:(
-
Somerset need to roll Durham for under 130, can't see us doing it but game on!
-
Finch carried of in the ipl with a torn hamstring. Does that mean yorkshire need another pro this summer? Or will maxwell play red ball cricket?
-
Finch carried of in the ipl with a torn hamstring. Does that mean yorkshire need another pro this summer? Or will maxwell play red ball cricket?
Ouch, bad times for the lad
-
Yeah not great. Wonder if it will cost him ipl play if he can't play again?
Anyway yorkshire b team win by 10 wickets at worcester.
-
Finch carried of in the ipl with a torn hamstring. Does that mean yorkshire need another pro this summer? Or will maxwell play red ball cricket?
I hope they'll stick Maxwell in - he actually fits the shape of the Yorkshire squad better than either Finch or Pujara (we hardly need top order players when we have Lyth, Lees, Root, Gale, Balance, Bairstow, Leaning, Will Rhodes but an attacking number six and second spinner would be useful as all hell)
-
Carberry (71* (80)) given Hampshire a flying start to get them 133/1 needing another 245 to pull off a surprising win from our precarious first innings situation and a good return to division 1.
-
And he gets out as I post it :(.
-
And he gets out as I post it :(.
Cursed him 😜
-
Cursed him 😜
Typical of me, post it and a mini collapse ensues! Still praying we can pull off the final 200 odd runs for the last 6 wickets today.
-
Anyone following the Sussex score? Matt Machan going mad...
-
I see Sanga taken to English country bowling like a duck to water.
Classy player
-
This lad might get himself a recall back to Lancs after this knock....
https://twitter.com/liaml4893/status/589811403646709760
-
Hales into the 200s against yorkshire
-
So pleased for Hales-he should be given a run in tge one day stuff for England
And Surrey benefitting from some class in their batting line up
-
Pujara to 50.
philander not having a great impact.
-
philander not having a great impact.
Must only be in the team to meet the quota system, oh wait ;)

I heard about this. How big is the ground where they were playing?
-
Some debate about the 'real' record score in a club game.my mate reckons shazad malik in 2005 got 403 no off 137 balls in 2005...
To be fair id be happy with that for the saturday season.
Not sure if the a ove is actually true bit nothing gets passed the experts on this forum
Shazad malik was a reserve test player and playing for a club called langleybury...allegedley :)
-
Finch out for 3 months
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32412272 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32412272)

Hales passes 500 FC runs for the season already with another 100!
-
Hales passes 500 FC runs for the season already with another 100!
Another top knock, this time against my side!
#AlexHalesForEngland
-
Hales with a great start!
All runs at 3 though. So can we expect him to open in tests with similar results. Or is it to much?
-
Also worth noting Hales has changed bat sponsor since the World Cup!
Just goes to show, if things aren't going your way - buy another bat!
-
Kp fell to Jesse ryder for 32
-
Kp fell to Jesse ryder for 32
Was also dropped before that in his 20s.
-
Hales with a great start!

why would they pick him when they havent selected Lyth or Rashid in West Indies, championship performances dont mean anything apparently
-
Forum discussion previously. Doesn't mean england have any interest in them. Although sky sports have been saying "hales pushes for test call"
Speaking of hales. He got 94 today. Not another ton mind. But a productive game for hales and his prolific season continues.
Not bad for someone sent on loan last year.
-
116 to win for Durham with 7 wickets in hand, hopefully they can chase this down!
-
53 for Lyth on return for Yorkshire whilst Bairstow appears to be prepping for the t20s...
Not looking great for us (Hampshire) given we're already a captain/opener and keeper down :(.
-
And a duck for Rashid.
-
100 for kp
-
100 for kp
150 yet?? :) :) :)
Still, for ECB supporters Cook is the saviour
-
KP currently 167no
-
Only been dropped 3 times ;).
-
More importantly the twin towers at edgbaston. Wright and rankin both past 50. Put the pears to the sword!! 400+ ahead. 4 sessions to roll them.
-
I wonder if mr graves is in attendance? KP spoke really well on sky ipl the other day, was impressed by him.
-
it's a big ton from KP
Not sure if he's available for the NZ series, I read he is being recalled for the IPL....
Anyway, he is in the runs. Anyone else wondering what Strauss will say if the press conference tomorrow? bit of a no win situation...if he says 'everyone has moved on' it's sour grapes, if he says 'everyone is available' then he would be going against his own instincts,we all know what he thinks of him.....
interesting!
-
Turned it into 200!
Been a pleasure to watch it at the oval
-
Kp double ton up. Well batted that man.
-
200 for the c###
Wonder if the doos will take notice now... :D ;)
-
If they don't at least consider picking him now then they never will.
How anyone can ignore 200+ is beyond me, lets hope Groves has had some influence on Strauss!
-
I feel a recall is on it's way for Kevin
-
HE AINT FINISHED YET.
With his old mucker Tremlett on 30 no he is heading towards 250. Incidentally I have seen Tremlett up close and his is the biggest human on the planet-he is massive!!
I wonder in the history of cricket if there has ever been a cricketer who splits opinion so much by the fans.. I can't think of one.
The way the ECB are conducting themselves thou support 'on the ground' is gathering.....KP has some press on side to.
-
KP puts himself in the legendary bracket that includes the likes of Gareth Roderick, Steven Davies, Jimmy Adams, Garry Wilson and Alex Gidman to have scored over 150 against Gloucestershire in the last 12 months alone ;).
-
The shots are really coming out now! Practising for the t20 blast/ipl here.
Getting better and better as the innings is going. 241*
-
Leicestershire, Sam... Runs are runs though, even if dropped 4 times.
-
Leicestershire, Sam... Runs are runs though, even if dropped 4 times.
Oops, that's the one :D. Just playing devils advocate ;).
-
Leicestershire, Sam... Runs are runs though, even if dropped 4 times.
This is KP, we know he's got the class to cut it at the top level. He was just out of form. Runs against anyone, especially 250 of them just shows he's coming back into form.
If it was an unknown kid you'd say maybe he needs to prove himself against better bowling. But we know what an in form KP can do...
-
where he gonna bat in our test line up ???
Opener slot open not much else ago maybe a 6 too 1,3,5 taken for sure
He s unlikely to get a go I would have thought
-
Now has his best first class score. Also his 50th hundred
-
where he gonna bat in our test line up ???
Opener slot open not much else ago maybe a 6 too 1,3,5 taken for sure

He knows himself that he is unlikely to be considered for the NZ tests - Cook, probably Lyth, Balance, Bell , Root is nailed on and the lack of a world class spinner means we need either Stokes or Ali at 6.
If someone fails, he could be in with a shot - if necessary Ali could open, albeit badly.
-
where he gonna bat in our test line up ???

Might get a t20 slot... Not an Alastair in sight there.
-

Hopefully he bats between the two sets of stumps! I really don't care what number, get the lad in the side!
Get Root opening, slot KP in at 4 and move Bell down to 5.
Simples ;)
-
Might get a t20 slot... Not an Alastair in sight there.
He might get an ODI gig too, Morgan apparently wanted him in the side (something Eoin probably was contractually obliged to deny!)
-
He's just range hitting now. Ridiculous shot making! 360 hitting!
300 looks on the cards. Chance for 400?
-
KP to score more than the whole Leicestershire team anyone?
I'm calling it now, he'll get to 300 and they'll declare
-

All rests in the hands of matt dunn ;)
-
Scores level - sort of! :D

It's only day 2. Why declare?
Bat to dinner tomoz. Kp on 500.....a nd them bowl them out in the 5 sessions left.
-
Kp in beast mode!!!! 300 up
-
300 up for KP, quality knock.
If he was selfish he could give Matt Dunn the strike now and help himself to Red Ink
-
The 10th wicket partnership. Goes passed 100.
Pietersen now having hit 13 sixes. In his 318*
-
I did wonder why this topic was suddenly getting posted to! Just started a KP for England thread (kind of).
-
Kp ends the day 326 not out. What a knock to watch. Glad they didn't declare. Hope he gets to that 400 tomorrow
What a way to send a message to strauss. I'm sure kp found it amusing at every milestone the crowd chanting "are you watching Strauss"
-
In fairness,,, Leicestershire are crap.. But then so are the WI who cook scored against.. Least KP scored the runs he should against such opposition
-
given how the next highest score is 36 its a decent knock
-

as the saying goes - you've still got to score 'em

Highlights of his knock
Some very dejected bowlers in those highlights, but not a lot you can do when he is in that kind of form
-
Dunn falls. Kp gets his Red ink on 355.
-
Think it will be his last FC knock now. Don't see any motivation for him to carry on playing the 4 day game.
Might as well earn more money playing t20 and becoming a commentator.
-
Surrey currently blasting their way to victory (hopefully) at the oval in a remarkable match http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/o38023 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/o38023) Anyone else think Steven Davies would be a good addition to the England one day set up? His name hasn't been mentioned much of late but he's been in good form so far this year..
-
Why didn't KP bat?
-
Why didn't KP bat?
no point?? Not int he right mind set??
Check out tomorrows papers all you ECB supporters.. disgraceful
-
Why didn't KP bat?
Thigh strain.
Good to see Surrey pull off a heist. They've flattered to deceive for too long.
-

No bowling attack. Always struggle to take 20 wickets, particularly at the Oval.
Tremlett is not the bowler we remember, Dunn/Ansari/Curran have a lot to learn, Batty does a holding job.
Excellent knock from Davies and Roy though, should set them up nicely for the T20 Friday evening.

Fair summary. Much a shame that Meaker has been ECBed and that George Edwards came to naught.
-
Fair summary. Much a shame that Meaker has been ECBed and that George Edwards came to naught.
Should be fun to see Wahab Riaz for two games. Hopefully he picks up where he left off with Shane Watson!
There's always Dernbach though...
-
Dernbach's not a bad bowler. Got some ticker too.
-
Dernbach's injured, as is Tremlett now. Meaker is apparantly spraying the ball all over the shop in the 2s. Dunn is a wicket taker but far too expensive, if he tightens up he's got the attributes to be a high quality fast bowler. Tom Curran will do well.
-
Assume Tim Linley is injured too? Surely he's the cure for their woes here,, bit of gentle medium accuracy, in the mould of Dave Masters & Steve Patterson.
-
without the wickets
-
without the wickets
Fair point, but he did do well in i think it was 2012? And unfortunately he's picked the wrong county to be a wobbly seam bowler at, having to play half his games at the Oval!
Tbh, i would guess they'll just prepare The Oval to be even more spin friendly from now on, what with Seamers falling like flies and Ansari & Batty doing the business at the moment.
-
Linley's on the comback from injury. We've also got David Balcombe waiting in the wings
-
Assume Tim Linley is injured too? Surely he's the cure for their woes here,, bit of gentle medium accuracy, in the mould of Dave Masters & Steve Patterson.
Yes.. Some. Ore dilly dobbley county cricket bowlers,,, just what we want to see produced :(

If he's effective does it matter?
I would like to sight one Mr Vernon Philander, and name him King of the Dibbly Dobbly. With his Prime Minister to be Matthew Hoggard.
You're forgetting that Glenn McGrath was barely above medium towards the end of his career and he was just as effective as when he had a bit about him. It's not all about pace.

Let's look around the world now generally and think about how many of these types are any use.. McGrath was a metronome, not exactly something that'll happen often. Philanderer hasn't been effective since that start.

and a history of going AWOL on good batting decks, injuries at the last minute. I know the Aussies thought this.

His overseas record is extremely limited but what strikes me is it's heavily boosted by NZ and one performance (at Lords if I remember) against England. He's only played 2 tests in Aus and 2 in Sri Lanka, and got a bit of stick with bowling averages of 49 and 76. Will be interesting to see in another 30 tests where he is after trips to Asia/Aus.

Statistics can be misleading if the sample isn't big enough (love the youtube video though).
That all said, CC is a different animal and until global warming kicks in (please) we will always have trundlers.
-
Fair point Nick. But citing the Aussie press? ;)
I think he's a good bowler. And his stats, whatever they're worth, are far too good over nearly 30 Tests to say that he's overrated. Everyone has places where they're fantastic and vice versa.
-
Problem solved for Surrey.
They've taken Big Fletch on Loan from Notts. Excellent move there, i rate him pretty highly as a county bowler.
Also he gives us big lads hope of being pros!
-
Hampshire currently having Middlesex in all sorts of trouble with the bat this evening. Joe Burns looking a bit uneasy apparently, hopefully we can keep up the pressure and record our first win.
18 year old South Africa born FC debutant Brad Wheal took his first wicket in Sam Robson, appears to have been fast-tracked to the 1st team and is supposed to be pretty quick
-
Anyone heading to a t20 match tonight then? Going to the Hants came again which I think is the one being televised.
-
Yorkshire win!! Not sure Notts ever had enough runs and are probably Rueing hales bench warming in the ipl.
Maxwell with a half decent start. 4 overs. A run out. And a few sixes in his 20 of 12.
Gayle with the match winning 50. Come on yorkshire!!!!!!!!
-
Kent rebuild from our (Hants) great start with Northeast and Alex Blake, @ProCricketer1982 's favourite county clubby, rebuilding and taking us apart towards the end. Shame given the explosive start Vince and Carberry gave us.

Alex Blake of Kent, was the televised game, just a little joke given he was the guy you used as an example that shouldn't have a contract last season :D.

Haha, good on him
-
Usual poor game selection from sky for tonight's t20 blast. Derby vs Lancs ahead of Essex vs somerset
-
Gayle making a mockery of the t20 blast, 92 the other day and 100+ today.
Again not being shown on tv! The only front line t20 tournament where they don't broadcast every game. Time to put some of these t20 games back on freeview tv
-
Got tickets down to Taunton this Friday, in 2 minds, want to see an entertaining innings alongside a Hampshire win :D. Bet he's loving the likes of Chelmsford and Taunton so far!
On that note does anyone have any tips for parking in Taunton on a Friday evening?
-
Kent win despite 151 of 62 balls from gayle!
KP fails for surrey

Thanks, will hopefully speed me up given I'll provably be in a rush to get in :).
All England players except Anderson and Wood being released over this weekend apparently with sky televising a game every evening/afternoon from Thursday through to Sunday

Well played Leicester.
Essex you are a shower.
-
Brilliant hitting from Ervine and Shah there at the end, taken it up to a much higher total than looked likely!
-
Runs for Cook and bell going past 100
-
Squeaky bum time for Scummerset down in Taunton.... 20 needed chasing 400+, 8 down.
-
Bit of good news around the gloom our lad Greame Wagg just smacked 200 his career highest score against Surrey.
-
When did Somerset sign Bates?
Really glad he's got another county gig, best young gloveman I've seen live.
-
Bates has been with Somerset since the start of the season I think. Played some 2's and minor counties with Wiltshire
-

I didn't know he'd been with them all season.
I thought he'd been training with Essex over the winter. I know he'd been playing some minor counties stuff.
-
Not a single caught behind for him all game! Assume that was through a lack of opportunities.
-
Had some trial games with the seconds, but just signed up this week for a month.
-
He's been playing club cricket for Oxford. They have a handy backup though - Ryan Carters of NSW...

Yorkshire!!!
Maxwell fired last night. 92* from 48 balls Anley supported by hodd with 70. As Yorkshire put on 204.
Patel with an unbeaten 88 in reply but notes struggled to keep up with rate.
-
Bmac attack!! 158 of 64balls for Birmingham

No mention of your Yorkshire be a good game this i think

Think it will be close if Finchy and co get going

Prefer finchs red and white to his new red and yellow stickers!!
You got a stack of them in corner?
-
Wondering if anyone's heard much over the t20 franchise talk that's risen in the last week or so for the 2017 season?
-
Hampshire vs Glamorgan. One day cup.
Carberry took one to face.
Adams just took one to the face of a length that despite hitting the grill, shattered his stemguard to many pieces(how safe are they)
Umps look like there about to abandon this(both captains on and chatting with them)
-
Match abandoned!!!
-
Embarrassing that pro's are playing on a pitch like this!
The price being charged for a stem guard is a bit much if it didn't survive an impact to the front grill!
-
May not be the only game on a poor pitch.
Worcester got a hat trick first 3 balls of gamebefore having Northants 13 for 6.
They thought back to 127.
Worcester 48 for 6 in reply......

Bit farcial if we only get 1 point for that now. Bad enough that a test ground can have a pitch like that.

I wonder if/how they will be punished for producing this pitch. As I think they had 2 points deducted for something similar last year, would their punishment be more harsh now as it is their second offence?
It is completely unacceptable though, and as shown was genuinely dangerous.
-
It was the same pitch they used on Friday, where they had no issues.
-
The price being charged for a stem guard is a bit much if it didn't survive an impact to the front grill!
They only clip on don't they? I imagine the impact just unclipped it rather than damaged it
-

It snapped in half and bits came off it. Did you not watch the vid?
-
It looked like the impact on the grille flexed it enough for the stem guard to pop off or the clips to break, and the side where it hit then came loose. It's not a rigid structure per se. It's a flexible cushioning device with "impact cells" to reduce the impact. The thin piece of plastic linking the two sides isn't rigid.

I did watch the video but there's 2 problems.
1) my eyes aren't very good
2) I only watched it on my phone so it wasn't a huge screen
-
Watching root play with his mid test it looked no wear near as flexible as this one Appeared To be after impact.
Impressed with the grill strength though. Adams just had the look of wtf
-
Morgan "rested" for the next four games due to poor form!
-
Just showed the ball that lead to the game being abandonned on the local news.
Is Adams no longer sponsored by GM?

He was definitely still using them earlier in the season, can't remember when he stopped.

Yorkshire beat Durham to extend lead to 50 points.
Looking comfortable at the moment, got a good balanced side and doing well.

Maxwells runs in the one day side get him back in the championships side?
He had been playing 2nd team cricket even after finch had gone home.
But 2 fifties and a ton in the cup and he was back in the 4 day team and it proved pivotal.
His 140 and a record partnership with rashid probably won/saved us that game!
-
Hampshire will hopefully ,weather dependent, get a win tomorrow against Warwickshire to keep our hopes of staying up alive.
-
David willey just smashed Northants to finals day!
100 from 40 balls, 10 sixes and 7 fours.
Falls on the 41st ball though.
Northants need 29 from 54 to proceed
-
That was some crazy hitting. Looks like weather is going to do its best to ruin the next 2 games which is a pain given I've got tickets to Fridays QF.
-
The yardy over was destruction.
646666
Shame the four bounced only 2 feet from the boundary to!

By all accounts that was Yardy's last over in professional T20 cricket. Got to feel sorry for the bloke!

I've got the afternoon off work on Monday and a free ticket to the Ageas Bowl.
Hopefully it's a decent game and day out :D
-
Just seen that Leicestershire have been deducted 16 points due to 5 reports of dissent to umpires/opposition players in the past 12 month! That is some punishment!
-
bonkers - Worcester play a cheating bowler who chucks it and they get promoted. Leicester have a strop and lose all the points from one of their only wins in 5 years.
that's fair.

More to do with last season though, I highly doubt they'd have got in the position they were in without him before he got banned for chucking at some crazy flexing angle.

I'm not doubting he's got a dubious action btw... Just that he's been cleared so as it stands.. Isn't a chest. Unlike the guys who take money for no balls being allowed back playing etc.
-
Great ton from Vince. Excellent innings. Wasn't Willet good but not far off.
Can Worcester chase down 195?? Will Ali make big on his little release from tests?
-
Or they could just go off for bad light... :-[
-
Yeah. This is why we aren't the ipl or bbl.
We allow mid August games to start at 5.30 at a ground with no floodlights!
Should have put money on bad light stops play! #amatuerhour

What happens now??
-
What happens now??
Hampshire go through on the old Lewis and worthduck method.
-
Not the most entertaining way for us to get through but at least we're there, time to buy t20 finals day tickets for the 6th year in a row!
-
Am I missing something here or have they just tried to play an evening game without floodlights?
-
Am I missing something here or have they just tried to play an evening game without floodlights?
Yes they have. (Sigh) yes they have
-
Well that's staggering, I guess Sky have had a hand in this but what did they think was going to happen?
How miffed must the players be too, all those group games and you go out without being able to finish the quarter final, crazy stuff.
-
Am I missing something here or have they just tried to play an evening game without floodlights?
5.30 start compared to the usual 6.30/7. Works OK earlier in the season but when you get an overcast evening like tonight at this time it's not going to go down greatly.
-
Bet they won't make that mistake again. Complete farce for a QF.
The t20 blast continues to be a Micky mouse tournament
-
They could have carried on though. I cant believe Wood didnt see the ball when he ran around the boundary got both hands to it, shelled it and it hit him in the face.
Don't get me wrong, it was stupidly dark but Nasser and Thorpe in Pakistan anyone?
-
Just realised the womens ashes test was probably the cause of this game being played tonight, if Canterbury hadn't been booked up with it for the week you assume Worcester being the ground without floodlights would've been given the day game which Kent now have tomorrow.
-

I think you are spot on here. Why they out a 5:15 start at a ground with no lights in mid August is beyond me. It would never have been light enough past 7:30 for cricket

Interesting BBC article....
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/33732235 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/33732235)
Any opinions on these guys? I've seen Curran a few times and think he could be the real deal. Sibley needs a good consistent run.
-
Both the Curran boys are decent. Tom has a terrible barnet though, needs to sort that out if he ever hopes to make it as an international. Both are Zimbabwe born though no?
-
There are 3 Curren boys, they youngest is a batsman and will be the best of the lot.
Then again if you have Tom and Sam bowling at you in the garden, you would be a useful bat if you want to bat for any length of time
Church on Surrey radio has to spend more time discussing Tom's topknot than anything to do with the cricket. He is always asked about it by the other commentators...!!
-
There is a big hair issue though. Lovely lads - very good with my son when he was there a couple of times recently.
Sam is ridiculously young. Terrifying. Is the youngest on Surrey's books as well?
This may be tangential from the topic but I wonder how many of those lads were private schoolboys? I know it could be skewed by the fact that if you're handy you'll be getting a scholarship and 11/13/16 but I would be interested in people's thoughts, mainly from a selfish level.
My son is just eight is potentially shaping up to be a decent sportsman/boy (playing U11s cricket at 7 and going well this year, sub 20min 5k, good club swimmer and a very handy rugby player) and at the moment it's with a heavy heart that I'll have to tout him round the local private schools to find somewhere where he can get a chance to realise his potential, which is a shame. I know lots can change in the next couple of years but I need to get planning. And saving.

I wouldn't worry too much about private schooling. Make sure you get him into a club with a good academy and make sure he's available for area games etc. Steve Finn went to Parmiter's school which is a state school and he's not done too bad for himself.
-
Surrey seem to have a great crop of real youngsters coming through. A mate of mine plays in their 2XI and is a phenominal talent, but is still behind the likes of Sibley and the asian opening laddie for a place in the ones. He's only 16 I think, but says he;s already mixed with Sanga, Mahmood, Batty, Meaker etc, and that the attitude towards the 'young 'uns' there is really good.
-
I'm hoping Gubbins and Ravi Patel at Middx break through, as I think both of those deserve a run.
The likes of Malan, Stirling, Rayner etc ought to be looking over their shoulders!

I'm not sure private school is the be all and end all like TangoWhiskey alluded to, Steven Finn attended a state school as did Ben Stokes (same school as I went to!) and I'm sure there's others who have too.
-
Exactly. I would suggest the myth behind private school boys getting selected ahead of state school boys would be more to do with the fact that as Cricket isn't played in State school the kids lose interest in it. If you keep him playing at all opportunities I can't see why he would be held back at all.
-
As a PE teacher in a state school I disagree fully and would deffo be sending my kid to private school if they were talented!
-

Exactly right, like I said Stokes went to the same school as me and came up through my local club and I'm from a VERY small town and the club's not exactly massive 3 Senior teams (just) and then age group teams 11s 13s and 15s if memory serves.

Interesting, always good to get an opinion from someone more directly involved. Seems unfair that finances could potentially make or break our kids' futures but ain't that life!

It's hardly something new, or restricted to sport, unfortunately.
-

My school played a rather large (and expensive) private school in a fixture a few weeks ago. We turned up to an outstanding ground with top facilities with tea prepared. Upon talking to the players they practiced with a successful county cricketer two hours per day. We on the other hand have an astro turf pitch between football pitches and I am lucky if I can get 40 minutes per week at lunch time to practice with my kids!
As it happens the game was quite close but I think having those facilities and coaches on hand could certainly make the difference to a talented kid. Also, no matter how much you debate it, a recommendation from the head of cricket at a private school to a county is worth more than me having a quiet chat with a county coach. Kids can certainly flourish in state school but there's no way they'll receive the same opportunities sadly.

"He attended King Ecgbert School, Sheffield and at 15 on a cricket sports scholarship, Worksop College in Worksop as a weekly boarder.[2]"
Guess it just depends how important you think those last 3/4 years were. Although i don't doubt he would have done the business anyway.
-
Private school will produce more players because it brings out the talent far more regularly, if the same quality goes to each, then I'd back the private one to make it more often than the state one. Does t stop you of course but the teaching, the facilities, the time, the discipline (both ofmthenschool, teacher and kids ) are all far superior at private schools
-
Oh I've no doubt that opportunities are easier to come by in private education I was merely pointing out my belief that with hard work and determination (and obviously the talent) it's possible to achieve almost anything you could dream of from almost any kind of background.
-
Having worked in fee paying schools and FE cricket academy there's far far more opportunity for cricket development at private school as already mention better coaching from a top player coach who has been there and done it plus facilities time allowed for practice with coach on a one to one own ground with all the facilities. FE academy two hours per week during term time with ex county player coach for the whole squad brought in for the session indoor league during the winter league ground rented for matches one afternoon per week during term time.
-

it is possible, but a lot less likely
-
Obviously private schools are better at education, sports and providing opportunities... That's kind of the point!
Cracking QF between Glos and Hants tonight in Bristol, couple of top knocks from Jimmy Adams and Klinger and a nice tight finish. Carberry got a 3 ball working over from James Fuller and a blob.
-
Couldn't quite believe the game I watched at the Oval last night with that 10th wicket 'partnership' of 63 with Matt Coles scoring 100. They were chasing 251 off 40 overs, were 169-9 (it was 73-6 at one point) and then he just went off on one, just smashing anything the Surrey seamers threw at him. Dernbach's second spell, welp, then Batty brought himself in and got knocked off one over for 17. It took nearly 40 minutes before the other guy at the crease Matt Hunn faced a delivery!
Honestly thought with 2 overs to spare and chasing 20 or so that Surrey were going to throw it but they pulled through, just about. Still can't believe it happened.
-
Does anyone think Coles deserves to be considered for England again? I know he got sent home from a Lions tour for boozing with Stokes but there's no doubt he's a talented lad.
-
talented, but is he international class? he doesn't get above 80 with the ball, has average fitness levels and is fairly....rustic in his methods...
-

Yeah I'm not sure if he is either, I was just wondering what people thought, just with him being on Lions tours in the past I figured they must have seen something in him they liked.
-
Some game last night - I am a little frustrated that Notts are meeting Surrey in the semi final - they have been the 2 best sides in the comp and make a worthy final - plus it is likely that Hales, Taylor and Roy won't be able to play due to England duties which puts a dent in the quality.
Matt Coles for England? urm not sure it is likely to happen!! But that switch hit he played as astonishing!!
-

Dude, you cannot complain about having one or two players away when Yorkshire are winning the championship easily with their second XI!
-
Do we reckon England will let root play in the semi??
-
Dude, you cannot complain about having one or two players away when Yorkshire are winning the championship easily with their second XI!
Ha no, that isn't what I meant, although it is damming on the standard of the championship when a virtual 2nd team can win the pennant.
What I meant was that I would rather see all the best players on display. From a Surrey perspective, the loss of Roy isn't as bad as the loss of Hales and Taylor for Notts
-

Damning on the other eight teams, yes. Or indiciative of the might of the white rose.... :D
But I do agree that England - if they are not to move from behind a paywall - need to make sure that their best and most marketable players - Root, Stokes, Anderson, Broad, Hales, Ali and Buttler - play as much for their counties as they possibly can. It raises the standard, yes - but more importantly, it gives the casual viewer or kid one more reason to go to a game and thereafter to get properly involved in the game...
-
All the England players should be available for the big games. They should all be available at the same times.
I'm not sure if it's realistic, but I'd like to see the end to counties flying in overseas players for just a few games.
Clubs and teams should have identity and soul. This is where the humble county game has the edge. I'm enough of a romantic to believe kids could still fall in love with this.
-
I'm not sure if it's realistic, but I'd like to see the end to counties flying in overseas players for just a few games.
This is the big one for me - there are too many players playing two or three weeks. Accepting that not everyone can play the whole season, the way around this is to say that teams have one or at most two overseas registrations for the year and can use no more than that.
-
Couldn't quite believe the game I watched at the Oval last night with that 10th wicket 'partnership' of 63 with Matt Coles scoring 100.
I've only just found out that this happened! I was at the game, but left when it rained. Even then (23-2?), I couldn't see Kent getting close. When I got home I did little more than check Surrey had won.

Yeah, I'm gonna get miserable if I have to rewatch that again

Sangakarra with a fantastic 166 in the semifinal between Surrey and notts!!
-
And all the rest of the team doing awfully!
If you take out extras as well, everyone else got 118 from 27 overs, hence them posting 'only' 300.
-
They did better than the notts top order are doing.
The School boy is on a hat trick!
-
YES SURREY YES. What a season.

Sangakarra with a fantastic 166 in the semifinal between Surrey and notts!!
Was a very good old school knock up until the fortieth over when KS went disco. I think he changed his bat 4 times too.
The best thing about the game was the blooming boundaries were out all the way,so players had to use their brains as well as their brawn. Great game and managed to scratch the 'See Sanga score a hundred live' line from my bucket list.
-
Yorkshire v Hampshire CC currently on sky if anyone missed it,
-
Hampshire look to be taking it carefully! Can't blame them really! If you try to go too hard against Yorkshire, they can spank you!
Would like to see Hampshire win (my birth place) but is normally a tough ask!

Sanga is a TOP player..

Probably the brightest and best conditions there's been all day and the close is called :-[.

Yorkshire in a tad of trouble at 62/4 after Hampshires first innings score of 400.
-
Yorkshire to win the County Championship and the T20
I have no idea who will win the 50 over stuff, such a hit and miss competition in my view...
Called Yorkshire winning the CC back in March :D

Can someone please explain why we loaned Dawson out earlier this season... He's been our best batsman this season and made a big ton against the champions.
As a Hampshire fan the decision making has been a joke this year. Hopefully we stay this season and actually perform as we're capable of in the championship next year.

He was making constant 30 odds without pushing on before he went out on loan and the after the short time away seemed to come back much better with both bat and ball.

Yorkshires hangover is massive!
Both lyth and ballance not making the England selectees regret there decision(balance was dropped on 9 too)
Rumours ansari gone to hospital with a broken hand too. Maybe England having to find another spinner?

Would Liam Dawson as an extremely similar like for like replacement given he's also just hit some runs on the sky cameras be a bit of a long shot?

I can remember when Liam Dawson burst onto the scene and became Hampshire's youngest ever championship centurion.
I called it back then that he was England bound. Sadly he never lived up to that early potential and I fear his chance has gone now. Would love to see him make the squad though
-
Looking like we're almost certain to go down now after he rain yesterday forced Hants into setting up a game from an extremely good position. Ironic that our hopes now not only rest on us but also on Yorkshire beating Sussex.
-
Brave from Hampshire. But was it needed? Is rain gonna be that bad during the final games?
-
Anybody notice Joe Root's brother Billy made his debut for Notts today?

Sanga with another ton for Surrey, please can he play for us forever...
-
Hampshire need 200 to win now against Notts and Yorkshire need to beat Sussex for us to pull of the great escape!
-
Sign the Curran's to 50 year deals already

Why can't more teams do something like this :

Live stream of the Notts v Hants game.

I hope they do it for you, Sam.
-
Anyone notice Chris Jordan has opened for Sussex this game ???. Maybe he's decided that's the best route back into the England team...
-
The live stream is very random without any commentary or sound to go with it!

Opens the bowling, opens the batting and fields at slip. Village!

he didn't trouble the scorers mind, experiment for last game that hasn't worked

Shame that it can't be delayed slightly so the BBC commentary can be lined up with it.

That what I tried.
Balls wicket I hear don radio, looked up and next batsmen was already at crease. Haha.
-
Hampshire survive! Sussex go down.
Yorkshire marsh on! Just the 1 loss while they had the championship hangover blots there season.
-
Get down to Oval - Surrey to get 215 in 33 overs to win Div2.
Could be fireworks...
Suns out, free entry, if you can blag your way into the pavilion there's bottles of wine going for £6 too.
-
Getting out of work slightly early, come on the Rey. Jumble sale done yet?
-
Roy flying, rest crumbling with bizarre shots.
-
Roy just dealing in sixes. 8 in his 77 of 34 ballad so far.

Anyone else feel a little bit disappointed that they went off when they did?
-
Oh, you're a Surrey fan... ;)
They're bloody great. Might make membership for next year my first payday purchase tomorrow.
Tommy C now in the development camps for winter, excellent.
-
I hope the deal on Curran being picked is that he sorts his hair out!
-
Disaster for Glos - James Fuller has declined a new contract and is leaving. Not entirely surprising after he's bowled like a hero all season, assume he's been offered a contract by a div 1 county.

Just seen that he's signed for Middlesex on a 3 year deal... Big loss for Gloucestershire that.

Essex are going to need to do some serious shopping soon!
Lost Topley, Panesar, Greg Smith, Salisbury, Imtiaz & now Pettini.
Replaced them with Jack Winslade & now also Aaron Beard from the Academy.
Once the new coach is in place, we're in serious need of a decent seamer who is in his prime (not a child or an old cripple), a reserve keeper (as it is literally just Foster now with no back up, not even an emergency keeper in Petini) and probably another spinner (Dockrell maybe?)
Not looking like it's going to be a good season next year at this rate.

why would you take other counties cast offs like Dockerell?? WOUldn't it be better to invest in a real talent like Slurry with Sanga, or Lancs with PRince etc.. OR .. novel idea... actually invest properly in youth systems and produce some actual bloody quality players rather than mediocre crap.
-
Until a year or two ago dockrell was quality. He seemed to just disappear without ever performing badly, I'd be very surprised if no one snapped him up.

Rightho,
Dockrell is the best spinner available at the moment and still has an enormous amount of potential, as can be proven by his perfomances for Ireland - Nijjar needs to learn his craft, and playing every game in every format isn't going to help him achieve that.
Essex have an Overseas player - Jesse Ryder, and he's excellent.
And lastly in your trade of nonsense - Essex do have an excellent academy set up who have produced (in the last 10 years) Cook, Bopara, Topley, Mills, Westley, Varun Chopra, Chris Wright, Jamie Porter &
But you can't lose 6 players and replace them with 2 academy graduates and not expect a severe drop off in results, especially when there's no cover available for injuries, of which Essex seem to have suffered a bloody lot of in recent years.
-
I wonder if Yorkshire might be tempted - Middlebrook is unlikely to want another season, Rashid will spend a lot of time with Team England as a glorified drinks waiter and Carver is a couple of years away from being ready.

+Dan Lawrence and Callum Taylor.
But you'll win nothing with kids ;)
-
Pettini is a serious coup for Leicestershire!!! With Horton (lancs) and Dexter (Middlesex) signed up too it seems as though Andrew Macdonald and Wasim Kahn are finally turning around what was an absolute shambles
-
I still think Dockrell could be an excellent signing for someone, I wish Middlesex would snap him up, but they seem content with an Embury clone.
-
Pettini to Leics was a surprise, you wouldn't think Essex would want to let him go.
agree Dockrell is a very good signing, looks a very good prospect
-

They offered him a new contract, but only really played him in limited over cricket. Leics are offering all 3 formats and a longer contract. I think he played 5 CC games this year (at most) and averaged over 100.
-
It was shame to lose dockerell as he is a player I have always liked but he was down the pecking lost behind leach in CC and waller in t20 plus with rehman as the overseas he didn't get much game time
-
Players starting to be let go by their counties now.
Spot the issue with the bat!

Spyders!!!!
-
Essex never have issues developing players, in fact lots of them go on to have great careers, just at other counties...
They have the biggest catchment area in terms of playing numbers after Yorkshire (I think).
I think Lancahire is second. But I agree with your point.
-
Durham in a right crap position! Two of our brightest prospects in talks to leave! Ryan Pringle had offers from Derbyshire and Northants but has agreed to join Derbyshire and Adam Hickey talking to Essex. Durham have offered Pringle a improved deal to try and change his mind.
First the Muchall fiasco and now two of our best young players talking to Div 2 sides worries me as a Durham fan. Things off the pitch badly effecting us on the pitch.

Forget that Pringle accepted his contract as did Collingwood! And by all accounts Malik is ours next season too!
