Title: Whats a good ball for indoor training when using a leather ball is not an option
Post by: tushar sehgal on March 23, 2015, 03:49:27 PM
Tried Readers Supaballs (6 of them) yesterday in training for about 2 hrs and by the end of it all 6 were pretty much destroyed and seam on them fully off.

What do you guys recommend we use? obviously when bowling somebody is batting at the other end so the ball needs to be able to handle the punishment without falling apart in 10 mins!! also need to be soft so it does not damage the floor etc and be regular senior weight/bounce.

If not then I suggest bowling machine balls..

Hey Uzair, I am not sure what the weight and bounce is like on these!! have you tried them? we can't really use bowling machine balls as its not a net setup but more an open gym with window's etc that I am sure would be shattered if the ball hits.

Windballs are soft rubber, and very lightweight, for kids/total beginners.

What about incrediballs?

Ah, a supaball is an incrediball. Obviously not a very good one. Can't say i've ever heard of incrediballs failing so early in their life.

I'm not sure there is such a thing.. we're using Kookaburra Indoor yellow balls.. when new almost feel like normal cricket balls but after 2-4 hours of being smacked around against  walls and radiators.. they all seem to start showing damage .. I think probably good to last between 8-10 hours though...

I guess it depends on what sort of Indoor facility you're using...

Tush I see where you come from.

These would be apt but windows are a worry. For them, can't they be covered anyhow? If its a basketball court then you can take wall padding off (behind the backboard on the wall) and put in front of the windows so they don't break?

Machine balls won't be good either. I haven't used them @tushar sehgal but saw them once and held them. So, can't really comment how they play etc.

I've fouuse nd that both Incrediballs and the similar other brands of that type don't last more than a session without coming apart at the seams. Windballs are more resilent but the bounce isn't realistic, far too high. Now we use Readers Indoor balls which last and have a decent bounce, they are quite hard though.

If this is a school gym, yellow indoor balls should do perfectly fine. They're used in every high school in the GTA.

I think the unfortunate reality here is cricket balls, whether match balls or softer training balls are not really designed to be smashed into brick walls etc too often.

The Readers indoor ball suggested is probably the best option. I have played indoor cricket with one of these and whilst pretty hard, it shouldn't break a window installed in a gym (which i assume is some sort of reinforced or toughened safety glass?)

I don't have experience of the tiflex indoor ball but could easily get you some.

Haven't used the tiflex indoor balls myself but I know an indoor league I play in will be switching to them next winter, lads there have used them in BUCS and seem to rate them well, so could be worth a go.

Readers indoor last well, but that's about all they have going for them. No seam for the bowlers, and I'd definitely invest in a net bat! Would also back them to go through a window if hit hard, made a few big dents in sports hall walls playing with them before.

Thanks guys, will look at both the readers indoor and tiflex option. Bit of a disadvantage for the bowlers but if you are practising bowling hours and line/lenght then swing/seam can be overlooked. As for batsman they are using proper match bats as this year we have lost our only net facility so this gym is the best option we have left to work on handling pace/bounce and timing etc.
