Title: What is this and what causes it?

So I've got this bat and it's got a strip of darker wood - I assume it's a form of heartwood, but can anyone shed some light on this? As this bat is extremely light for the size.

My old GM had a couple of them, I think it's something to do with a butterfly stain somewhere on the tree from memory.

According to the GN Workshop

'often called a dry mark. A very dry year can produce a darker line like that.'

Which doesn't effect performance...
