if i get a slix or puma it will be from my local not online.
the place that has the salix also has a GN Ignite so if its a 5 star it might perform better than a PP

Solitaire bat or not James ?
Title: Re: One Question .
Post by: petehosk on December 06, 2009, 01:07:14 AM
I admit I am addicted!

LB - just go and see the Salix and try it with a ball or mallet! They should have a mallet in the shop!
I think that Salix make excellent bats mate. And the chances of you getting a rubbish one are almost non-existent!

Or I am sure that Gary from Redback could sort you out a decent bat - I have NEVER heard of a bad Redback bat.
The one he made me feels like it is gonna go like a rocket!

You can get some very good copys of kahuna stickers from ebay.
Blank newbery from talisman if you can catch him.

Please pick one soon, your driving me nuts !

Yeh....come on Luke.
I know you wanna make a good decision, but you have to remember that three or four decisions could be a good decision for you.
What I mean is that you seem to think that there is ONLY ONE correct choice of which bat to get. Where, in reality, a Salix, Puma, Redback Solitaire and Newbery may all be great bats for you!

Ok - then look at Wisden and 'All out cricket' websites, as they test all the bats and stuff and review them:

Copy and paste the following links and read the reviews mate:

http://wisdencricketer.com/equipmentList.php?parent_id=7&child_id=1&mode=type (http://wisdencricketer.com/equipmentList.php?parent_id=7&child_id=1&mode=type)

http://www.alloutcricket.com/gear-test-2009-credit-crunch-bats-2/ (http://www.alloutcricket.com/gear-test-2009-credit-crunch-bats-2/)

Have fun!
And dont worry about the stickers TOO MUCH. The stickers can be replaced, whereas the bat can't!

The stickers are available from GCCC website in Australia.
The postage is not cheap, but they are genuine stickers mate:

If it were my £170 budget, then I tell you what the choice would be for me!

I would either choose the Salix after going to see and feel it.
OR I would phone Gary at Redback, tell him your full budget, and ask him what he could do for you?

E-Unit - I know what you mean. The Redback is awesome, and passing it up becuase you dont like the stickers seems mental to me too!

Anyway, we have given you loads of links for you to research with.
Plus we have made recommendations based mostly on personal experience.
So the only thing left to do, is for you to go away and check out the links I sent you, and make a decision.
We can give advice until we are blue in the face, but you need to get out there and decide mate.
Best of luck!

Ok mate - another option below:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Screaming-Cat-Perpetual-Cricket-Bat_W0QQitemZ160383918343QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_CricketBats_SM?hash=item2557a06107 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Screaming-Cat-Perpetual-Cricket-Bat_W0QQitemZ160383918343QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_CricketBats_SM?hash=item2557a06107)

In case you dont know who makes Screaming Cat bats - a guy called Julian Millichamp who is generally reguarded as the best (or one of the top 2 or 3) bat makers in the world makes these bats. And well within your budget too!!

If in doubt, then have a look at the website!

ok but which companys have the best batmakers ?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Title: Re: One Question .
Post by: petehosk on December 06, 2009, 09:35:12 AM
There is not one answer to that - opinions vary!

But I would rate

Millichamp (Screaming Cat)
Newbery (Newbery)
Bradbury (Bradbury)
Kember (Salix)
Kransbueler (Gray Nicolls)

When you consider that these batmakers have made bats for some of the top batsmen in the world, then you would be in good hands!

But there are other top podshavers out there too! Most companies would have a head-batmaker who would be really good!
With the likes of Screaming Cat, you woud have a bat made for you by the same person who made bats for Adam Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Imran Khan, Justin Langer, Brian Lara and dozens of other tops batsmen!
And I am sure that the likes of Roger (Solitaire) has made bats for top batsmen too, such as Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Graham Gooch, Alan Border and Graeme Hick.
And the others have done the same too!

And this is before we start looking at the likes of James Laver (Laver and Wood), Gary (Redback), as well as the multitude of incredibly high skilled Asian batmakers around, who have made bats for some of the Indian and Pakistan batsmen!

So just go and look at the Salix and if you like it, take the £170 out of your pocket and buy it.
If not, then speak to Gary at Redback, or Roger at Solitaire and see what they can offer - I am sure that they could both make you a bat you would love!
Or there is always the Screaming Cat on ebay!

Last bit of advice mate............................

As you seem to go for the look of the labels too, then if I could make a suggestion?
I think we have already said that if you got a Salix, Solitaire or Screaming Cat, you would have a great bat.
Also, there are serveral excellent batmakers on this forum too - Redback, Hell4Leather, etc!
So as you seem to be a label man, and we already know that all the above would be able to do you an awesome bat - then why not make a shortlist, then see which label you prefer and choose that way?

Ok guys i went and look at the salix today and wasnt impressed with it. £180 and no straight grains and just wasnt nice.
saw a gn ignite assasin for £80 and it was really nice and light but had a knot on back and front.
so i can now wait for 2010 and get gn or kook or get the puma or get a plain solitaire stickered as incurza or custom stickers.

Unsure
