I can't believe i'm having to ask this and I feel like a clown for doing so. Has anyone got any advice for playing the ball when its either pitched on/outside leg or is going in that direction from anywhere else?
For some reason I can't seem to get to the pitch of the ball or get my bat on the ball, and I keep lifting my front leg out of the way, its getting beyond annoying now. I've tried shifting my guard to middle and leg to try and be more in line with the ball and standing outside leg to try and turn the ball into something I can play as if it was on/outside off, but nothing has worked.

Clip it off your pads through square leg flick it down to find leg or sweep or sweep slog.
-
I can't seem to get the shot off, I used to have a fairly good leg glance but that's gone to pot for some reason. I don't know whether its a timing issue or i'm not picking the ball up properly or what right now. I'm rather annoyed with myself, to say the least. Its no wonder i've not had a game for going on 7 weeks now with performances like the one I put on tonight.

Not sure you should be taking advice from me about how to play off your legs but here's my 2 penneth.
1 - Keep your head as still as possible
2 - Move your front foot towards the line of the ball. It's hard to hit the ball if you're not in line with it.
3 - keep your head still

Our coach always tells me I'm strong off my pads, strangest thing is I never used to be able to play anything to save my life until a couple of years ago. Something just clicked.
If it's on that line I know I wont be LBW, so I play it on length as it's effectively a "free hit".
If its on my hips I just work it behind square, depending how quick/close to my body it is I will use the pace to send it either very fine (quicker bowler, just help it on it's way) right round to square (actually hit it rather than deflect it).
If it's full then a leg glance is a safe bet. Head in line, stand tall and watch it onto the face of the bat.
If it's a medium pace or a spinner then the sweep comes out to fuller balls, while anything slightly back of a length get the mow to moo treatment (my favourite shot).
The key to all of these (in answer to your first question) it to keep your head in line, be still at the point of impact and your front foot on the ground. Hope this helps :)

any video of your batting?

When I miss a leg glance or a clip off the hip it tends to be early on in an innings and I find myself falling over towards the offside. The stiller I am it comes off the middle more times than not.

Doesn't normally last long enough for that! The bowlers tend to bowl at the wooden things behind me rather than feed me notable balls :-[
Think there's a few of me in the nets floating round on here somewhere :)

i am shocking of my legs if somebody bowled at my pads all day id not get a run haha
i fall over and my balance is shocking

Here we go! Enjoy the fatty slogging everything with far too much bottom hand! :D
This was a 15 minute session batting in pairs. I have edited out the footage of the guy I was batting with, and taken out all but one of the wides near the end (by which time I'd lost the will to keep editing!)
Turns out I actually got to face just over 3 minutes of legal deliveries in the session!

Net session vs seamers from 27.02.2015
As with last week I have edited out the wides and ended up with not a lot of footage.
In this video I don't really get my timing going and get pinned near the start which lead to a fair bit of short bowling! :(
I also notice as soon as I watched it back my bat is coming down too wide again, old habits die hard I guess >:(

Another Friday night, another net!
This time I was batting on my own (none of this pairs swap every 4 balls crap) so I uploaded 6 minutes of raw footage.
Enjoy the wides!

I haven't watched the video's above - however my view on this is that balls that are going down the leg side can be difficult to hit - this is because it is hard to get your front foot outside the line of the ball. This is why when player hits the on drive it looks immense.
So for the full balls that you are looking to play through the on side - lead with your head to the line the ball and look to play the ball to mid on - it may end up going through mid wicket, but that doesn't matter.
If it is full you have the clip off your hip/pull option.
The challenge here is not to try to not hit the ball too hard.

Oh yes you have! You even gave me feedback :D ;)
Won't need too many off side fielders for your batting Cam!
-
dont plant your foot and play around your pad
small step, lean in, on drive it
or small step, lean in and caress it down to fine leg
-
Too many people move their front foot towards balls on leg stump I think - then if it's full you end up playing around your pad, so you're not gonna hit it! For me, leave your front foot where it is or move it out the way and just lean forward to get your head to the ball, then play straight as if you were aiming through mid-on. Half the time it'll come off the inside half of the bat anyway so will head off into the legside, or use your front elbow pointing through the ball to direct the shot while keeping the blade straight - aim for mid-on as normal but point your elbow to midwicket, ball goes through midwicket. See Kevin Pietersen videos on the flamingo shot, explains it very well.

Like I said, I keep moving my foot up into the air (essentially balancing on one leg) and when I don't i'm playing all around my pads. I need to have a throw down session I think, I can't trust the lads at the club to bowl on a leg side line for me for more than two or three balls.
Funny enough Cam I did the mow to moo last night, complete accident though as I was trying for a pull over square leg, sent the ball a good 70/80 yards and lost it in the lodge (club treasurer is now moaning about the expense of bowling machine balls). Not bad for a 2.7 grade 3 plank.

I'm not sure what I changed, but years ago, I was dreadful against balls aimed at my pads.
Now it's a free hit for me, and one of my strongest areas.
I remember a guy I used to work with who was a very good batter,(Nigel pickles, earby cc) trying to get me to slow it down and not try to hit it too hard
It must have sunk in somehow, to the point where I now bat on off stick and like I said, look at it as a safe area to score.
I think the main thing is to watch the ball onto the bat and don't look to hit it too hard

I used to be there, anything on leg/going down I could not hit for the life of me. I still am to an extent but I think there is a slight improvement what would I put it down to?? I think I used to play the ball too early in general. Waiting for it to arrive and being more watchful has helped me improve I think the angle of the bat coming down and the pace on the ball sometimes results in a nice leg side shot even if it wasn't exactly what you intended...
So if you're struggling remind yourself to watch the ball, get bat on ball and sometimes the rest happens naturally.
(PS I've been given out LBW in 3 of my last 4 innings so take any advice from me with a pinch of salt:)
