Title: Saturday in the North
Post by: RF on May 06, 2015, 09:58:03 AM
Hi,

Can anyone get me a game on Saturday please?

I'm in Scunthorpe so somewhere reasonably close would be good.

Our first team don't have a game and I'm not allowed to play for the 2nds because of a stupid league rule.

Russ

PS I'm a very ordinary batsman

Just out of interest, what league rule is that?

In the Hampshire league I don't think the dropping down rule kick in until you've played 8 games in a higher side

I'm not sure if this should be on a new thread but if it generates any interest I am sure the Admins will tell me!

I would like to know what peoples views are on dropping down a team if the "senior" team isn't playing. There are probably two schools of thought:
1 - Its better for the club to put out the strongest possible team.
2 - The guys that normally play in the team should continue to do so and shouldn't be dropped just because a first team player is available.

What are your thoughts.

Cheers

Our club will continue to play those who would normally play in that team, maybe the addition of one boarder line player if they need game time. However, tbh personally I don't like artificial strengthening but don't count this as that. Mainly because the leagues shouldn't be stupid enough to have blank weeks in the season!!

....but putting that discussion on another thread would probably help this thread find Russ a game as intended! :)

The rule is very grey, if a "first team" player plays in the seconds and does well the opposition can put in an appeal to the league which if upheld can result in the other team being dropped points.  It was introduced a few years back to stop clubs that have 2 or 3 teams strengthening them at the end of the season to ensure 2nd or 3rd team dont get relegated.  I don't agree with artifically strengthening your team just because you can and I wouldn't want someone to step down so that I can play but this won't happen at my club anyway.

That isn't the case here, first team play in Div 1 and 2nd team in Div 2 so there is not much of a gap in standard and I wouldn't make a massive difference, it's just stopping me playing.  Frustratingly my first team game has been moved to Sunday to accomdate the oppositon as they have 4 Saturday teams, made even worse by the fact that I'm going on holiday on Sunday (I always make my wife book Monday to Wednesday so I only miss one weekend of cricket).

Fair point  - I would stress that I was not intending to hinder Russ's efforts to find a game and wish him the best of luck for Saturday!

we tend to select teams and then if one game is cancelled the players in that team miss out or backfill gaps.

has been difficult a couple of times - gaps tend to occur in our fours so they sometimes field one or two players from a higher standard...

I find myself in the same position as Russ, although its because my club seems to have forgotten about me.

I could get you a game in the Darlington area pal

We would pick seconds as normal. But if any gaps need filling, rather than weakening the thirds, the available first then fill in.
We often fight for a game too..... Everyone wants to play. Last time I got a game it was a wet weekend, we bowled oppo out for 74(all second team bowlers) and had about 40mins of light to knock them off.
I opened, and scored 68 of our 75 and we knocked them of in 7 overs.... Whoops.

Anyway back to original topic, I have asked for you Russ, but all 3 sat sides have been filled already.  Sorry

The problem i've got is that I don't have a car so I have to rely on the closest players to me to get down to the club (otherwise its a 20 mile journey around the houses by bus and tram), both of them almost never go to nets so i'm just sat around bored until the club gets desperate on a match day. Its hard to fight for a regular place in the team and even harder to get above the fine leg to fine leg spot if you can't get to nets and practice.

@Ams4287 thanks Andy

@Cin88 talk to someone else at the club and explain your problems, you're obviously keen to play, that'd get you a game at our club regardless of how good you are mate

@Cin88 where exactly are you??

Kearsley. Puts me in a bit of a tight spot because i'm bang in the middle of everything yet too far away at the same time (if that even makes sense).

I'm going to give the club secretary a shout, see if I can get something sorted out.

@RF

Hey Russ as of now we've got a full compliment across all 4 Saturday sides, if things change I'll let you know (you'd need to be registered with the league).

Dont think that would go down very well with MC Ryan!!

Transferring in and then out or giving an alias.... Couple of decent knocks I see mate....

Cheers mate, having a half decent season to date. Had two bad descicions alread though, first game edged onto pad and given LBW for 6, my fault should have played straighter. Third week got given caught behind for 4, even though no one really went up for the appeal. I was miles away, just cliped my pad. The other two games had some decent scores so happy overall.

How have you boys been getting on? Haven't been on play cricket so not up to date with scores and league standings.

Well my luck just changed, been given a first team reserve call up for this sunday. This will be funny, playing on the back of having not trained since season started, not match fit and got a dodgy knee (some weird combination of trapped nerve and cramps).

@Ryan I was supposed to be playing for Glasshoughton but they couldn't get the paperwork done in time so I didn't end up playing.
A bit disappointed really

Been hard work pal, Likes of me playing Div 1! Its always gonna be hard!

Big Tim gone back to New Zealand, massive loss for us and players with growing families. Somewhat of a rebuilding stage and trying to field 22......

Had a chance against you I was still hiding in 2s at this stage, make up man dropped Jase on about 10 I am informed.

Some nice bats your pushing out the door!

Oh yeah, forgot you know some of the lads there. I don't think you missed much, it's been a cold start to the season.

Has Tim gone  back for good? We've also lost a few players due to families, fallen out with the game etc. Its always hard keeping players, especially when you've got a club house like ours.

Missed the game that week, spent all weekend making bats. Getting there though, I can see the end of the pile now.
