Title: ***HELP NEEDED*** what's going on?!??
Post by: 19reading87 on April 22, 2015, 07:54:21 AM
Gents....

I've noticed that my top hand/wrist gets in awful positions when playing some shots! I've spoken to different people about it and tried my top hand in different positions on the bat but no matter what it goes back to this ( see attached images!!! )

What do you recommend?

First impression is that your left elbow is low and at an angle, so your wrist ends up in that contorted position. Perhaps try to practice with a higher elbow, and think of your forearm as an extension of the bat handle. Should help you play straighter.

Took one look at your photos and recommend  you try this :                                                                                                   Place your  bat face down on a table with the handle over hanging grip the bat first with your top hand and form a V by pointing your thumb and forefinger down between outside edge and the centre of the back of the bat.                                                                                  Check that both your hands are fairly close together on the handle towards the top of the handle.
When at the crease always ensure that the back of your top hand is   facing towards EXTRA COVER With your top hand elbow high.

I'm no expert but your back foot is flat too which will turn you and could cause your top hand to end up like that.

Just to throw my two penneth in (I'm far too young to use that expression aren't I?). I might be way off here but I think your hands and your head are very close together and your front leg also seems almost straight and braced meaning your elbow has to collapse to your left to keep your bat straight. Maybe you could try a more bent front knee which would allow a 'taller' body position and space between your head and hands for your elbow to remain straight.

The important thing I suppose, is if it is actually a problem for you other than looking unorthodox?

Tried to find a picture of what I mean and this is the best I could find:

Need to see a video really. The top hand/elbow looks a little odd, but I need to see more. My gut feel is that you need to work on the diamond of your left and right elbows.

The advice above seems sensible.

I think you need a new bat personally! ;)

I agree with some of what has been said above. Your front leg is too straight it looks locked. With regards to your top wrist, you could try having someone underarm you some balls and practice straight driving them with only your top hand. A ball in a sock or on a string can help with this as well. Concentrate on getting you elbow higher and getting a bend in your front leg.
You can also do a drill with a ball on the ground about a foot or so in front of your stance. Step to the ball and drive it straight. If your front leg remains straight you will not be in a position to hit the ball and will miss. If you bend your front knee you can reach the ball.
Good luck. It takes a lot of time to change a technique.

Your left shoulder and elbow is pointing towards mid on while you are playing towards extra cover.  Batting while driving is a side on game ..in both pics you are open chested. Your wrists are merely compensating the position of your front shoulder. Try pointing the front shoulder in rhe direction where you want to drive rest should follow.

Reds - firstly you are obviously a bit limp-wristed.

Secondly, you need to pm Buzz - I believe you are tucking your hands and arms up too close to your chest which is a problem I had and he cured. Talk to him about 'rocking the baby' or your 'diamond shape'.

@Buzz - will you help me rock the baby? Or help me find a new bat? ;)

i bet your little finger on your top hand isnt gripping the bat handle?

looks like you are playing with your hands rather than with your arms, ie you are dabbing the bat at the ball. This can happen when you loosen your top hand grip so it is effectively just the first couple of fingers gripping the bat, similar to the bottom hand.

Try and keep all the fingers on the top hand gripping the bat handle.

probably this - what I especially like about this is it is a really simple solution

this video bears no resemblance to the pics above... you need to put the confidence from your net play to the way you play in the middle.

Will you help me rock the baby?
humm this could be interpreted in the wrong way!!

In simple terms imagine you are cradling a baby in you arms and that is the shape you and the "rock" from your shoulders that you should play through your shots. In the video above you have no problem with it.

I wouldn't have thought of a firmer top hand grip, but I've never not had that, I always squeeze the hell out of the handle with my top hand, but that could well be it, I think.

I have still had this problem, however. And for me it was not bending my front knee and getting my head into the ball, and also not giving my arms their full extension i.e. what was said about "playing with your hands instead of your arms", really try and push your arms all the way out through the line whilst getting your head well over your front knee
