Title: What to do about this crack?
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on March 21, 2015, 02:58:06 PM
Hi guys

Following on from Fattus' shower gel thread I thought I'd ask for some advice on a different kind of crack.

I damaged my net bat last night (damn sports direct ball (No Swearing Please)!) and while repairing some feathering I noticed a crack in the toe. It goes about halfway through the toe, through the grains and up the face of the bat.
Any ideas what (if anything) I can do with this?

Cheers Jake, know anywhere that sells SH bats for £25 to replace it?  ;)

As this bat has broken it justifies its purchase as a net bat to my mind! If that had been my SS LE or Master damaged by a cheap ball I'd have throttled the bowler!  :D

I was thinking maybe put a dowel up through the toe to stop it spreading any further and leave the face as it is.

Wack some glue on it then tape with fibre glass or cloth tape and be done, use it until it is bust.

No point in dowling it.

Putting a dowel at the end of the crack should stop the crack spreading to the back. You just have to be sure to drill the hole deep enough to get to the bottom of the crack. Sure there's a good innuendo there but I'm too mature. Can you get a needle into the crack and inject glue?  Nice seam mark though, did you knock it in well enough at the toe?

To dowel or not to dowel is now the question. @Buzz I had planned to use it until it was bust anyway so the aim is to prolong its life as long as possible.

@Gurujames probably not, as it was a net bat I wacked the edges and toe like a bat out of hell until I was bored then started using it. Evidently that wasn't enough (but a fibreglass scuff sheet can hide a multitude of sins!)

Do what Buzz has suggested.

Doweling at the end of the crack increases the chance of stopping the crack spreading further. Glue needs to go into the crack otherwise it is pointless.

With the general opinion being to leave it be I've put a dowel in there!
It went better than perfectly, if I do say so myself.
I put the glue in and then hammered the dowel in, which lead to excess glue coming out of the crack.
I'm keeping it tight while the glue sets but am confident this will seal the crack and prevent it spreading any deeper into the toe of the bat.

A lamitoe may have been a better option.

A lamitoe may have been a better option.

Normally I'd agree, but in this case it would cost more to get that done than the bat cost me!  :-[

Why would you dowl it there???

Dowel i find through the blade but not up that way it will create a weaker point and in time the bat will go through multiple areas across the toe.

The position of that dowel serves no  purpose

That was where the end of the crack is/was. The theory was putting a dowel there would prevent it spreading further through the blade.

But you're the expert so I guess I've wasted a dowel, some glue and the electric for the drill, d'oh!

And as far as it going in multiple areas of the toe, it's already gone in one so I don't care really. It was a cheap bat to prevent a more expensive one getting getting damaged in the winter nets, so in that respect its served its purpose and no longer owes me anything.

Yeah I have to agree there. I would have put it through the other way myself, the only thing I can see the happening the way you did it would be that the dowel forces the crack open wider.

Oh well! It's done now and seems to have sealed the crack.

And like I keep saying, I don't really care as the bat has fulfilled it's purpose, so any additional usage I get from it now is an added bonus.

I think the lamitoe option was the best suggestion - I think you could have some fun with this bat buying some hardwood and fitting it yourself...

The lamitoe option would be worth doing if the bat had cost me more than £25  ;)

I might still see if I can dig the router out and have a go at some stage, it depends how bored I get and how much free time I find myself with. I've got a day off work coming up, I could try and do it then, but may end up spending all day in hospital depending on various things  :-[
