Title: Firewood - the revival
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on April 22, 2015, 08:11:10 PM
Well I've reached a decision on the eBay repair/firewood stash I received.

The seller is adamant they don't want returns so be it. I'll keep the bats and make a claim through eBay, meaning I get to keep the 4 bats and hopefully get my money back!

Disclaimer - that is the last I will say on the eBay issue publicly until something actually happens, if I get my money back or not is now irrelevant, I've written off the money as a bet I lost and moved on, life is too short to stress over these things!

"If life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
And if an eBay seller cons you with used bats, make the most of the situation and practice your refurb skills!

Anyway, this will be an ongoing thread but here's the one that was in the least worse condition of the bunch.

Under the tape was a bit of delamination but it wasn't as bad as it could've been.

I decided I like the aged look and I'm keeping the stickers (having wanted a Warsop for years!), so here's how she currently looks.
All the major damage is repaired, and I've sanded it so I have a level surface. The sanded area has been oiled and the bat still taps up nicely! How long it will last however I honestly couldn't say.

It has been a very sympathetic refurb, but in aiming to get to a stage where I can apply a fibreglass scuff and away I go!

Looks good, always wanted to try out a Warsop. :) How does she tap up?

I've always wanted to try a Warsop too, so this could be a diamond in the rough from the eBay purchase.

She tapped up a new ball very nicely, but the sound was unreal!
The delamination was a very small area and I'm certain after tapping the bat up it's 100% fixed.

With all the surface cracks near the middle I'm tempted to leave it natural and go for the Sachin look!  ;)

Do you mind saying how much you paid for them all? I've no experience in refurbing bats at all but I'd like to learn and this'd be a good way to do it, might even get something decent out of it at the end if it goes well.

Does anywhere ever give away totally ruined bats people could practice on?

I have a few, not sure they are repairable, but if you wanted to practice glueing, clamping, sanding techniques etc they are perfect.

You should have a go at steaming the decals off and re applying them. Then you could give the bats a full reconditioning. If it doesn't work it's no big deal anyway

Maybe not on the warsop but on one of the write offs

Now then, here is the first revival of the collection, here is the now ready for battle Warsop.

I tried to keep the "weathered" look, so I've repaired the delanination, cleaned the face of the bat so it was level and applied a fibreglass scuff sheet. I've also wrapped the toe in tape to hide the worst of the damage to the back sticker.

Next on my repair list was the Piri Piri.

This wasn't too bad apart from the stickers being lifted to reveal a hairline crack by the shoulder. As it wasn't the whole way though I thought "what's the worse that can happen) so filled it with glue. Once set I was confident the repair would hold so I proceeded.

Apart from the off dink out the back and a few cherries the Piri Piri was in fairly good condition (and would've been a nice bat before it was neglected)

With the shoulder repaired to a standard I'm happy with I got round to cleaning her up.

The bottom half of the bat is now cleaned up, I'm just waiting for a couple of days before I unveil the end result.
I'm very pleased with how this bat repaired and cleaned up all things considered.

If it lasts 1 ball I won't be disappointed because of the state it arrived in, but it could be a belter.

I've always wanted a Warsop so my heart is saying keep it.

However my head is saying I can get that and the Piri Piri back on eBay.
If I clearly say "repaired - no guarantee" in the listing I'm fairly confident the two posted sticks will get me near to breaking even on the initial price.

A bloke I know who is quite a well known YouTube cricket coach was given a PeriPeri to use in his videos. It was the biggest bat I have ever seen and it was 2'8. Honestly it was huge. He didn't rate the ping though to be fair.

I've been busy with these!

Here is the worse of the two Warsops. This was mashed into pieces on the toe and had a big strip of willow missing.

Here she was before I applied a generous glug of the fines raw linseed oil my garage had to offer!

The missing chunk has been replaced with wood glue! And all things considered I'm pleased with how she came out.
A fibreglass scuff sheet is a must on this bat to hide the face, but if it taps up okay I'll use this as a net/wet/lend it out bat.

And last (and arguably least!) the GN fusion carbo.
The shoulder was broken badly on this one, and on removing the stickers it was already full of dowels.

As it was dead anyway I had a bit of fun and gave it a really thorough sanding before "repairing" it.

It has been oiled and bar apying some fake eBay stickers and a scuff sheet this one is finished.

As it was already more dowel than bat and terminally broken, I used a "special dowel" as well as a lot of glue.
If you look closely at the last two pictures you might spot it  ;)
