Title: Help! How do I bat in a match?
Post by: wayward_hayward on June 21, 2015, 07:27:31 AM
This may sound like a strange question but this is becoming a huge problem for me. A bit of background first.

I should be batting top 7, however most of my career has been spent between 7-11 due to my bowling and giving everyone else a game (I have no problems with that). Lots of people at my club say how I'm the best looking batsman to score no runs!

Put me in a net on an artifical wicket and I'm fine, I will hit ball after ball and I will feel like a batsman. However, put me into a game situation and everything goes tits up. I feel like I'm nailed on 0 and can't get off it. I never feel comfortable or settled at the crease. Even stuff like batting spikes and playing on grass wickets makes me feel uneasy. It feels so unnatural to me because I'm comfortable and used to batting on a bit of plastic in my trainers.

So people of this wonderful forum, what can I do to rediscover some confidence and not waste what little talent I have?

sounds like you need some time in the middle with no pressure - you need a charity game (good excuse to mix up the batting order and/or chuck the ball to sb else), a friendly, or practice match/ net in the middle

I always bat in trainers and only wear spikes in the field. wear trainers if you feel more comfortable. Don't concern yourself with scoring. It will happen on its own. Put less pressure on yourself and enjoy it.

Grab yourself a Sunday friendly mate, ask to open the innings and just bat 40 overs. Even if you get 40 no it will help you adjust

Top advice that. - and if you do get the chance to open take strike.

The nought thing - key is not to panic. I was stuck on 0 for five overs the other Sunday, but my partner was scoring freely. As soon as I got off the mark I hit a couple of boundaries and it all started flowing. Just be patient.

Bet in trainers you have to be comfortable at the crease don't worry about scoring has that alone can get you out just hang in there the longer you stay at the crease the runs will come.

I used to be like you until late last season when I realised there's no point worrying. Just go out, get bat on ball and play positively, if its not there to be hit then block it or leave it, you'll soon get off the mark. Like some of the others have said, you'll have days where it'll be 5+ overs before you get going properly, as long as you're holding one end down it doesn't matter how quickly you're scoring.

They key is not to think about runs, just go bat and have fun. The moment you start thinking about runs is the moment you lose concentration and thats not good ;)

I used to be the world's nerviest player on 0. This season I've just tried to adopt the don't worry about it approach to duck making. If it's going to happen it's going to happen, don't worry too much about it, I seem to have been much more successful since then.

Thanks for the advice guys, I have managed to score some runs against some pretty poor attacks in LMS and on Sunday's so I am getting some time in the middle. Batting in trainers has also helped although it can be a bit slippy!
