So I borrowed a bat to one of the younger lads at my new club this season, and after our season (South Africa) ended the past season he returned the bat to me. Bearing in mind this was a new bat when he got it, I was disappointed to say the least at its condition upon return. Toe cracked, massive stratch on the back and the following damage to the handle:

Question is, can this be fixed easily or is a rehandle the only option?
-
A nail?
In all seriousness, that's a rehandle job, I would say.
-
If it was a SF a nail might have been the solution ;)
I also think re-handle is the only solution, but I thought there might be an alternative.
-
Rehandle I'm afraid if u want the bat to perform again
-
Agreed, definite rehandle job there.
-
The disappointing part is that I thought this kid was responsible and that I was helping him because he couldn't afford a bat at the time. The bat really doesn't look like its one season old. Oh well, we live and we learn.

Show me a lad who looks after his own gear and I will be surprised. Show me a lad who looks after other peoples' gear and I will give you a hen that lays golden eggs.

Prepare to be surprised! I look after my kit as if it were made of precious metal!
I not only look after, I also fix up other peoples gear!
1 hen please!

Show me a LAD. This means someone under 18. The hen remains in my possession.

Can we make it under 21? ;)

The 37 doesn't relate to your age? I saw the video of you in the nets. You seemed an 'experienced' cricketer.

Requires a rehandle I am afraid.

37 is neither my age or the year I was born!
And if by 'experienced' you mean fat then guilty as charged! :D

No, by 'experienced' I meant older than 21 and a little less lithe than you would like to be. :It's good that you repair other peoples' bats. DO they mostly belong to young lads who never oiled and knocked them in properly?
The ones I repair do.
-
Cheers mate, I'm the first to admit I'm a lot less lithe than I could be but I'm working on that! ;)
And as you suspect there's a lot of neglected bats, mostly by the lads who don't seem to know what oiling or knocking in is, but occasionally I get an old favourite given to me by one of the older guys with the instructions "get this back into one piece, I've had it [insert number higher than my IQ] years"
-
I did repair one of those short bladed mongooses with a cracked handle. I used gorilla glue in the crack. then I coated extra handle binding in the same glue and extended the binding about an inch below the crack. It worked and is still going. To be fair to the lad a cracked toe happens as does a broken handle.
Better to re-handle it though

Haha, can this please win an award as most diplomatic post of the year?

I pva glued, re-bound, fibre taped and then applied an epoxy putty to cover a 2 inch area around that part of the handle to prevent any flex. Shaped it to suit the bottom hand. Its a season old and still holding. Hes a tailender and hardly nets, but he belted some boundaries with it. Ive told him to get it rehandled but hes a tightarse.
