Title: Split Thumb Webbing..... Again!
Post by: kenbriooo on May 31, 2015, 01:51:26 PM
I split my right hand thumb webbing a couple of seasons ago and repeated the same feat several weeks later after running out of tape and forgetting to buy some more on the way to the game.  Both times were to similar balls that bounced up just in front of me at slip.

However I did it again yesterday when fielding at mid off to a strong drive that I stopped well, but nothing I haven't don't a 1000 times before.  As soon as the ball was in my hand I knew it had gone again thanks to the familiar sting and the proceeding claret that I tried to ignore for the rest of the over which has certainly brightened up my whites.

Anyways it is obvious that this is now and probably will be forever more a weak spot that I'll need to protect from future injuries.  My questions to you guys is how is the best way to tape up and protect it without limiting the range of movement and is there anything else you would recommend to help it heal well and stay intact in the future?

Cheers

I get this all the time because of really bad eczema on my hands (of all the inconvenient places to have eczema). Right now its causing the joint of my right ring finger to split like mad every couple of weeks, there's not really much you can do to prevent it apart from keeping the effected area covered by tape or an inner + tape when you're batting. If it splits again then i'd recommend anti bacterial creme underneath the tape to keep moisture in and infection out, I also find it helps speed upthe healing process a bit.

Being between the thumb and index finger it's a really difficult place to strap up with restricting hand mobility. It's clearly something in going to to protect in the future as I can't keep putting up with the hassle of trips to the hospital and the inconvience of not being able to write at work which as a teacher is difficult.

All the braces / supports I've looked at seem to cover too much of the hand or wrist, might have to get all Heath Robinson!

Did this at the weekend between thumb & pointy.

Did people play the next week or wait until fully healed?

I keep wicket & bat, would strapping it up be ok 1 week later?

You'll just have to apply loads of fabric strapping and hope for the best there's no easy way to strap this part up if it was on your other fingers then that would be fine but this is an absolute nightmare to sort

Thanks, would you only use fabric strapping or would you put some padding on the split before strapping it up?

@MD2812 I would apply a cotton pad or something similar and then the tape in case it opens whilst your playing and it would just catch the blood
