Since joining the forum I have seen a lot of lovely looking sticks and it strikes me that opinion seems to be divided on whether heartwood is appealing, some like none, some like a little, but when does a little become too much?
Would a blade made entirely of heartwood be a bad thing and if so why?
-
I have seen so many pro's with lots of heartwood in bats during this World Cup. Ross Taylor's GM bat was almost 50% heartwood.
-
I have two bats which are three quarters heartwood in itself is no bad thing heartwood is normally lighter than sapwood however due to the moisture content they are not expected to last as long.
-
Heartwood is much harder than sapwood as it does not contain any sap and this is what makes it brittle also it is taken from the centre of the willow tree where the wood is older and therefore naturally harder.
Correctly pressed to improve toughness and correctly prepared prior to use heartwood should absorb stress the same as a bat made from sapwood.
-
I've never been a fan of heartwood to be honest.
Not sure why, think I prefer the look of a "one tone" bat rather than "two tone"!
I bat made entirely of heartwood though would be interesting.

We are without doubt a funny bunch. I personally love a cricket bat with a heartwood strip in it, I think they look great. Just shows each to their own!

Also contains less moisture.
My two three quarters heartwood bats play very well as @RF will agree

I had a knock with Dave's bat last night in the nets, it is fantastic.
Large middle, lots of coverage and great response.
It's got a good pick up and is very light, performs like a lot heavier bat.
All of his bats are pretty good though
