Title: Heel shave sharpening
Post by: KIPPERS on March 30, 2015, 12:17:29 PM
Hello peeps. I have picked up a very nice old heel shave in mint condition (10 squid on the Bay). Its so mint in fact that no one has put a proper edge on it. Could anyone give me some advice on sharpening it?

Use a bit of dowel and wrap some 320/400 grit wet and dry around it.  Rub the inside bevel around the curve.  The outer curve, just use flat to begin with.  Once you've suffciently sharpened the heel of the tool, use a block of wood, about 6" long and wider than the heel.  Cut the block with your heelshave until it rests smoothly in the grove.  Then you can tack the wet and dry down to get a repeatable grind on the heel
