So - ignoring KP-gate fora while. Apparently the England squad for the first test against the Kiwis is being announced tomorrow. I don;t know how many players they have to announce - but I guess 13. who do we think will be in the squad?
Here's my pick:
Cook*
Lyth
Ballance
Bell
Root
Stokes
Ali
Buttler
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Plunkett
Woakes / Brooks (dependant on fitness)
-
No way will Cook drop his boy Jordan or pick Rashid. Suspect that if you were substitute a blank space for Rashid and Jordan for Woakes (who is injured) then you'd probably be pretty close. Though there are rumours that Cook was on the phone begging Trott to reconsider his retirement yesterday...
-
Surely Wood is ahead of Brooks...?
-

Bell
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Jordan
Broad
Anderson
Plunkett
I'd say they'll only pick 12. Add another spinner maybe to that if they want. I'd hope it was Rashid, but I doubt it.
-
Woakes won't be playing any cricket till about July, end of June earliest
-
I think they'd pick Tredwell as an extra spinner over Rashid.
Thoughts on Hales, he's been the in form player in the championship and wonder if he'll be in with a shout of leap-frogging Lyth? Think Lyth deserves a shout first though
-
it is may, there is no need for more spinners than Ali.
My team (Yes I have dropped the self serving somethings that are Cook, Bell, Broad and Anderson)
Lyth
Hales
Ballance
KP
Root
Ali
Buttler
Stokes
Plunkett
Wood
Brooks
Team that has already been picked
Cook
Lyth
Ballance
Bell
Root
Ali
Stokes
Buttler
Jordan
Broad
Anderson

The penny is dropping (albeit slowly) that they need to try new players. Let's give Farbrace the benefit of the doubt that he may have some different ideas to Moores - he's had good reports from everywhere he's been, including from Sangakkara, who's been very vocal about KP's exclusion. Just a hunch they'll go with Wood, so Jordan will be twelth man. I think they may have picked Rashid, but they probably feel Ali provides more with the bat (not necessarily my opinion, I understand Rashid is a decent batsman). I wouldn't be surprised if Rashid is selected, though the captain and coach have always preferred economy over strike rate...
I think there's a good argument for bringing in Hales. He's bang in form and would provide some comfort for the KP fan club. However, the selectors (who have escaped blame for the KP fiasco) would be slaughtered in the press and media for their lack of logic re; Lyth going to the Windies and they are desperately clinging to their jobs, not that Lyth deserves to be leapfrogged.
Cook and Moores have themselves to blame for Lyth not having any cricket up to now, but I do agree with Michael Vaughan that there was logic in going with Trott; you know what you're getting and everything pointed to him being in form. The gamble (as it proved to be) didn't work, so now they have to blood a debutant and hope he copes in the four possible innings he has prior to the Ashes. In that regard I wouldn't mind seeing Lyth or Hales open. Given the selectors conservative nature I see Lyth playing and that's not a bad thing.
-
You make a valid point - Farbrace is a very good coach and from what I have seen on twitter, there are rumours that he was uncomfortable with Peter Moores' approach in a number of areas (I don't know what they are!)
-
Lyth looked ok in his first game back this week. Got a decent 50 on a tricky deck first up then a quick 20-odd when trying to get on with it.
Hales struggled in the last match but has had some great knocks in the previous games.
It would be harsh on Lyth to lose the next chance because they took him to understudy Trott. Hales has done what needs to be done though.
It should come down to the fact that Hales bats 3 for Notts. So would it be a similar unfairness akin to Trott opening when you have a deserving opener to come in.
Perhaps the 'new generation line-up could be...
Cook
Lyth
Hales
Ballance
Root
Ali
Buttler
Stokes
Jordan
Wood
Anderson
Keep a bit of experience in Cook/Andwrson to blood the new ones with a plan to replace them within the next 12-18 months?

You can't leave us dangling, what tweets, where?

Lyth
Hales
Balance
KP
Root
Bell
Buttler
Stokes
Wood
Plunkett
Anderson
Won't be spinners wickets and root has shown he can and does as much or more than a part time Ali..cook gone cause he's simply not done enough Over the last year or two. KP in to add firepower and hales/Lyth in as they are potentially the openers for he next 5-8 years. Balance has done enough, root too. Bell hasn't but is just shifted down to six. Buttler up to 7 to add firepower (a learn from KP) with the rest as bowlers
This team would have the benefit of showing the ECB is open to change, would re engage with all its currently lost fans and get the maximum fans behind the team going into a hard summer and winter. No brainier really
-
Farbs has a link through my old school and the mutterings amongst that lot were the 'Schoolmaster' approach and rather regimented, unimaginative drills.
This is of course totally unsubstantiated - however, it would line up with England's generally unimaginative approach, and inflexible style.
-
Ok, I listed what I thought they would pick, and now here is my somewhat leftfield selection as incoming coach -
Cook
Lyth
Hales
Balance
Bell
Root*
Stokes
Buttler+
Plunkett
Wood
Anderson
12th man - Ali
13th man - Kerrigan
-
I don't see them making any radical changes from the team that played the last test. I imagine they'll pick Lyth as opener and perhaps replace Jordan with someone more threatening. Plunkett maybe? I'd like to see them trying out someone as an alternative to Stuart Broad, but don't see that happening.
-
Reallly good show on five live the other night. Vaughan said that there's no way England have the quality of bowlers to only go in with 4 - we don't have enough players in form, an out and out paceman (deemed good enough) nor Graeme Swann; a match winner anywhere. It was in reference to him saying that he'd tell KP there's no place at present but an injury/loss of form would parachute him straight in...
It'll be four bowlers plus Ali/Rashid. England traditionally always appear to blood new quicks early season to give them the most favourable conditions. That's why I think (hope) Wood gets a game. I'd love to see Hales given a go, but there's no room so I reckon he gets a full season of T20 and ODIs then if he's impressing he may get a tour to SA in the winter.
-
Hales heading over to the ipl to play for Mumbai Indians
Looks like he's not in the test squad
-
Cook, Lyth, Ballance, Bell, Root, Ali, Stokes, Buttler, Jordan, Broad, Anderson, Wood
Lyth will be cap 666!
-
Lets hope he live upto it and Beasts some runs.
-
What's Plunko done wrong?
-
disciplined by Yorkshire and relegated to the seconds, missed a photo call or sommat
delighted wood and lyth are in
some new faces that need sticking with long term
-
England seem to have this inability to play 4 front-line bowlers which irritates the hell out of me, show's complete lack of faith in the top order to score runs!! >:(
-

I swear I read that who ever got that cap could bypass and go to the next? I might be wrong but I am pretty sure

He's under the impression that he's getting cap number 666?
-
I think during commentary, some time in the india series i think they said it could be skipped at the players request, but I may be making this up but I am 99% sure I heard it. Maybe its changed.

Have you seen our Top Order bat recently?
-
Have you seen our Top Order bat recently?
Yeah I have, they've all gotten some runs during the time in West Indies, time to put a little faith in them and hope they can do the same to NZ. How long do you leave it before you're happy they will not fail?

when any of the top six avg 45+ over teh course of the nz and aus series.. What they score vs a crap WI, a not caring India to bump up avgs is almost irrelevant
-
Although they did get out for 128 in their last knock.
-

So your logic is if they score runs against lesser said attacks it's irrelevant but if they fail then they should be dropped???
My theory is take the runs on offer and score them.

Playing devil's advocate here.
By your logic of "runs against a crap west indies attack don't count" then KP's 355* doesn't count as the Leics attack is even worse.

if you go back through you'll find i said they were poo too. at least he went big though, unlike cook.
-
Cook's still worth his place in the side as a batsman.
More tons than any other Englishman in tests. Decent pair of hands in the slips. He isn't however worth his place as a captain.
Anyway, this is all moot. KP's got an injury now, that's him out for the next 2 weeks...
-
boult and southee are gonna have a field day

There are no better options ...
At the moment.

Broad preparing for the NZ series:

Different set of rules for broad and the rest of the team
-
Naughty from Broad. Let's hope he is reprimanded and has to miss the NZ series
-

no let him play.. bowl and get carted and bounced out yet again
-
Oh i dunno,Broad just gone up in my estimation a bit
'Client is suffering a migraine' is a bit lame thou
If he''s been out with Flintoff he's lucky he''s still in the universe
I wonder what they were talking about all night?
-
Maybe Flintoff was drinking him under the table as revenge for KP? I reckon it was only a quiet night for big Fred! Imagine getting stuck with Sir Beefy and Flintoff at your table on one of these do's...
-
Thats absolute bull poo, but dont worry, as an ECB favourite it will get swept under the carpet
-

Absolutely true !! ECB is never going to go after their preferred players :D
-
There does seem to be a....lets say set of double standards at play here. Set aside the KP situation etc and just look at the recent treatement of, say, Matt Coles and Ben Stokes when they enjoyed a few too many on a Lions tour (sent home). It seems to be one rule for the masses and another for Cook, Anderson, Broad and Prior...
-
So when is the investigation results due from the WI tour? Who is leading it? So far they've just allowed Trott to retire but it's the same team...... Hardly inspiring trust in graves words
-
Broad has apologised, but if he was ill he has nothing to apologise for
Don't think there is any doubt amounst fans we don't have an organisation running the game that inspires any confidence.
I suspect Strauss and Harrison will be charged with sorting out the mess and Graves will take a back seat.
He should certainly be kept away from any reporters or microphones

By 'ill' you mean drunk right?? Stokes/Coles were sent home from a tour for such behaviour
-
nz look a shambles btw, if England do go on to lose it'll be against a half baked side whose best players have come Straight from slap and tickle...
-
exactly, if he was ill he has nothing to apologise for, if he was hammered then he has. I do agree there is a double standard in the England side, there's clearly a group favoured and they have a strong influence.
Without digging up the past again on these boards if you look at the KP genius twitter account that's something that should of been stopped-if you are putting emphasis on 'team ethics' that should of been stamped out
I think Broad is just about the most unpopular England player currently, Anderson is more in the background but surely has an influence on what goes on.
Quite how England tackle these problems, if at all, is the challenge for a new coach.
for 'good mates that get on well' you could read 'clique'. most teams have them, dunno about your club side but my club side has.
-
If he was ill and supposed to be resting, what on earth was he doing out late drinking?
-

err, the coach has gone too???
That is quite a big step and there'll be little change on personnel until the new one is in place.
